Not that you needed it, but did you know that there's an energy tank at the very beginning of Cossack 1? Just walk all the way to the left in the snow.
This was a bit of a turning point for the series. MM4 introduced another couple of staples, Mega Man's ability to charge up his Mega Buster for an even stronger shot, and Eddie, another buddy for him and a transportation robot that carries and provides a random item for the player in several stages. Another favorite original entry of mine!
It also gave us some interesting Robot Masters with Dr. Cossack's designs thanks to Dr. Wily manipulating him by kidnapping Kalinka, even if 6 of the Robot Masters weren't made for combat purposes.
For sure, it was like the “second life” of the series in the latter days of the NES. Almost all of us had moved on to the SNES by then. I personally never knew anyone who owned Mega Man 4, 5 or 6 during that era. I only played them much later on. I really enjoy the intro as well.
You just know back in 1991 many kids' parents said "If I buy you this Megaman game, you're not getting a Super Nintendo for your birthday this year." and some of said kids would have been foolish to go with the Super Nintendo
Expecting a 4th entry to be "fresh," as well as lamenting that a 4th entry no longer is "fresh," is about as insightful as expecting stale bread to be "not soft." Dry, stale bread actually has uses, but holding it to the same expectation as non-stale bread is absurd
I may be alone in this, but the label art and box art of Mega Man 4 is one of my favourites on the NES. I found this game CIB at a pawn shop around 10 years ago. I think it’s a different and great game.
This was the only MM game I actually owned - got it for my birthday after me and my brother rented 3 so many times. I remember we got stuck on Dive Man for the longest time. This is probably my 3rd favorite in the series after 3 and 2, but still a great game I have many fond memories of.
The only 2 memories that I have for this game is that this is the 1st time that Wily has develop his Skull Machine & Capsule & The Dr Wily DEATH GLITCH! Still remember that the Rain weapon killed his escape Pod. That was funny back in the day.
Have you tried Mega Man The Sequel Wars: Episode Red yet? It’s an AMAZING SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive remake of Mega Man 4 with tons of options with both a modern and classic style, and it hides a lot of funny stuff that directly references glitches you can do in the original game.
This one is what introduced me to MegaMan, although I was about 5 -- heck, I couldn't figure out how to slide at Dive Man's stage. Years later, fighting against Dr Wily machine was SO tough because the hit box was too high up. I found out that I can charge up, pause to switch to Rush coil and then pause again to switch back to mega buster, the buster remained fully charged. That had helped defeat that tough boss fight and eventually beat the game. After playing this many times, I was so happy to actually see the ending.
Mega Man 4 is my favorite game out of the entire 6 NES Mega Man games. The new antagonist Dr. Cossack gave the game a Russian theme, the Robot Masters designs are sick (Especially Pharaoh Man, Skull Man and Drill Man), all the weapons are amazing. We have not one but TWO castles which most of the stages are well designed and creative too. (Met themed stage in Wily 1) and the soundtrack is highly under appreciated. Mega Man 4 feels so passionate and not rushed out the door like MM2 and MM3, it has aged MUCH BETTER than the previous MM games. This game is timeless. 😁😁😁😁
For me thats the best Megaman you get the abillity from the third game and even a new one and i liked the Dr Cossack Story but damn was Dr Willy hard in this game and the Robot Master attacks were pretty good
The first MegaMan I played. I actually didn't know that each boss had a weakness so I only used the buster. I did figure out that hitting up and pause refills your energy, which helped me finish the game.
Not a bad entry, and I like the addition of Eddie (Fliptop), the Mega Buster, and the Wire and Balloon adaptors. However, was the slowdown in energy charging necessary? They probably realized how useless Rush Marine was, hence why they retired it in the next game. Skull Man's theme is my favorite, and the ending theme where Mega Man heads back home is nothing short of tranquil and relaxing.
the charge shot was slower to charge but it also didn't reset when you were hit which made it a hell of a lot more convenient than in the later games where it charges faster but you also lose your charge if you're hit
Idk why but I think Mothraya (Cossack 1) is my favorite "Castle Boss" in the entire series. First time I played this as a kid I was like "what the HELL is that awful thing"
I remember being afraid of the 1st boss (Toad Man) because during his intro, his energy meter filled up so slow that you thought he had more energy than Mega Man.
I always felt Dr. Cossack and Kalinka should have appeared in the epilogue, they are a central part of the story and they just disappear from the story after Cossack's castle stage, I always videos games were like movies, and if characters just disappear in a movie, that would be bad writing.
I was firmly into Genesis land when this came out and it would be another few months until a Super NES would appear under the Christmas tree, so I totally skipped this when it was new, though was still really curious about it and would've been happy to play it. I didn't until around the N64 era when I met someone who had a huge collection of NES games and I could tell, even though the glory days of the NES were long over, it didn't have much to say that hadn't been covered by 2 and 3 and the major addition it made to the series, the charging of the mega buster, I felt was more of a nuisance than anything. Why not just always keep it charging, drowning out the sound and locking your thumb on B the entire game? Still, it's leagues better than the uninspired 5th and totally forgettable sixth and still features some interesting and creative level designs. It's easily my third favorite in the original run even if it can't match the heights of its predecessors, but I don't think the charging gun made the game any better.
In my opinion, Mega Man 4 was going to be the last game in the series because Capcom wanted Mega Man to be exclusive to the NES, and Kids back in 1991 wanted both things. Then their parents said “If we get you Mega Man 4 for your birthday, you are not getting a Super Nintendo”
The last really good Mega Man game on the NES. I really liked the Mega Buster and different adaptors you could find. The music was not as good as the previous games but still memorable regardless really enjoyed this one.
This game, as well as Megaman 5, are kind of like the New Super Mario Bros of the classic Megaman games. *_"Why is that?"_* you're probably wondering right now. You know how every New Super Mario Bros game after the DS one never broke any new grounds? That's what MM4 & 5 are to me. They're not bad games by any means, just the safest ones.
@@NintendoComplete He's right, you can beat Dive Man using only R. Buster, when he charges at you make a jump to the opposite side of the room (a jump similar of Toad Man's), your timing has to be precise though, because you'll have to land just before Dive sets himself to fire, if done properly, Dive will fire his missile straight at you (just don´t move, only fire), once the 3rd missile is destroyed he'll charge at you again, repeat until destruction. It takes a bit of practice but in the end is just as easy as if you were using skull barrier...plus looks more crafty imho
It’s a 4/10 love what it tried to do but it really just didn’t do much other than the new mega buster and some new music new cool cut scenes at the beginning and that’s all I got out of just playing this
It's not that I don't like this game, it's just that I don't really understand why this game is liked so much. Not as much as 2 but I think there were better games.
People that say this is where the series started to decline are contrarian morons. It improves on the formula with the charge shot, and the graphics are actually better than other games. There wasn't much to improve on back then, and this is just an upgrade. If your expectations of a fourth entry in any series are for it to "feel fresh," you need to re-evaluate your expectations. A fourth entry should be gauged on how well the series has aged, what has been improved upon or reinvented, which may indeed feel fresh, but that shouldn't be an expectation, that's gravy.
4 has a special place to me because, it's the first Mega Man game I ever owned and, the first one I ever played.
same for me!

Same. First game I beat in one sitting and the music is so good I've had the themes memorized for like 20 years
Not me Mega Man 1 was the first I ever owned.
It wasn't quite as fresh feeling as the first three Mega Mans, but Mega Man 4 certainly didn't skimp on the quality. It's fantastic.
I agree. I’ve always thought that the song at 1:20 is amazing.
@@rjcupid MM2 #1

Not as fresh feeling? I had a breath of fresh air to use slide and charge buster. I got used to Mega Man X controls that 1-3 felt restricted

this game's graphic quality for nes is mindblowing.
I always found the intro to this fascinating. It feels like a 'soft reboot', like they were clearly aware this was the second half of the NES series.
For sure, it was like the “second life” of the series in the latter days of the NES. Almost all of us had moved on to the SNES by then. I personally never knew anyone who owned Mega Man 4, 5 or 6 during that era. I only played them much later on. I really enjoy the intro as well.

My absolute favourite MM on the nes!
Honestly the best of the 6 on nes in my opinion
@@abareamphibia6812For me of the 6 on the NES I prefer 6 or 2 but I do think 4 is pretty good
My personal favorite Mega Man game, just feels so right to play, even if the formula was no longer fresh.

It's so iconic and nostalgic the us version. I hate when the collections went with the Japanese versions

This is probably my 3rd favorite in the series after 3 and 2, but still a great game I have many fond memories of.
MM4 is my favorite in the series..I think it has the best array of robot master weapons. Pharaoh Shot and Drill Bomb were my most used.
The "Easiest Robot Master" in the Mega Man franchise goes to Toad Man.
Top Man Megaman 3. I struggled a bit the first times with Toad Man until I got the trick to slide down when he jumps
Pharoah ??
Air Man is pretty tame as well
Absolutely love this game and the soundtrack. My favorite Mega Man games are all on original NES.
It's a classic but better than Meganman II?
Bubble man vs Pharoh Man!? You're a madwoman! lol

the slowdown isn't a thing they added, it's just the result of the NES hardware reaching it's limit
