It didn't take me long to paint my Hellion, what took the most time was convincing myself that it would be fun to do, & that I didn't care if it came out less than cool... 3 months later I bought a can of dark blue spray paint, & sprayed 3 diagonal lines across each side of my Springfield Hellion.
I made sure to go into it with the attitude of "I don't give a damn how it comes out," & I love the results

The forest green coat reminds me of Army men toys when I was a kid. That pattern looks great! Nice job

    Warning: longer one.
I love painting guns/gear. I'm not artistic at ALL but it gets the creative juices flowing.
My absolute FAVORITE method, by an order of magnitude, has been sponge-o-flage. Do a real crude splotchy base coat the traditonal way. Fast and dirty. Let dry.
I use stainless cat food bowls as a paint tray. They are cheap at WM and last forever. Spray a generous squirt of spraypaint in the bowl, add a drop or two of solvent to give you extra working time (optional but really helps. I like toluene or xylene), and grab a chunk off a sea sponge. You add paint by doing a dab in the paint, then dabbing it on the gun until it quits applying. First you'll want to work on dabbing paint to fade/blend your base coat colors. Maybe make some harsher transitons too. Let that dry a bit then do some high/low contrast colors (black/dk. gray, sand/cream, bright green, whatever) sparsely on top.
When you are done you have a paint job that comes out with the "best" features of multicam, marpat, and flecktarn. If you look at your favorite patterns before doing this you see some of the "tricks" that patterns like multicam or atacals to get those looks. Multicam for example is "big splotches that are faded gently on one side, and crisp transitions on the other, with some accent colors" where flecktarn is "pretty even distributed colors" and digital is "splotches with fuzzy pixel edges" So with a little thinking, and not that much time, you can have a rifle that may not look like multicam, but will blend in right with it. Sponge style M81 I think looks BETTER than M81. Worlds your oyster.
As the seasons change you can break out a extra color or two and shift with the seasons.. i.e. adding bark grays and browns in fall, greens in spring or summer. If you have REAL winters you can take off-white and do some spray on splotches, then sponge some white sparsely over the remaining colors Then take your predominant winter non-white color (rock, tree bark, evergreen leaf, whatever) and apply some.
It becomes an all-season sysyem and all you need are low grade sea sponges (cheaper the better they have more defects,) paint, and a couple cat food bowl. Clean the bowl and sponges with gas or carb cleaner and let them dry. I imagine a person could use wadded up mesh/cloth/textiles to do some work too. Probably going to try some of that in the future.
Long one, but one I wanted to share. Been doing this for years now. The hardest part is the 5 mins it takes to mask off and the results really put a smile on my face.

If I am doing a build I will typically paint the receivers and the hand guard before assembly. I tend to do solid colors, I have not done a cammo pattern yet. scuff everything up with a red scotchbrite pad and a little soak in acetone to remove dust and any oils on the parts. Paint to the color I want and call it a day.

Doesn't the paint just bake off of the barrel after heating it up? I think most people don't bother with the barrel and just paint the handgaurd on the rifle.
I want to paint mine but I haven't yet.
    Thanks

No havent had an issue with it yet. Granted im not full auto mag dumping 30rd mags through it. But it holds up very well co sidering the paint used. Thanks for watching!!

How does it look after cleaning it?

I dont use a solvent on the painted surfaces. Clp or whatever you use would take the paint off. But with it painted you dont have to worry about any rust or corrosion. I clean the bolt and chamber as normal though. Thanks for watching..
