After a year of Mustie1 videos I picked up a Echo string trimmer at the local transfer station someone threw out. Replaced the primer bulb ($5) and fuel lines ($7), cleaned the carb and it runs like new. Thanks Darren. You're a great teacher.
After watching Mustie1 for two years I had the confidence to pick a gene off the side of the road.. Gas tank was full of garbage so I got 1 from ebay. Trouble shoot the motor "as trained" from many videos and had to clean the carb. Just got it all fixed today.. My first small engine rescue. Runs like a champ..What a feeling..

Good for you congrats brother . I love repairing lawn equipment and small engines . My all around favorite thing to work on is any B series Honda motor but I love small engine as well . I've been working with carburators and all other parts of these machines since I was 12 years old, that was when my father guided me through successfully rebuilding my first carburator , it was from a snow blower he brought home that he got for free cssue it didn't run. I'll never forget the feeling back then of hearing that motor first fire up and run successfully like I said being only 12 years old. I'm now 36 and I will and can work on literally anything that is made of nuts bolts and screws. I've rebuild numerous engines of all types from two stroke chainsaws to modern day Japanese 4 cylinders to small block Chevy's and Jeep inline 6's. I've rebuilt numerous Manuel transmissions , rebuilt differentials , rack and pinion steering systems . I've also put entire new frames in full size diesal trucks, and spllicing in a section of a frame rail and strut tower on modern unibody cars as I do autobody collision repair , and welding and steel fabrication. I've made entire dump body's and tailgates from pure scratch for customers doing all the work myself , from running the metal brakes and sheers to using plasma cutters to cut out the measured sections of steel needed for a job . To running Miller 195 welders and laying beads over 3 feet long in one pass. I have made custom steel bumpers for trucks of all types , I've replaced quarter panels, rocker panels , entire vehicle support pillars inner structure and outer skin both in side impacts , I've replaced entire roof skins along with the support braces and A pillars all the way from the roof to the bottom of the firewall whee it ties into the rockers and floor structure die to rollovers . I've had numerous cars come in hit offset with the entire wheel, brake caliper rotor and knuckles all ripped clean off the car form they mpact and have had to replace all the subframes and entire suspensions down to every last componemt and down to the final wheel alignment being done by myself as well. I've replaced and rebuilt secirons of frames due to rust and rot on utility body's of flat beds , tree service trucks , gas delivery trucks , landscapers and Mason's dump body's . You name it and I've probably done it and can do iit . I don't pay anybody to do anything for me. A few months ago our dryer broke and my mother just about called a repairman I almost smacked her. I got looking at it and found the brush's in the electric motor were burnt up so I pulled the motel out , broke it down and replaced the brushes along with all the shaft support bearings while in there , then went ahead and replaced the drive belt too while I was in there .this wasn't something I'd ever done or read manual on. I just see all this stuff as common sense all it all is iis a bunch of nuts and bolts , screws and wires . I've never given up on a job and not completeld it either meaning theres no job I've ever started that I haven't finished on my own with no guidance of any sort except google occasionally to look up a specific fluid specification for a vehicle I'm working on. My favorite things to do is work on Honda 4cylinders , chainsaws and tackling electrical jobs or problems because I'm very capable in diagnosing and finding faulty sensors, bad grounds , broken wires , faulty electrical connectors and rebuilding entire SRS air bag restaint systems after they've been deployed , this goes for replacing entire dashes due to the passenger side bag blowing , replacing side curtain bags and headliners form them deploying to removing front seats and there foam and upulstry covers to replace a side impacts air bag in a seat them reinstall the foam and reupulster the seat with a new skin due to the bag blowing a huge rip in the old skin upon deployment . I also fix and resell lawn equipment like this guy does but I only get maybe 2-3 units a year because people don't give shit away around here , it's also a higher end middle class county so most people can afford to keep paying so one to repair there equipment .so I cant hardly ever find any roadside garbage finds I don't know how this guy finds so many lawn tractors and other random equipment . Shit I've gotten 1 free lawn tractor in my life off the side of the road , just 1 and this was 3 years ago. Prob will never happen again

You really sent me back in time with that covered bridge! My late wife loved those things and one of the last trips we made before she died of cancer almost eighteen years ago was to drive around Georgia and Alabama looking for old covered bridges in an old refurbished motor home.

Nice work, Mustie. For anyone else watching, if you don't have the special tool for adjusting the mixture screws, you can shove the plastic ends of electrical "Butt connectors" or crimp connectors onto the screws and turn them that way. No need to buy the special nut driver. The high end needle is usually the one that needs to be fattened up a little.
Thanks for the tip, I was wondering if I should try hacking a slot into them to use with a flathead, but they seemed a little thin. I'll see if I have anything around the house that could work, I'm thinking a pen body
On the weed eater I have someone actually used some sort of grinder or file to take out metal around the screws and it looks like they used pliers or something to try and gasp them and force turn them it’s a mess but it now works just now I have to find a solution a nice one to fix this so I can adjust them properly again.
@@galacticgalaxyonezerone7235 try using a dremel to grind slots for a flathead screwdriver. I'm assuming you can't make it any worse. Alternatively, I'm sure you can but the adjustment screws/needles by themselves, so maybe just remove them completely and replace them.
Just bought a battery powered trimmer. No more carb rebuilds, hard starts, new fuel lines and mixing gas. Love it. Insert battery and go. And you don't stink when you're done.
MAKE a spark tester. Crimp a lead with an alligator clip on the end to find a nearby ground. Just bend the side electrode away and crimp it on there. Works fine.
I was given 2 chain saws with the same problem an did the exact same thing an now I have two perfectly fine running chain saws!!! It's like no one wants to tinker with anything anymore just go out an buy a new one.
Amazon has various sizes in bulk, like 6-20 ft. sections. All the filters and shut-off valves too, most for about $10. Just make sure you get the correct size. Lowe's/Napa if you only need enough for one engine. If you're lucky enough to still have one in business, a hardware store might be a good option. My local Stihl/Echo service shop(which is also a hardware store) is where I get that sort of thing. They have good quality string in every size, mower blades for more than just the house brand, and all manner of chainsaw chains. Get my 2-stroke oil there too, they even sell it pre-mixed by the quart if you can't measure, or I guess if you don't use it often and really don't wanna waste any.
The mower wheels are insane. Got an old Honda 5 hp what for squeezing in where the tractor wont fit, broke a wheel. Now, I know we all gotta pay to play, but jaysus, $40 for a 14 inch disc and a skateboard bearing is asking a lot. It tempts one to get good with CAD and buy a 3d printer.
After watching many Mustie vids, I also lost my fear of carbs, and picked up a 4000 running watt generator off facebook market place for $50. Seller said it wouldn't start. Took it home. Had spark. Popped the float bowl and totally shitted over, and I mean BAD. The whole carb was black and reeked of varnish. Passages were totally solid. New carb, $14, and she fired right up and made power. No more suffering during power outages ! Thanks Sensei Mustie !
You have done the fuel lines backwards on this mate, the fuel is drawn through the carby with the primer bulb, as you can see your carby floods from priming which isnt right. will run but its not right. tank feed line to carb intake carb outlet to primer intake primer outlet back to tank
@@nathankoroush7918 I think it may have been meant to blow air into the tank (not filtered line) forcing gas through the filter and to the carb, but it seems to work great the way he's set it up. I'll trust him over my speculation any day.

I worked on mine just last night doing the exact same thing. Same machine except mine says snapper on it. The filter is supposed to be on the small line and you will need to clean screen in carb where small line enters carb, remove screw. Pretty sure if you tip gas away from small line it will die. Will also need to switch lines back on primer. Your Filter is on primer circuit now.

I have that same leaf blower complete with all the tubes and the vacuum bag, weed eater brand dated 1993,found mine a few months ago on the side of the road.I should start uploading videos of all the stuff I find that gets thrown out.I find fix and sell heaps of yard machinery lawn mowers and window airconditioners every week most just need some tlc to bring them back to life and make a few $$$.
That was the number one trouble with those trimmers. The primer bulbs would fail. I love ur videos working on small engines and big engines. Great job.
Also, it looks like you got it to run pretty well with the fuel direction reversed, the filter line goes to the carb at the pump cover, the primer return line to tank, primer input pulls fuel through carb second barb near metering cover. I think you had primer pushing gas through carb instead of pulling it.
Once again, you inspired me to try fix my equipment. I replace the carb on my line trimmer. Something I never would imagined trying. I took 10 minutes. Thank you!!
That's the model # tag, with the "358" on the top line denoting that Poulan/Weedeater made it for Sears. The second line is the serial #, and I'm guessing that the 07 at the front of the serial # denotes it was made in 2007. The online instructions at the Sears parts website show a publication date of December of 2006, so it makes sense that it is probably a 2007 model.
Your right about the adjustmensy not being easy. I had one acting up and instead of buying the special tool to adjust it i cut a groove with a dremel tool to use a screw driver.
Doesn't the rabbit come up outta the hole, look for it's filter and go back into the hole? Then get the length right for the carb? As long as the filter lies at the deepest point. Right? It's just a harmless little bunny.
Wow! I learned from the community this time! Good input re feed lines. I am pretty good with engines and used Echo for years where bulb is right on the carb. Now ...... I use a DEWALT 20 volt max trimmer and it’s great. Also blower, small chainsaw for limbs, and all my shop hand tools. All use one type of battery. Lithium came along just in time for my old age! No more cans of fuel mix! But love these vids as I do help neighbors etc with their gas machines. Always good to watch Professor Mustie1
I know a guy who picked up an old lawn mower at the roadside. He pulled up to his garage to unload it and a guy in a car pulled up, upset, and asked him why he took his mower. The first guy asked the guy in the car why he had set it out at the curb. The guy in the car replied that that is where he ran out of gas and needed to get some to fill it
'Finders keepers, bitch.' 😂 But in all seriousness I've often wondered if some of the things Mustie has picked up are actually not free goodies but things people have carelessly left unattended while they've gone to get gas/tools/a friend etc. Of course I'm not saying Mustie is wilfully stealing people's belongings, I reckon 99% of what he's picked up has been legitimately abandoned or given away. But there must be the odd occasion where someone has come back to their mower or whatever and thought 'oh shit....'
Reminds me of the time back when I was a young kid I picked up a scooter sitting upside in a hedge outside someone's house. Front wheel was missing, but I took it home and my Dad said he'd fix it which he did. Few days later, the father of the other kid who owned the scooter knocked at our house, furious. His son recognised me and his scooter. It'd been left outside, someone went to take it and then threw it in the hedge when they saw it was broken. Guess I should've asked the kid first if he still wanted it instead of assuming it was trash. Never did it again. And was known as the 'kid who nicks stuff' for a while after that. 😐
I found a practically brand new yard works mower tonight thrown out by garbage on a curb side. It's just revving between high and low and won't idle. I'm assuming it's just a carb cleaning. Tomorrow I begin... Thank you for all of these awesome videos to reference for us not so handy folks!
I'm absolutely shocked you left the leaf blower because it was missing the extension tube. That just doesn't seem like your style. I really like your vids keep up the good work.
I think because he knew it in his heart that the leaf blower had a big end bearing problem n not worth fixing unlike the whippersnipper that has the usual carb n old fuel line problem
I thought the same thing. Although, those leaf blowers are beyond shitty. Not even a throttle trigger on those things, just set it at full speed and go. However the trimmer also has a POS MTD power head that I’ve always found to be unreliable junk, but he took that lol.

Can't find freebies like that where I live they get snapped up to quick . I have found stuff many times on the curb or roadside in the past but less and less now days. But I did just get two nice trimmers today from a guy on craigslist , both look almost new and have spark and good compression . Paid $10 each . Both have completely dry fuel tanks so I am going to put some gas in them and see what happens. Update - They both run but won't stay running or idle . Looks like I have some carb / fuel system work to do.
Howdy!! THANK YOU for showing me how to fix my 32cc Craftsman weedeater!! Excact same problems as the one you picked up...except the weighted fuel filter. Mine had an air stone filter and was giving me fits as with half a tank and run out of gas. The ait stone was floating and not folowing the gas. Got a weighted fuel filter and did the adjustments and works great!! Thank you..again!! Steve

i bought a second hand strimmer and it refused to start. i ended up taking a few of your tips checking for spark and used a little petrol down the cylinder to tempt it back to life. in the end i worked out that it needed a new plug and you have to jam a foot slightly under the throttle when pull starting to get it to go. been watching and learning! thanks for your excellent tutorials, all the best from the UK.
The fuel lines were correct to begin with. You do not want the path of fuel from the filter to the primer then to the carb because it causes the engine to run lean due to intermittent fueling. It’s supposed to go from the filter directly to the carbs inlet then out the other side to the sucking side of the primer and push the fuel back into the tank like it was hooked up to begin with, you changed it so now it’s getting air in the lines and it’s not going to run correctly.
I love ya Mustie but you got something wrong on this one the lines to the primer were not hooked up incorrectly the primers on these and on most 2 stroke equipment manufactured since the early 1980's don't prime the way you think they do the primer only draws fuel into the carb it puts none into the engine. and it draws from the carb not from the tank. fuel line with filter runs to the carb inlet line from carb outlet runs to the inlet of the primer bulb then the outlet of the primer bulb runs to the tank as a return line the way you have it right now your trying to draw fuel through the primer bulb and it's causing a restriction in your flow. Still enjoyed the heck out of the video don't want to be one of those folks that only talk when they can point out something wrong
so what you are saying in not so many words is that the line that he didn't replace is the fuel line and is supposed to have the filter on it, and the primer is on the return side, with the side labeled 'in' going to the carb?
no he replaced the fuel pickup line that had broken off . lines go Pickup from tank with filter------inlet on carb outlet on carb-------inlet on purge bulb outlet on purge bulb---------return to tank. these systems are actually called purge systems they are designed to purge the air from the carb for easier /quicker starting everyone calls them primers though and that may be why a lot of people do exactly what Mustie did because that is how a primer would work but they aren't primer systems. a primer system would also need no choke plate.
One of the most reliable and best running weed wackers I ever own was a " Shindaiwa ". I got it slightly used from a lady who hated cutting her grass. I used it for over 14 years. I had a stroke of bad luck and gave it to a dude I knew. He used it for 3 more years and sold it to a guy he knew. Solid maintenance , good fuel and care kept it going that long. . They will run forever if the owner just do a l'il maintenance and not put straight gas in it...
Mustie the primer hoses were not backwards. Gas feed line go's directly into carburetor not the primer button. Primer button pulls gas out from Carb and pushes it back into tank. I have that same model and the way you installed fuel lines are incorrect.
Yeah. I replaced the rotted fuel lines on my Husqvarna 326, and they had been rotted off so long while it was put away for a few years that I couldn't figure out which line went where. As I recall, the directions said to do just as you said. If I had not read the inst. likely I would have hooked them up backwards also. Yeah. The idea is to draw fuel pass the carb inlet and in doing so brings fuel up to but not forcing it into the carb. The engine draws the fuel into the carb.
Oxygenated alcohol gas eats small engine fuel lines. When I lived in the city, you had to put equipment in the back of a truck to get it to disappear, if it sat on the curb they knew it was broke. I got rid of old bike, dishwasher, tv that way
only in america, in the UK, it has to be completly parted out, and set fire to, then left to rust for 20 years, only then will it be left, usually right outside your own door in your way, along with a stained wet mattress and a broken mouldy refrigerator, and if you touch it, someone photographs you and reports that you dumped it

While it was fun watching you discover the mysteries of weed whackers (and your repair was one of your easier ones), I got the biggest kicks out of seeing your dust covered, yet unopened package of fuel line and the covered bridge and ravine bonus footage. The former reminding me of the many unopened packages I have around of various knobs, hinges, latches and other less identifiable parts. And the latter evoking 45 + year old memories of my early "playgounds". Good stuff!
I think you can set the mixture screws faster if you dial in the high speed first, then work on the low speed - with the idle speed turned down low. This because the low speed adjustment has insignificant influence on high rpm's, but high speed adjustment greatly influences how the engine revs up from idle.
I can watch this all day long. Mustie you are amazing. Thank you for sharing your years of knowledge with us. I love all things "engine" if it's got a carburator it's a plus.
I have the same weedwackers but mine is the poulan pro model with the interchangeable shaft, blower, curved shaft, edger, attachments, and I have almost all of the attachments, it's my personal weedwacker, it never dies, great video.
skaaltel all in how you care for them. I have a green Wally world weed eater from 2007 that has many hours on it. One new carb, several sets of fuel lines, a muffler screen cleanout and a straight shaft conversion from someone's trash in 10 years and it just won't die.
A friend of mine sent me a little Weedwhacker Featherlite four years ago. I use it in places in which my big Husqvarna and Stihl are just too difficult to get into. I've used the Weedwhacker four seasons now, at least 20 times per season and have never had a problem with it. It feels like junk and I'm sure it would be nearly impossible to fix if something went wrong with it, but it just keeps on running and running, is very light and handy and most importantly, starts every time on the second or third pull.
Yeah, most of them don't have a clutch.. you can't sit them down running. I've worked on a bunch of them, and when your done, all you have left is running Junk that will be a PITA, next time you need it...
Great video. I have 2 of these. Maybe different model. I love mine. I'm on 17 acres in SW Washington. And have a blade on one, that I use for blackberries. Works awesome after all these years. Mine are both cold blooded too. Lol
At the end of the season run all equipment out of gas and disconnect the fuel line change the oil if needed and replace all filters possible plug at the start of the new season years of trouble free service ahead
Nice fix and Very Coincidental Mustie1. 3 days ago (just before you published this) I noticed my little 33cc chainsaw wasn't oiling the chain and it was the oiler tube that had deteriorated in the tank. I got lucky and (as you did) found an old unopened fuel line pack (covered in mouse poop), used that line to replace the oiler line and wala, oiling again. I like your "snip tube at a steep angle" to feed through approach rather than my feed wire through, connect to tube and pull. I know the new gas will deteriorate fuel lines but was surprised that bar chain oil does it also.
Well craftsman is not a good brand anymore is why. The last 2 lawn mowers i have bought that have been craftsman have been junk. I call craftsman they tell me to call sears. Call sears they tell me to call craftsman. I mean the new mower i bought after the 2nd use the paint under it where the blade is came off. Its also a rear wheel one because backyard is a hill and the hole for the grass to come out is too small for mowing and does not make it in and plugs up. Can not fill the bag more than %50 of it because the back is on a 35 degree slope coming up from the deck. And its suppose to be a 4 speed but only 3 will work at anyone time. Had a repair guy come out and said yup thats all you get you are lucky you get 3 speeds most of the time only 2 work. Craftsman knows this and still sells this junk. Only saving grace is that i bought it on sale for $250 when it was normaly $650 no wonder why it was on sale. And the other saving grace is that it does have a good briggs and stratton engine. The tech also told me that craftsman buys all the parts of the mower from different places and slaps there name on it, craftsman has not made a mower in a while and the quality of it has gone down a lot in the past few years. Too bad me and my family have been buying craftsman stuff for years but not with the price and how fast it falls apart its not worth its weight in scrap.
peter55343 I will never fix anything craftsman again. Cost me too much time and money to fix it. Sears sell these cheap. Don't buy the warranty cause it will double the price. Thats how they make money. Guy at the service ctr just looked at it and told me buy new one. My warranty don't cover a bent Shaft. 2years later on u tube. I saw a guy take off the flywheel and changed a $.50 key. I changed mine and it started on the 1st pull Great right? No! Every month I'm replacing a part.
I once worked at a place doing small motor servicing and the rule of thumb was to screw both mixture screws in on a 2 stroke and back off 1 and a quarter turns then adjust from there but you are right about it should sound like it is growling and not running sweet at full revs. Liked the video bro it bought back memories
Thank you for the find and repair video. I really enjoy watching a "mechanical mind" work and fix things. I gave up on my very old Weedeater and bought the 40v rechargeable one. Much easier on my shoulder with no pulling the start cord.
It's forceps, but that's not the point. Since the 70's, we all know them as roach clips. Like the pie tins we used to put our seedy weed in to strain with a matchbook cover. Don't see much of that these days either.
Once again I learned several useful things from one of your videos. Also, the placement of your camera(s) in your videos is excellent. It seems that the placement always allows the viewer to see what you are doing and you always try to make sure that the viewer sees what you want them to see. Nice job. Your videos are very enjoyable.
Hey bud I been watching your videos for a while. I live in the twin cities of Minnesota. I fix and sell small engine stuff as a hobby. I have sold 150 mowers so far this year. This is about 30 of us in the area that do it. I am the king though lol I outsold everyone this year. I hope u keep making videos. U have plenty of variety. I will keep watching and take care bud.
Nice find and repair. Amazing what people toss out on the curb. And 90% of the problems with this old lawn equipment is fuel related. There is a screen inside the carb that feeds the needle valve, that tends to get clogged, and sometimes the diaphragm needs replacing.

You got a dang good deal there! A couple hours work fixing and adjusting, the price of gas to find it, go pick up fuel line for it, and get it running. Trim on Brother!, trim on!!!

Good for you congrats brother . I love repairing lawn equipment and small engines . My all around favorite thing to work on is any B series Honda motor but I love small engine as well . I've been working with carburators and all other parts of these machines since I was 12 years old, that was when my father guided me through successfully rebuilding my first carburator , it was from a snow blower he brought home that he got for free cssue it didn't run. I'll never forget the feeling back then of hearing that motor first fire up and run successfully like I said being only 12 years old. I'm now 36 and I will and can work on literally anything that is made of nuts bolts and screws. I've rebuild numerous engines of all types from two stroke chainsaws to modern day Japanese 4 cylinders to small block Chevy's and Jeep inline 6's. I've rebuilt numerous Manuel transmissions , rebuilt differentials , rack and pinion steering systems . I've also put entire new frames in full size diesal trucks, and spllicing in a section of a frame rail and strut tower on modern unibody cars as I do autobody collision repair , and welding and steel fabrication. I've made entire dump body's and tailgates from pure scratch for customers doing all the work myself , from running the metal brakes and sheers to using plasma cutters to cut out the measured sections of steel needed for a job . To running Miller 195 welders and laying beads over 3 feet long in one pass. I have made custom steel bumpers for trucks of all types , I've replaced quarter panels, rocker panels , entire vehicle support pillars inner structure and outer skin both in side impacts , I've replaced entire roof skins along with the support braces and A pillars all the way from the roof to the bottom of the firewall whee it ties into the rockers and floor structure die to rollovers . I've had numerous cars come in hit offset with the entire wheel, brake caliper rotor and knuckles all ripped clean off the car form they mpact and have had to replace all the subframes and entire suspensions down to every last componemt and down to the final wheel alignment being done by myself as well. I've replaced and rebuilt secirons of frames due to rust and rot on utility body's of flat beds , tree service trucks , gas delivery trucks , landscapers and Mason's dump body's . You name it and I've probably done it and can do iit . I don't pay anybody to do anything for me. A few months ago our dryer broke and my mother just about called a repairman I almost smacked her. I got looking at it and found the brush's in the electric motor were burnt up so I pulled the motel out , broke it down and replaced the brushes along with all the shaft support bearings while in there , then went ahead and replaced the drive belt too while I was in there .this wasn't something I'd ever done or read manual on. I just see all this stuff as common sense all it all is iis a bunch of nuts and bolts , screws and wires . I've never given up on a job and not completeld it either meaning theres no job I've ever started that I haven't finished on my own with no guidance of any sort except google occasionally to look up a specific fluid specification for a vehicle I'm working on. My favorite things to do is work on Honda 4cylinders , chainsaws and tackling electrical jobs or problems because I'm very capable in diagnosing and finding faulty sensors, bad grounds , broken wires , faulty electrical connectors and rebuilding entire SRS air bag restaint systems after they've been deployed , this goes for replacing entire dashes due to the passenger side bag blowing , replacing side curtain bags and headliners form them deploying to removing front seats and there foam and upulstry covers to replace a side impacts air bag in a seat them reinstall the foam and reupulster the seat with a new skin due to the bag blowing a huge rip in the old skin upon deployment . I also fix and resell lawn equipment like this guy does but I only get maybe 2-3 units a year because people don't give shit away around here , it's also a higher end middle class county so most people can afford to keep paying so one to repair there equipment .so I cant hardly ever find any roadside garbage finds I don't know how this guy finds so many lawn tractors and other random equipment . Shit I've gotten 1 free lawn tractor in my life off the side of the road , just 1 and this was 3 years ago. Prob will never happen again

You really sent me back in time with that covered bridge! My late wife loved those things and one of the last trips we made before she died of cancer almost eighteen years ago was to drive around Georgia and Alabama looking for old covered bridges in an old refurbished motor home.

Nice work, Mustie. For anyone else watching, if you don't have the special tool for adjusting the mixture screws, you can shove the plastic ends of electrical "Butt connectors" or crimp connectors onto the screws and turn them that way. No need to buy the special nut driver. The high end needle is usually the one that needs to be fattened up a little.
Thanks for the tip, I was wondering if I should try hacking a slot into them to use with a flathead, but they seemed a little thin. I'll see if I have anything around the house that could work, I'm thinking a pen body
On the weed eater I have someone actually used some sort of grinder or file to take out metal around the screws and it looks like they used pliers or something to try and gasp them and force turn them it’s a mess but it now works just now I have to find a solution a nice one to fix this so I can adjust them properly again.
@@galacticgalaxyonezerone7235 try using a dremel to grind slots for a flathead screwdriver. I'm assuming you can't make it any worse.
Alternatively, I'm sure you can but the adjustment screws/needles by themselves, so maybe just remove them completely and replace them.

Just bought a battery powered trimmer. No more carb rebuilds, hard starts, new fuel lines and mixing gas. Love it. Insert battery and go. And you don't stink when you're done.

MAKE a spark tester. Crimp a lead with an alligator clip on the end to find a nearby ground.
Just bend the side electrode away and crimp it on there. Works fine.

I was given 2 chain saws with the same problem an did the exact same thing an now I have two perfectly fine running chain saws!!! It's like no one wants to tinker with anything anymore just go out an buy a new one.

napa lowes ect has it.
Amazon has various sizes in bulk, like 6-20 ft. sections. All the filters and shut-off valves too, most for about $10. Just make sure you get the correct size. Lowe's/Napa if you only need enough for one engine.
If you're lucky enough to still have one in business, a hardware store might be a good option. My local Stihl/Echo service shop(which is also a hardware store) is where I get that sort of thing. They have good quality string in every size, mower blades for more than just the house brand, and all manner of chainsaw chains. Get my 2-stroke oil there too, they even sell it pre-mixed by the quart if you can't measure, or I guess if you don't use it often and really don't wanna waste any.

The mower wheels are insane. Got an old Honda 5 hp what for squeezing in where the tractor wont fit, broke a wheel. Now, I know we all gotta pay to play, but jaysus, $40 for a 14 inch disc and a skateboard bearing is asking a lot.

After watching many Mustie vids, I also lost my fear of carbs, and picked up a 4000 running watt generator off facebook market place for $50. Seller said it wouldn't start. Took it home. Had spark. Popped the float bowl and totally shitted over, and I mean BAD. The whole carb was black and reeked of varnish. Passages were totally solid. New carb, $14, and she fired right up and made power. No more suffering during power outages ! Thanks Sensei Mustie !
You have done the fuel lines backwards on this mate, the fuel is drawn through the carby with the primer bulb, as you can see your carby floods from priming which isnt right. will run but its not right.

I worked on mine just last night doing the exact same thing. Same machine except mine says snapper on it. The filter is supposed to be on the small line and you will need to clean screen in carb where small line enters carb, remove screw. Pretty sure if you tip gas away from small line it will die. Will also need to switch lines back on primer. Your Filter is on primer circuit now.

I have that same leaf blower complete with all the tubes and the vacuum bag, weed eater brand dated 1993,found mine a few months ago on the side of the road.I should start uploading videos of all the stuff I find that gets thrown out.I find fix and sell heaps of yard machinery lawn mowers and window airconditioners every week most just need some tlc to bring them back to life and make a few $$$.

That was the number one trouble with those trimmers. The primer bulbs would fail. I love ur videos working on small engines and big engines. Great job.
Also, it looks like you got it to run pretty well with the fuel direction reversed, the filter line goes to the carb at the pump cover, the primer return line to tank, primer input pulls fuel through carb second barb near metering cover. I think you had primer pushing gas through carb instead of pulling it.

That's the model # tag, with the "358" on the top line denoting that Poulan/Weedeater made it for Sears. The second line is the serial #, and I'm guessing that the 07 at the front of the serial # denotes it was made in 2007. The online instructions at the Sears parts website show a publication date of December of 2006, so it makes sense that it is probably a 2007 model.

Your right about the adjustmensy not being easy. I had one acting up and instead of buying the special tool to adjust it i cut a groove with a dremel tool to use a screw driver.

Wow! I learned from the community this time! Good input re feed lines. I am pretty good with engines and used Echo for years where bulb is right on the carb. Now ...... I use a DEWALT 20 volt max trimmer and it’s great. Also blower, small chainsaw for limbs, and all my shop hand tools. All use one type of battery. Lithium came along just in time for my old age! No more cans of fuel mix! But love these vids as I do help neighbors etc with their gas machines. Always good to watch Professor Mustie1
I know a guy who picked up an old lawn mower at the roadside. He pulled up to his garage to unload it and a guy in a car pulled up, upset, and asked him why he took his mower. The first guy asked the guy in the car why he had set it out at the curb. The guy in the car replied that that is where he ran out of gas and needed to get some to fill it

But in all seriousness I've often wondered if some of the things Mustie has picked up are actually not free goodies but things people have carelessly left unattended while they've gone to get gas/tools/a friend etc.
Of course I'm not saying Mustie is wilfully stealing people's belongings, I reckon 99% of what he's picked up has been legitimately abandoned or given away. But there must be the odd occasion where someone has come back to their mower or whatever and thought 'oh shit....'
Reminds me of the time back when I was a young kid I picked up a scooter sitting upside in a hedge outside someone's house. Front wheel was missing, but I took it home and my Dad said he'd fix it which he did.
Few days later, the father of the other kid who owned the scooter knocked at our house, furious. His son recognised me and his scooter. It'd been left outside, someone went to take it and then threw it in the hedge when they saw it was broken.
Guess I should've asked the kid first if he still wanted it instead of assuming it was trash. Never did it again. And was known as the 'kid who nicks stuff' for a while after that. 😐

I thought the same thing. Although, those leaf blowers are beyond shitty. Not even a throttle trigger on those things, just set it at full speed and go. However the trimmer also has a POS MTD power head that I’ve always found to be unreliable junk, but he took that lol.

Can't find freebies like that where I live they get snapped up to quick . I have found stuff many times on the curb or roadside in the past but less and less now days. But I did just get two nice trimmers today from a guy on craigslist , both look almost new and have spark and good compression . Paid $10 each . Both have completely dry fuel tanks so I am going to put some gas in them and see what happens. Update - They both run but won't stay running or idle . Looks like I have some carb / fuel system work to do.

Howdy!! THANK YOU for showing me how to fix my 32cc Craftsman weedeater!! Excact same problems as the one you picked up...except the weighted fuel filter. Mine had an air stone filter and was giving me fits as with half a tank and run out of gas. The ait stone was floating and not folowing the gas. Got a weighted fuel filter and did the adjustments and works great!! Thank you..again!! Steve
Primer doesn't feel right because it's a purge system not a primer. You wan't to pull the fuel not force it into the carb.

i bought a second hand strimmer and it refused to start. i ended up taking a few of your tips checking for spark and used a little petrol down the cylinder to tempt it back to life. in the end i worked out that it needed a new plug and you have to jam a foot slightly under the throttle when pull starting to get it to go. been watching and learning! thanks for your excellent tutorials, all the best from the UK.
The fuel lines were correct to begin with. You do not want the path of fuel from the filter to the primer then to the carb because it causes the engine to run lean due to intermittent fueling. It’s supposed to go from the filter directly to the carbs inlet then out the other side to the sucking side of the primer and push the fuel back into the tank like it was hooked up to begin with, you changed it so now it’s getting air in the lines and it’s not going to run correctly.
Lucky again! And because of extensive experience and knowledge it was repairable!
I love ya Mustie but you got something wrong on this one the lines to the primer were not hooked up incorrectly the primers on these and on most 2 stroke equipment manufactured since the early 1980's don't prime the way you think they do the primer only draws fuel into the carb it puts none into the engine. and it draws from the carb not from the tank. fuel line with filter runs to the carb inlet line from carb outlet runs to the inlet of the primer bulb then the outlet of the primer bulb runs to the tank as a return line the way you have it right now your trying to draw fuel through the primer bulb and it's causing a restriction in your flow. Still enjoyed the heck out of the video don't want to be one of those folks that only talk when they can point out something wrong

so what you are saying in not so many words is that the line that he didn't replace is the fuel line and is supposed to have the filter on it, and the primer is on the return side, with the side labeled 'in' going to the carb?
no he replaced the fuel pickup line that had broken off . lines go Pickup from tank with filter------inlet on carb outlet on carb-------inlet on purge bulb outlet on purge bulb---------return to tank. these systems are actually called purge systems they are designed to purge the air from the carb for easier /quicker starting everyone calls them primers though and that may be why a lot of people do exactly what Mustie did because that is how a primer would work but they aren't primer systems. a primer system would also need no choke plate.

One of the most reliable and best running weed wackers I ever own was a " Shindaiwa ". I got it slightly used from a lady who hated cutting her grass. I used it for over 14 years. I had a stroke of bad luck and gave it to a dude I knew. He used it for 3 more years and sold it to a guy he knew. Solid maintenance , good fuel and care kept it going that long. . They will run forever if the owner just do a l'il maintenance and not put straight gas in it...
Mustie the primer hoses were not backwards. Gas feed line go's directly into carburetor not the primer button. Primer button pulls gas out from Carb and pushes it back into tank. I have that same model and the way you installed fuel lines are incorrect.
Yeah. I replaced the rotted fuel lines on my Husqvarna 326, and they had been rotted off so long while it was put away for a few years that I couldn't figure out which line went where. As I recall, the directions said to do just as you said. If I had not read the inst. likely I would have hooked them up backwards also. Yeah. The idea is to draw fuel pass the carb inlet and in doing so brings fuel up to but not forcing it into the carb. The engine draws the fuel into the carb.
Finally a guy that realizes that a line trimmer doesn't need to be run at wide open throttle to trim a little grass near the fence. Good job as usual.
Oxygenated alcohol gas eats small engine fuel lines. When I lived in the city, you had to put equipment in the back of a truck to get it to disappear, if it sat on the curb they knew it was broke. I got rid of old bike, dishwasher, tv that way

only in america, in the UK, it has to be completly parted out, and set fire to, then left to rust for 20 years, only then will it be left, usually right outside your own door in your way, along with a stained wet mattress and a broken mouldy refrigerator, and if you touch it, someone photographs you and reports that you dumped it

While it was fun watching you discover the mysteries of weed whackers (and your repair was one of your easier ones), I got the biggest kicks out of seeing your dust covered, yet unopened package of fuel line and the covered bridge and ravine bonus footage. The former reminding me of the many unopened packages I have around of various knobs, hinges, latches and other less identifiable parts. And the latter evoking 45 + year old memories of my early "playgounds".

I think you can set the mixture screws faster if you dial in the high speed first, then work on the low speed - with the idle speed turned down low. This because the low speed adjustment has insignificant influence on high rpm's, but high speed adjustment greatly influences how the engine revs up from idle.

I have the same weedwackers but mine is the poulan pro model with the interchangeable shaft, blower, curved shaft, edger, attachments, and I have almost all of the attachments, it's my personal weedwacker, it never dies, great video.

skaaltel all in how you care for them. I have a green Wally world weed eater from 2007 that has many hours on it. One new carb, several sets of fuel lines, a muffler screen cleanout and a straight shaft conversion from someone's trash in 10 years and it just won't die.
A friend of mine sent me a little Weedwhacker Featherlite four years ago. I use it in places in which my big Husqvarna and Stihl are just too difficult to get into. I've used the Weedwhacker four seasons now, at least 20 times per season and have never had a problem with it. It feels like junk and I'm sure it would be nearly impossible to fix if something went wrong with it, but it just keeps on running and running, is very light and handy and most importantly, starts every time on the second or third pull.
Yeah, most of them don't have a clutch.. you can't sit them down running. I've worked on a bunch of them, and when your done, all you have left is running Junk that will be a PITA, next time you need it...

Great video. I have 2 of these. Maybe different model. I love mine. I'm on 17 acres in SW Washington. And have a blade on one, that I use for blackberries. Works awesome after all these years. Mine are both cold blooded too. Lol
Filter to carb IN, carb OUT to primer bulb IN, primer bulb OUT to tank return.
At the end of the season run all equipment out of gas and disconnect the fuel line change the oil if needed and replace all filters possible plug at the start of the new season years of trouble free service ahead

The trick is to use non ethanol gas. Ethanol screws them up every time. It took me a long time to figure this one out.

Nice fix and Very Coincidental Mustie1. 3 days ago (just before you published this) I noticed my little 33cc chainsaw wasn't oiling the chain and it was the oiler tube that had deteriorated in the tank. I got lucky and (as you did) found an old unopened fuel line pack (covered in mouse poop), used that line to replace the oiler line and wala, oiling again. I like your "snip tube at a steep angle" to feed through approach rather than my feed wire through, connect to tube and pull. I know the new gas will deteriorate fuel lines but was surprised that bar chain oil does it also.
Put it outside with a $150,- sign on it... Craftsman don't sell these anymore, so they're rare... :P
Well craftsman is not a good brand anymore is why. The last 2 lawn mowers i have bought that have been craftsman have been junk. I call craftsman they tell me to call sears. Call sears they tell me to call craftsman. I mean the new mower i bought after the 2nd use the paint under it where the blade is came off.
Its also a rear wheel one because backyard is a hill and the hole for the grass to come out is too small for mowing and does not make it in and plugs up. Can not fill the bag more than %50 of it because the back is on a 35 degree slope coming up from the deck.
And its suppose to be a 4 speed but only 3 will work at anyone time. Had a repair guy come out and said yup thats all you get you are lucky you get 3 speeds most of the time only 2 work. Craftsman knows this and still sells this junk. Only saving grace is that i bought it on sale for $250 when it was normaly $650 no wonder why it was on sale. And the other saving grace is that it does have a good briggs and stratton engine.
The tech also told me that craftsman buys all the parts of the mower from different places and slaps there name on it, craftsman has not made a mower in a while and the quality of it has gone down a lot in the past few years. Too bad me and my family have been buying craftsman stuff for years but not with the price and how fast it falls apart its not worth its weight in scrap.

Don't buy the warranty cause it will double the price. Thats how they make money. Guy at the service ctr just looked at it and told me buy new one. My warranty don't cover a bent
Shaft. 2years later on u tube. I saw a guy take off the flywheel and changed a $.50 key. I changed mine and it started on the 1st pull

I once worked at a place doing small motor servicing and the rule of thumb was to screw both mixture screws in on a 2 stroke and back off 1 and a quarter turns then adjust from there but you are right about it should sound like it is growling and not running sweet at full revs. Liked the video bro it bought back memories

Thank you for the find and repair video. I really enjoy watching a "mechanical mind" work and fix things. I gave up on my very old Weedeater and bought the 40v rechargeable one. Much easier on my shoulder with no pulling the start cord.

It's forceps, but that's not the point. Since the 70's, we all know them as roach clips. Like the pie tins we used to put our seedy weed in to strain with a matchbook cover. Don't see much of that these days either.
Once again I learned several useful things from one of your videos. Also, the placement of your camera(s) in your videos is excellent. It seems that the placement always allows the viewer to see what you are doing and you always try to make sure that the viewer sees what you want them to see. Nice job. Your videos are very enjoyable.

As soon as you pressed the primer bulb and found no pressure, that's the first clue that there is a broken fuel line somewhere.
Or the fuel lines are hooked up backwards.
Right- they were hooked up backwards after he replaced them. They were broken initially, which prompted him to replace them.
The lines were backwards when he took it apart he confirmed it at 13:26. After he replaced them he hooked them up correctly and it fired up.

Hey bud I been watching your videos for a while. I live in the twin cities of Minnesota. I fix and sell small engine stuff as a hobby. I have sold 150 mowers so far this year. This is about 30 of us in the area that do it. I am the king though lol I outsold everyone this year. I hope u keep making videos. U have plenty of variety. I will keep watching and take care bud.

Nice find and repair. Amazing what people toss out on the curb. And 90% of the problems with this old lawn equipment is fuel related. There is a screen inside the carb that feeds the needle valve, that tends to get clogged, and sometimes the diaphragm needs replacing.

You got a dang good deal there! A couple hours work fixing and adjusting, the price of gas to find it, go pick up fuel line for it, and get it running. Trim on Brother!, trim on!!!
