    Very informative. I got a bunch of red, white, and pink poinsettias at the garden center. I’m trying to learn how to keep them alive for years. I also propagated some stems to make more plants! ❤️

    Great information - particularly about waiting until the soil is on the drier side ! Also mentioning that you left the few small ones to be pruned later if needed. I have one that is about 3 years old and become very leggy, did not know about pruning them. Once it has dried somewhat(just watered) then a hair-cut is in the future !

    Thank you so much for this!
    I kind of have slight serial killer tendency when it comes to plants, apart from with poinsettias!
    I've had my one for about 18 months now and tbh, it's not had an easy start! (Last year I spent quite a while in hospital; when I came home my pride and joy was literally 3 twigs!) No idea how, but it's grown like crazy! So many new stems and leaves but unfortunately, it has not flowered since. I'm quite nervous about cutting it back and I'm not sure if it needs repotting- after so long, there can't be much goodness in the soil now. If you don't mind being my poinsettia guru, any advice would be much appreciated! I haven't fertilised it at all, btw. I think it's quite happy and growing so well that Sod's law springs to mind, where the minute I try and fiddle around with it....!!
    Oh, also is it usual for some of the leaves to have a mottled effect, while other leaves are a different shape?? (Not necessarily both on the same leaves ).
    Any advice would be great, but if you're too busy or anything then no worries.
    Anyhoo, thanks again x

    I was given a poinsettia at work yesterday and this video helped me understand them a little better. All of my experience with plants has been only with succulents, cactus, and pothos. I hope I can keep this new plant alive.

      They can be a little tricky, the main problem is if they have had a period of cold during transport then there is nothing you can do to keep it alive, you will know it has cold shock as it will start dropping leaves straight away. But if it survives two weeks without dropping too many leaves then you should be able to grow it for several years following the instructions on this video.

      It's been losing little leaves near the base, which I'm thinking is normal. They just kinda turn yellow, curl up, and die. Not sure what might be causing that. It's still green overall, though some of the leaves that were damaged because big box store are starting to turn a little brown. I'm really hesitant to start a hard pruning until I see some kind of growth, though.

      I'm already seeing new growth at the leaf nodes on the stems, but I'll wait to prune it until maybe March. Migardener's video says they really like to be in large pots because their roots grow fast. After repotting it into a larger container, I can see that now it's really liking its new situation. One week between waterings and the soil is already bone dry.

      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      + bonnie hancock Yes, it certainly does, but I have no space on my windowsills for a bigger pot, so I shall prune the stems, roots and replace some of the compost so that it can continue to grow in the small pot.

    My poinsettia has no red or black leaves (only green)... but it's blooming...in April... I can't find anything that explains why. Its leaves started to turn red near the fall, but never actually got too far and remained mostly green; besides that they were never red...
    I'm trying to find a video to see the flowering in-process but can't find any, so I have no idea if the stamens turning black before the flower physically appearing is normal.
    I'm just. So confused. Why is it flowering in April? It must be happy if it's flowering but I don't understand why it's doing it now.

    hey I have a Standard pointsettia and wondering how to prune it back.....I don't want to cut the main sure but the side shots so it can grow taller......any tips ?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If its a standard Poinsettia it should have a large clear stem lower down which then branches towards the top. If you want it to grow taller cut off the lowest branches and any branches which grow sideways. It won't grow much over winter, but come spring it will start to grow. If you want it bushier cut the top inch off the plant, but no more so that it does not reduce the height too much.

      Thanks so much !!! I seen somebody getting ready to throw it out and I never seen one like that before so I took it home......can't wait to prune and report it for next Christmas :)

      I water it thoroughly as soon as I notice it's dry, that is when the top layer is dry. I water it thoroughly, so that water starts to leak under the pot, and then I spill the excess water. I water it like this approximately every seven days in its active period (in winter). That's just what I do.

    what side of th house should you plant a poinsetti
    north south east or west

    • @courtneyp.simpson8332
      @courtneyp.simpson8332 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      South if you can so it gets sun all day. But if it's summer I like to set it outside! That's when mine flourished. It got about 3-4 hours of sunlight a day

      I pruned mine with small leaves because the stems were SO long, I didn't want it getting lanky. Now it's FULL of life. So happy I did cut it back

    Can the poinsettia plant be repotted without pruning overgrown leaves?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes it can if you want the plant to continue growing larger. In fact you can even grow them into small trees if you have the space.

    all the flowers and leaves dried up and fell off. I have small red shoots left! I'm assuming it's dead!

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might not be, If the stems are green then cut it back hard and see if any new growth appears, if the stems have gone brown then unfortunately its probably dead.
