    And this shows the hints that Serie cared about Flamme, but because of how fast humans age and die compared to her, she keeps herself at a distance to avoid the loss. But still remembers her favourite spell and how she looked when she was little and her wishes.

      That image of little Flamme walking hand in hand with Serie looking up at her happily talking about her ideas and smiling always makes me feel like I'm about to tear up.
      I don't understand how anyone could watch this show and take Serie's comments at face value and conclude that she didn't actually care about that little girl who looked up to her with clear adoration.
      If Serie didn't love Flamme and she hadn't shown it to her in many ways over the years, that little girl wouldn't have looked at her like that or held her hand that way and adult Flamme wouldn't have given off that clear "Oh, mom. You and your mean old lady act. What am I gonna do with you?" throughout that scene when she introduced Frieren to Serie for the first time.
      Serie's there talking trash about how Frieren lacks ambition and Serie-ing up the place and Flamme just disagrees with her, but always with a little smile on her face because she knows the real Serie and that there's a lot more to her than this hardass almost omnipotent immortal mage.

    this is the episode i remember the best....not because of the epic animation or the intense fight...no, this is the episode that i had to drive to McDonald's in the pouring rain to watch, because the storm knocked out my wifi, and my phone couldn't handle rendering the animation in 1080p on my data. i ordered cookies and watched this episode in the corner with my hoodie over my head, soaking wet. great times. this episode brings back a ton of memories.

    Its such a great symbolic shot of Serie turning her back on the sun, while Frieren facing it with a grin accepting the new.
    Its fitting their characters and phylosophies of viewing magic

    Serie's words are so harsh, but her non-verbals and the flashback of little Flamme happily holding her hand and running around tell a very different story.

    According to Fern, Frieren said basic spells are enough to fight mages of this era, and true to that statement the first time we see Frieren using fancy attacks is against herself (a mage of another era).

    • @hulmhochberg8129
      @hulmhochberg8129 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      At the same time tho, she doesn't dismiss zoltraak. I think the reason she doesn't use it against herself much is because she herself doesn't have as much practice with it yet, compared to the other spells.
      If she can "defend against them without thinking", youd assume this also goes for casting them.
      Also when frieren shows "her opening" and actually gets injured by her clone, the spell thats uses is the original zoltraak. With the same black colour as Qual's.

    Serie refused to lead Flamme's magic school and work for the emperor. She instead founded her own international organization that stands above the empire and its imperial mages.
    Now she can fulfill both Flamme's wish to teach magic to humans and her own values of keeping magic for the worthy.

      All after spending about 1000 years sulking that Flamme asked her to do that.

    • @jmhaces
      @jmhaces หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      She put off her decision to honor Flamme's request for 1,000 years just like she told Frieren, and despite having already said she refused. She just needed to find a way to do it that didn't compromise her own principles about who she would or would not teach. And she did.

    I love how people react to this episode, the display of power that Frieren shows when fighting her copy, but can we talk about how both Frieren and her copy vaporize a boulder the size of a house falling on them with Volzanbel? That spell is just for casting a flame. How much mana and force did that flame have behind it to destroy that boulder?

    • @Ryodraco
      @Ryodraco หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I forget what the spell's name specifically translates to, but I'm pretty sure it's no normal flame, more like a supreme fire of some sort.

    I see people not happy with the exam arc, because it does not fit the show' pace so far. But this arc provides so much - from character development to world building and further understanding of the magic system. Also it has something Jungian about Frieren facing her shadow - incorporate the shadow to become more complete person.
    Also there is comparison between how demons works together (system based on power) and how humans do it (by sharing weaknesses to overcome challenges).

    • @benagon

      I haven't seen anybody disliking the Exam arc after they have seen it

    • @bobislav85
      @bobislav85 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@benagon There are such claiming either this arc does not fit the ideas in the show, or the change of pace, or that it was too long. For me this arc is perfectly fitting. Whatever this show does it always stay in tune with the themes it represented throughout the whole show. Just adding extra layer or PoV on those themes.

    I love that line about how Fern can fire off Zoltraak without thinking. My side job is teaching Microsoft Office at an Adult Education Center. Older generations who were born before home computing was a thing have to remember basic Operating System paradigms like folders and file systems in order to do things like drag and drop files. They have to think and then do it. It's almost reflex for folks who grew up with that as a child.

    Manga readers, the fight with the Frieren replica, did it have that odd cut the way they ended off episode 25 going into 26 or was that fight just straight through? Watching it going into episode 26 felt like more that took place before Fern shot that first shot.

    • @DarwinAwardWinner
      @DarwinAwardWinner หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The anime follows the manga exactly here. Fern's attack is the end of Chapter 53, and Chapter 54 picks right back up with the immediate aftermath of that shot, just like the next episode of the anime.

    0:20 I like that they consider the option of all going in together and discard it because, yeah, they'd win, but the Frieren clone would absolutely kill a bunch of them first.

    aside the visuals being that great, i love the flashback so much. Serie casually talking about the dawn of humanity as something she witnessed, puttin her in the tens of thousand of years.
    Also in the end she decided to comply with Flamme's request (after thinking for a thousand years like she said in the flashback), she became the head of the continental magic association, even tho she's still only teaching people with talent, cause talent is indeed a requirement.
    Being a mage with no talent will probably lead to an early death as well, as you would lack the necessary skills and power to face demons and monsters, and Serie knew that not many humans actually have this power, so she only teaches a select few, that have the chance to become great mages.
    Turns out that such a powerful being with such a long life has a pretty good insight on what to do, at least if we're talking about magic related topics.
    Also i loved that Serie talked about how Frieren could die, but said nothing about how she could die, which makes me think she can't even imagine her own death, as expected honestly.

    I love this episode with Serie and seeing what Frieren can actually do. I think Frieren you could see Frieren's love of magic returning with the prosspects of new spells to discover. And I don't think Serie isn't bothered by Flamme's death as she's trying to convince herself with the "She's only a student I decided to teach on a whim"... yeah right. You're hurting girl.... Still... would have liked to have seen them push a mimic into the room to see what would happen....
