"and this 6 rules out a 7 from here so now 7 is locked into this domino" he said, with the given 7 looking at that pencilmark 3 squares down. It's constantly baffling how Simon is able to see logic that I can barely follow and somehow whiffs on the most basic pencilmark ruleouts in the game :P

To be honest, I feared that he will overlook it till the end of the puzzle like usual. I am glad that this was cleared quite fast for Simons standards :D No hating on him! He is the king of logic in my opinion but his scanning lacks so far behind that its, as you said, baffling at times.

@@serebix3685 His scanning doesn't lack behind. While the viewer is fixated on that single error, Simon is considering several other options at once, all the while elaborating his thought process to the viewer.
Would love to see any viewer that criticizes Simon's obliviousness create a video in a similar fashion and upload for the world to see.

I’ve seen Simon solve hundreds of puzzles, but this one takes the win… I’VE NEVER FELT SO FRUSTRATED IN MY LIFE!!!
You solved this puzzle with pure randomness, pulling out a diagonal that highlighted cells when *sudoku* of all things could’ve solved the puzzle 😭

Simon is undoubtedly an expert solver. I have been watching CTC for over a year now basically daily. And I have to say his ability to see logic in some of these puzzles is extraordinary. With that being said. It’s very intriguing watching and being able to see how his brain is processing the puzzle differently. Because I am arguably a medium level solver. At no point able to do most of these videos. I rely on scanning more than anything else. Simon is constantly looking for the more beautiful logic in the puzzle which is why I think he misses the simple stuff that has us yelling “THERES A SEVEN THAT GOES RIGHT THERE!!!!” For 5-10 min of the video. Good work Simon. Love the daily content. You’re my lunch break entertainment.

This puzzle has some awesome geometry.
One thing I noted is that the shape of the four circumferential blocks implies an equivalence between the four corner digits and the four diagonally adjacent squares within them (I found this by drawing a ring like Simon shows in another video with a Phistomefel puzzle).
I also noticed that fully colouring in the three blocks present in the top two rows, then cancelling the top two rows themselves, leaves a new shape of nine squares (which must contain one full set of the digits) on the right of the grid. By comparison with the original block in the top right corner, the 2x2 square in the top right is equivalent to the 2x2 square of the 'inverted worm' shape, as Simon calls it in fhe video.
I also noticed that by comparing the four circumferential blocks and then 2x9 rectangles they sit in on each side of the grid (which must contain two full sets of the digits) it's quite easy to establish some equivalences between the 1x5 strips which are in the middle of the two perimeter rows/columns on the four sides of the grid. These in turn allow some equivalences to be established between individual squares, by comparing the single rows and columns with equivalent digits in the middle five squares.

What I find absolutely beautiful and that Simon hints at but seems to not mention is that the pattern of knights moves and diagonals repeats for every digits. If you go from left to right and wrap the grid (if you exit from the top, you come back in at the bottom), the position of any given digit always follows the pattern:
knight move - knights move - diagonal - diagonal - diagonal - diagonal - knight move - knights move
From what I understand from the solve, the diagonals seem to be a consequence of the "2" regions, and the knights move from the "worm" regions.
I find that really beautiful to look at, to be honest. Phistomefel is really such a genius setter.

I noticed there was a repeating pattern at 39:11, and then stopped and filled in 4, 6, 7, and colour-coded the rest of the gird, and then I watched to 43:49, where you mentioned that 6 can't be next to three, and then I was like wait I think I can solve this, and did! Obviously I couldn't have done it without your help, but I never would have thought I could solve it at all :))

Absolutely magical. I got a couple of steps in, then needed a hint to get un-stuck, after which it was a very smooth solve. Actually, I ended up splitting the "orange" cells into four separate colours along the way - once everything was coloured, it all solved in seconds. Absolutely brilliant, and definitely one of my favourite from Phistomefel.

20:47 you can, by Sudoku of all things. The third from top region sees a 4 everywhere but that corner, and once you place that 4, the same becomes true of the second from top region. It then rebounds to the left side to fix the 4 and 7, giving you the 4 for the right hand box in r8c9, placing the final 4 in r9c8

I love these geometry-based puzzles. They actually seem doable to me where are some of the puzzles that are done on here are way over my head. I did this one in about 26 minutes. I had a little faster start as I noticed the geometry with the sevens within the first two minutes. Given that head start and the fact that Simon has to take time to explain what he is doing to the audience I think we was close on pacing.

  • @samplename5159

I followed the "law of leftovers" a little deeper and the run of digits r2c3-r2c7 can't be orange, has to appear in row 1 in the upper worm, therefore has to be the same as r9c3-r9c7 and this and analogous at the bottom gives equivalence between worm heads and places 7s and 4s a little faster. I must've enjoyed the coloring excercises because before i knew it an hour went by :) Simon definitely turned back into a stormtrooper, but it's understandable with all the excitement.

I'm reasonably certain that Simon possesses the world's most extreme ratio of 'puzzle solving ability' :: 'basic sudoku scanning'.
That row 2, #7 pencil mark that was eventually 'resolved' via a painstakingly earned 6 was also ruled out by a ... Given digit. 🤣
I could never solve this myself, but I can certainly laugh when I somehow find a deduction before Simon. It's like watching Jeopardy. I could never win the thing but feel great when I know the answer to a question someone gets wrong! Love seeing these Simon/Phistomefel battles. When Phistomefel finally wins I hope we get that video too (with the accompanying Phistomefel solve).

Interesting that the whole grid seems to follow a pattern. If you envisage the grid as a sphere, and start from r1c1 you can do 2 vertical knight's moves, a run of 5 diagonals, and another 2 knight's moves. This works for all digits down column 1.

  • @timgilbert9572
    @timgilbert9572 ปีที่แล้ว

One thing that became obvious to me pretty quickly was that 4 was always above 7 and later blue was always below it, 6 was always above purple, and came to quickly realize that each column was in the exact same order of digits. The pattern became incredibly obvious with the way he colored everything.
