I have two ESEE Izulas in S35VN with the long micarta scales. They are quality knives. I do not, however, have mirror polished edges on any of my knives. I typically like toothy edges. To each, their own. Enjoyable video and discourse.
Hi Erica. I have been watching you for a while, and really appreciate you and your straightforward and honest style. Keep it up! As for Esee, I have several and have no serious issues with them, or the 1095. Though, I agree the handles kind of suck, so I usually upgrade mine. That said, do you have any non-custom brand and/or steel recommendations for a similar style knife that would primarily be used for outdoors tasks (wood processing, camp chores, etc.) and capable of harder uses? Corrosion resistance and easy of sharpening aren't priorities for me, as I generally maintain my knives pretty regularly and enjoy doing it. Toughness is important, and also to a lesser degree, light-ish in overall weight. I do a lot of backpacking, hiking, camping, and firemaking. Again, I really enjoy you and your content. Keep it up! Love from Minnesota! ✌🏼
@@Snodgrass.Elkheart hey there!!! So happy to see you enjoying the content! I don’t currently have any no n- custom options to recommend. I have not really found any LT Wright, ESEE, MKC, etc (typical production companies), to produce what I enjoy. I have a number of IMO lower cost custom outdoors knives. They perform WAY better than anything production I have ever used. I will keep my eyes peeled for you though! Cheers!
This is why I prefer softer steel. I do not have an hour or more to sharpen a knife. Softer steel knives are usually cheaper in cost also…you may need to sharpen more often but it takes a lot less time and equipment…
If you like "handfilling" knives you could try Opinel (folding knives in several sizes, very popular is No. 8, No. 9 is already a bit substantial, Carbon and 12C27 Sandvik Steel) or Mora Classic (fixed knives, the classic series has wooden handles). Both types are really good value and esp. Opinels invite you to do some modding :)
Great vid. I’ve been watching your work since you had really long dreadlocks and have enjoyed your progression…kind of like going from 100 grit rough gradually to 10,000 smooth & polished. Question: is there a reason you use such stiff paper (almost card stock) for your sharpness test instead of printer paper, magazine, catalog or phone book paper? Keep up the good work…yours is about always the first youtube I watch every day.
@@waltv6385 thanks for the support!!! I really appreciate it. I use printer paper as seen in this video. Same printer paper everyone else uses- it’s what’s available!
I am looking for my next stone...I currently use a sharpal(srry it's chinese lol) 325/1200 and a 9 micron spray on a strop...do you think i can just up the strop progression to like 5 and 1(or something like that).... or get a 2K+ stone AND the added strop progression....I can get shaving sharp but now I want more lol...

Your sharpening skills are out of this world, that cuts beautifully!!! I’d say that’s a fair and great description of Esee knives!
Thanks so much best!!!😊❤

@@PoeticallyCorrect thanks for stopping by!
Great to know that 1095 does well with a polished edge. I'll have to sharpen up mine soon, it's still on the factory edge currently.
It does incredible with one!😊
Good points! I like my Esse 3 in s35vn better than my 1095. I need the new one with 3D scales to see if it’s comfy enough for longer use
