    This is a time-lapse video showing us construct the rammed earth walls of the Young Allen Homestead. it switches to a few different angle to show the different walls being built. You can see how we build the wall sections above the windows and doors.

    i Priced this type of construction, pricing was about the same as a conventional
    home, one of the things that made it that EXPENSIVE was the concrete footings for the walls, the constructed weight of the home was estimated to be about 80 tonnes which meant the footings needed to be about double the size normally required. My land was a lot of clay in the soil, so it moved a lot between the dry months and wet months, a sandy plot would have been cheaper for the footings. finished cost $120k 300m2

      friend One , will last 10 times longer than a conventional home and the savings in heating and cooling cost will make up for the cost of the footing .

      $120k for 3200 SF is about a 3rd of the price of conventional building...way cheaper?? I assisted on a rammed earth build in GA and their 2800 SF all off grid, all major upgraded home cost less than $120K to build. All of their windows and doors were upgraded, most expensive windows and doors available from a commercial glazing company. Then, the owner, whom is an environmental engineer and never built so much as a bench before built a matching workshop perfectly, months later, just him and 2 friends. Anyone can do this and its far less expensive.

    Hi! Does it need curing after casting like, as we do in concrete?
    What is the maximum and minimum height you fills on the mould before ramming for each layer?
    And what is ideal height of that layer you prefers after compacting? (Ratio of intial height to final height)

    Please describe the forms: DIY or purchased, size and style, clamping or bolts? how did you run utilities within these walls? Did you run water pipes, power, gas in from above? How deep was your foundation footings and concrete PSI? Very nicely done!!

    I noticed that you are building the walls as SRE columns in one go and then coming back to fill in the sills and lintels. How do you ensure an adequate bond between the previously built column and the new SRE sills and lintels? Is there any potential issue with cracking or movement at these locations? Would this be a potential weak point for air/water leakage if it was to move or crack?

    • @ErikPukinskis
      @ErikPukinskis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The lintels are tied to the walls with what looks like a steel bond beam. I think in many cases they also pour a concrete top plate around the entire perimeter of the house. At the base all of the sections are tied to the concrete footing, so the walls are tied together at the top and bottom. I would expect when you ram a new wall next to an existing one however, you get pretty good adhesion. Try to rub two pieces of sand paper together, it's very difficult.

      @@ErikPukinskis I’m curious to know what mixture they are using here for their rammed earth

    • @scottghost1
      @scottghost1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The material is 14mm to dust road base that is blended with approx 10% off white cement.
      There is no bond beam. The lintels over openings are epoxy chemset to each panel with pins bearing approx 200mm into each panel. Smaller opening to 1.4m in length can be cast insitu using internal Reo bars as the lintel.

    @EarthStructures Couple questions: how many square feet (or meters) was this home and how many days to erect these walls? I'm building an off-grid rammed earth home at about 3200 sqft of area with perimeter and central load-bearing SIRE walls.

    how about the walls? are they element proof or do you need to coat them with something for the rain. Where I am considering this (tropical Africa +- 2 deg lattitude weather changes from Very Hot during the day to very Cold at night. from Very Rainy during the monsoon to very dry during December. Just wondering how a soil structure will fare.

    • @tt55k
      @tt55k 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Collins Areba they are just like stone , the best way is to use crushed limestone in the mix with the earth and cement. There are structures in Italy over 1000 years old still standing with this method.
