This food forest will live on long past any of us and stand as a memorial to the man your father was and the times that you shared. That, my friend, is a beautiful thing.
I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Got choked up a couple times just thinking of all the memories and quality time it sounds like you've had in the garden with dad. You can hear it in your voice: the excitement of the soil, and digging into the layers of it - like poking a hole and grabbing back to a time when your dad cut back, and created each of those layers. The gentle touch on the mosaic tiles. Love the idea of a food forest, and sending love your way from Tampa as you and your mom go through the unexpected loss of your father. Loss is hard. Abrupt loss in harder. Enjoy your dad's garden today 🌸 He's right there with you today.
Wow! Hard to believe that Food Forest is only 6 years old! Your Dad was a cool guy...not only letting you plant a Food Forest...but jumping in like he did...looking after it and mulching and all. I Love that its all edible and beautiful too! Great Tribute to your Dad...thanks for showing us that. Cate
And so we all learn where David the good got his passion. I got my gardening passion from my mother and when she passed due to cancer .my busy omni directional life took a turn and all i wanted was "Garden Therapy " as my mom called it . So work became far less important than weeding ,planting and building planting beds.
So glad you are back with us mate, your dad sounds like a wonderful man. I hope you, Rachel and the kids are doing well, please give our regards to your mum and family, We are here for you if you need us. You are all in our thoughts, vicariously yours Anna and Fred from Evesham, England. :)
David I lived in Ft.Lauderdale back in the '60s after I got out of the service. I can remember going down to the beach across from the Jolly Roger Hotel. Drove a RedTop Cab playing the Airport WOW Those were the days!!!! I was there when the Dallas Cowboys flew in and played the Miami Dolphins~(17 and 0)~~~ for GOD's sake Those Were Really the Days I enjoyed those years ago ;-)
Yeah, it has changed a lot. There are still bits and pieces with that vintage feel. I like to hit Dania and Hollywood to feel like I've gone back in time.
Nice video David. Im sorry for the loss of your dad. He certainly taught his son a way of life to be proud of. Such a great little food forest, I could live back there happily!! Enjoy your time there and my positive thoughts are with you and your family. I enjoyed your book "Push the Zone". Took lots of notes, much to my hubbies frustration of me adding more to the honey-do list..haha
Thank you so much for sharing your parents place again. It was so nice to see how things have grown and to enjoy what you created with your dear Dad. Garden's hold so many wonderful memories.
Wonderful food forest David. There is a lot of you in the forest. You and your father are leaving a legacy for the future family . Your family to come will enjoy this forest for a long time. I too enjoy all that my father gave me and it lives on in what I am doing in my gardens. Thank you for all that you have shared with me to build on my legacy to future gardeners. Sheila
What a wonderful representation of your Father. It's beautiful and I'm sure it will allow your Mom to have some peace in her life. Reflecting on the times you all worked together to make this beautiful forest could comfort you all. I'm so happy that you have this.
You and your dad made an awesome food forest. I honor you and your dad David ! Blessings2Yall... thumbs up. Great memories !!! ENJOY... THE SIMPLE LIFE
Deepest heartfelt condolences for you and your families loss.. beautiful forest is a fine testament. All the wonderful times and memories yall shared. What a PRICELESS GIFT
Thank you for sharing this! Very touching, as I grew up in the western side of Ft. Lauderdale, close to the New River Canal. We could never get our orange tree to grow much while I was growing up there. But we could smell the orange blossoms from Davie. After I moved out my Dad started growing low quats and they produced very well! Thanks for the memories of the sandy soil!
From a typical dismal, boring stark lawn to a gorgeous place to be. Very inspiring as I try to do the same in Far North California. WOW--such a tiny yard, I'm always wanting more with 1/2 acre. Well done.
David; if your still here in Florida we would love to have you guys come over. You both did a great job there; great family history.Thank you for sharing. We have 10 acres in Center Hill, Fl. and have lots of weak open sand to play in. Please consider drive by. (Central Fl style. not SoFL style)
What a great food forest.Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. Seems like you have alot of great memories there. Many blessings to you and your family. Happy gardening!,
What a beautiful backyard... food and fond memories...thank you for sharing. I am living in Florida and seeing this gave me some ideas of what to plant soon ...including yams! ;)
Hi Dave! Been following you for a while. I love seeing the possibilities for what I can do in my yard down here when it's so easy to get discouraged by all the cool things the temperate gardeners are up to. I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I wish we lived in a better world where I could offer you and mom help since I live in the area without being seen as a probable ax murderer. As it stands, I hope your family and church family are rallying around you now and putting the light around you. Wishing you comfort and peace.
Cool stuff man. Really enjoyed the video. Ive been trying to get something going like this in my yard. This inspired me to step up my efforts. Thanks. Keep putting out cool vids like this.
Sorry to hear about your dad. I got my passion from my father in San Diego county, but I live in Fort Lauderdale now. Wow! I had to relearn and rethink gardening here! I've adopted methods from Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening, and several organic TH-camrs. That yam...I didn't know that was any kind of yam, but grows wild around here.
I grew up in Florida and our soil was greatBut my mother was a big believer in compost. We grew things that are just coming to the stores, she not only did your chop and drop but didn’t call it that. We had chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs so we had lots of fertilizer. We also lived on a river so we had the benefit of the fish.
What a great legacy. Your climate is much like where I used to live. We can grow (and have grown) trees and shrubs like that. I LOVE star fruit (5 corner fruit) /carambola, and Black Sapote, and Avocado.
I love it man! I'm excited to really launch into my own food forest. I've only gotten a couple small trees now. A guava, kumquat, dwarf banana and a couple miracle berry bushes. I live in central Florida so I find your videos very useful!
Wow David. I'm so sorry you lost your father. I know this isn't a current video now but it rocked me to learn this. My heart goes out to you and your family. I wonder how the place looks now after Irma struck a month after you shot the video? I'm on the other side (Ft Myers) and things are coming back strong after that nasty storm.
Thank you. It was tough. It's still tough. Makes for a hard Father's Day. We were very close. Irma knocked down the cherry tree out front as well as damaged multiple other plants. My brother-in-law cut the cherry tree down short and propped it back up at my recommendation and it regrew.
I lost one of my mango saplings and a young Barbados cherry got knocked over. I righted it and braced it with an old car battery for several months. It looked pretty rough all the way until recently when the rainy season kicked in. Then suddenly the tree snapped out of it's funk and put out a big flush of cherries. The biggest so far. My chocolate lab was thrilled since I planted the tree for her.
Hi Dave! I wonder if you'd like to show it around? I'm in Fort Lauderdale for the next three weeks, and am KEEN to see your project, and hear your thoughts and experiences. I've only dealt with temperate climate forest gardening, so this is all new for me.
I would if I could - however, I'm a thousand miles away. While you're down there, though, you should check out Spyke's Grove nursery if you get a chance. Tell them David the Good sent you.
This is awesome. I've been trying to figure out how to and what to plant.. I thought a small food forest would be fun. I have a side yard, about 20 by 50 foot I can use. Trying not to over think it but I don't know where to start
Thanks for watching.
