- Full video of my experience at Red Rock Canyon Ice Box Trail. Driving home from work to see how nice and beautiful the morning was. I just needed to go and I was also expecting a flash flood so I was rushing there walking and jogging as fast as I could to get to the spot where the waterfall is. When I saw all that water flowing down I really was scared for my life and was really wondering what will be my fate. I also help 2 young girls cross the high flowing water and followed me back to the road to get back home. I'm glad it wasn't really bad and it was just a small flash flood. But I would definitely do it again. It was one of a kind experience.
As a Southwesterner who has watched flash floods roaring down canyons where the water got very deep very fast, I implore folks watching this video to be very thorough in your planning before you consider going into slot canyons or canyons much wider than the canyon shown in this video. On one occasion I safely watched a flash flood roaring down a canyon that was much wider than the canyon shown in this video. The water got very deep & was flowing very fast. From where I was standing I could hear rumbling sounds coming from the canyon. The rumbling sounds must have been boulders rolling & hitting each other. During the height of the flood the boulders weren’t visible. The power of water to roll boulders & carve canyons has the power to quickly wipe out human lives.
That's a crazy experience! They are powerful indeed. That's one reason why I was terrified but then realized that was the worst of it.

As I mentioned before, during a flash flood I heard rumbling sounds that must have been boulders rolling & hitting each other, but I’ve never seen any flash flood that was moving boulders like the large amount being swept along by that flash flood in Pakistan.

@@LoneTinaja It's not a flash flood where I observed massive boulders rearranged in the Yuba River along hwy49. I lived in that area in the 1970's. I returned in the 1990's where a favorite swimming area no longer exists. That stretch of the river was completely rearranged. Huge boulders were moved. The natural rock 'slides' (like a swimming pool slide) were no where to be found. The calmer waters are now crashing rough waters. A mind blowing rearrangement!
@Nancy Smith - it would seem to me that a massive flash flood would be the most likely cause of the rearrangement. Are you sure that there wasn’t 1 or more flash floods during the years you weren’t there? Do you know if the area was struck by an earthquake during those years?
Pro tip: If you need to pan your camera up to film the approaching flood. You are in fact NOT in a safe place!
You can start to see how some of that geology has been carved into the landscape by eons of rainstorms and water flowing. Amazing.
I was more focused on the fact it takes one storm to actually change the landscape.

I was scared for you. It was amazing when the water first went over the fall. You could hear the rumbling and there it was! Incredible seeing that. Glad you were high enough not to get caught in it.
I"m part of a family of forest rangers in the Southwest. Over several decades, we have hauled too many bodies out of the muck and mud, or looked in vain for others after a flood. all it takes is a fallen tree to be launched like a 3-ton spear down the canyon and that's all she wrote. It is powerful and inspiring. If you want to record these get ABOVE where the water starts its fall, and drop a drone down into the canyon to film. Water becomes shallow when it is moving at speed, but also acts like a relentless chaotic battering ram. few people drown in these situations, most are beaten to death. You were wisely planted--unless a tree had come by. be careful, plan ahead and get a drone.

Good reason why I was incredibly scared this is once in a lifetime catching this on camera. I'm glad the rain wasn't massive like it could have been.
I revisited the trail and there was a massive amount of fresh logs that I had never seen before throughout the trail.
Proof of it could have been life-threatening on a higher scale.

As a family of Rangers and Sheriffs, we seem to be somehow "born to the task" and it's a task that is pretty scary - after all, the individual you are trying to rescue or recover just got injured or killed doing what you are doing to rescue them, plus there's the extra equipment. Even so, the rescues largely compensate for the recoveries, though it is sad that people really don't get Nature's power until its become deadly.
Anyway, I"m long retired from that and it's a pleasure to walk a trail without a radio or gear! //

Great footage, do note the water marks above your position though, and the overhanging erosion.. water does at times get high enough that that ledge you're on gets submerged. Glad you made it out safe .

I'm glad you showed this video. All flash floods have the sudden massive issue. Your statement that it's more impressive in person is good to share. In person you can feel the power of the water and it's dangerous nature. I experienced a lifetime impression of flash floods when I was 8 years old. My father waited to drive through on Hwy 395 near Bishop. When we finally did there were many cars completely covered with water stuck in the ditch. Some spots, where water had receded, I saw people, dead people. Very sad. Flash floods are not new to the desert. We all need to respect nature. Even trust nature. However, like a sudden flash flood, climate change is scary because we don't know what she is up to.

An exceptionally beautiful place: those multi coloured towering walls of folded, swirled rock, the trees, bushes, and flowering plants clinging to edges or rising up between boulders.
And the boulders - very beautiful, but when you realize they were put in place by immense water power tossing them, it is very frightening.

I have always lived around the huge cities of the world and have so so little understanding of how the environment behaves in wilder settings. I find watching videos such as this simply fascinating and entrancing. Also very educational - it isn't the sort of thing that would see much coverage in news reports on television - even very good news stations such as there are in London. So TH-cam - and people who make and post such recordings -has ended up being a way for me to see so much and learn so much that I would otherwise never had had the opportunity.
What makes these canyons truly stunning, is the amazing topography sculpted into their sides by the laminar and turbulent flow of water. Some are phenomenal works of natural art.
@@skateboardingjesus4006 Yes, just stunning. Though I'll never see it first hand, in many ways I think it is better that I appreciate such places via amazing modern technology. Because were I, and millions & millions me like me, to visit in person the places would end up so compromised and degraded by such large amount of human traffic. I'm sure things are lost by remote appreciation, but what is preserved is more important.
@@greenman6141 I'm in Ireland, so I don't get to see this exact kind of canyon. Places like that definitely need to have the amount of human traffic going through them limited. I should get a chance to see one or two when I visit Nevada next summer. Some people just don't see the irony of trampling through the natural beauty they insist on seeing.

I'm in Massachusetts in the US currently...was in London for decades before this. And London can handle its tourists, especially as so many are strictly interested in things that exist JUST for tourism's sake. I mean...the Hard Rock Cafe? Really? But, I realized, better that than vulnerable natural areas.
An American friend of mine who travelled about the UK & Ireland said to me that there were so so many Americans chewing gum everywhere in Ireland that he was relieved when he got to Scotland. Because while the Americans in Ireland were driving the Irish crazy, the Scottish reserved all their loathing for the English, so he felt less of an imposition.

I've done this hike several times when I lived there. It is an incredible place.
I know when I was working as a driver in Northern Maine and Coastal Canada the only thing that I saw that kinda freaked me out was the ice flows in spring, on the logging roads they had what basically where pop out bridges that where made to come out so the ice wouldn’t destroy the bridges, but something like these flash floods in the southwest are scary !! The awesome power that nature and water have is incredible ! Hope everyone was okay and I hear on the news that someone died in a flash flood I now can see how !! Incredible footage !!

It was pretty crazy. I thought more water would come down, but that was all of it, and I overreacted, but now that I know flash floods, I feel I would make a better video next time.
You mentioned getting in the water, but for the debris. If you got in that water you'd be immediately swept away and bashed-around like a rag doll all down through that canyon, and end-up as debris yourself. For the love of God, never try to climb down into, nor walk through, rapids like that. It'd be a suicidal move. - When having those temptations, "Turn around, don't down!" as we say.
That first part is, like you said is very unsafe, and that was in my mind until when we reached farther out of the trail, there were a lot of shallow parts we went in, and it was lovely. But yes, it's undoubtedly life-threatening in situations like you've mentioned. Thank you for the comment!

Yes, it was the reason why I felt so afraid because in my head it played out a lot worse I felt like a exponential amount of water has going to fall, but I was lucky that it was all it was.

I'm glad you liked it. I do recognize what I need to improve when recording this phenomenon, but I'm so happy you enjoyed what I was able to capture. As for the subs, they are fantastic, of course, to see this channel grow, but it's stressful thinking about what I should upload or if I should go looking for more natural phenomenons. Just over 30 years ago, before there was a TH-cam I hiked one of the slot canyons in Zion. I recall going a few miles into it where the walls on both sides went straight up with that curvy water carved smoothness, no rocks or ledges, like a fantasy image with only slivers of sky visible. I had been told that rain from far away that you can't detect can suddenly fill such places, and there would be no escape from where I stood. Decided not to push my luck and hiked back out. It was a dry day ☀☺ After viewing many videos like this, I believe that will be my only slot canyon hike.
Wow! That sounds amazing! So are you saying keeping an eye on the weather might still be risky to go through the slots? I want to put more time into hiking and make higher-quality videos.
Red Rock was my dad's CB radio handle, rockhounds going to crazy distance places in CA NV UT AZ ID OR WA to dig for rocks.
You might have been in more danger than you realize, glad the gals and you made it safe but those rocks are slippery and you can't know if they've been undermined from water.

It was a fantastic experience. Can you believe a user harassed me because they said this was normal? It came to the point where I had to block them.
@@OutdoorVegas I really think being harassed over anything is immature. Flash floods in that desert are common (normal). Warnings have been out there during my lifetime of 60yrs. They have been there since the known beginning (Native American lore). You did an excellent job recording this awesome video. You initially set up on relatively safe ground sharing the potential danger due to the high rise of the waters. You stayed aware. You shared the awesome power of the waters. You moved when necessary again showing the dangerous aspects of these flood waters. I liked your end meeting others as it showed that there are other observers who respect nature by staying far enough back. Stay alive to share the stories! I love a good story.
I went hiking in that trail when I was younger, you get to do fun stuff like that when you grow up in the valley. The closest I ever got to experiencing a flash flood was the exhibit at the Springs Preserve 😂
It does feel like once in a lifetime experience here in the valley. Now that I know it's not so horrible, I feel like if I encounter on here again, I'll be more disciplined.
That was scary. Hats off to the kids for remaining calm and supporting each other, this could have turned out very differently.
Basically a safe place to stand is where there is old growth. And the rocks aren't smooth.

I was scared to and im watching from my bed, all tucked in warm. The force of the water was astonishing , it cam out of nowhere and suddenly your high ground doesnt look so hi. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience 🙏 😊

A few years ago I was there and if it wasn’t because of someone that took me out of the water I wouldn’t of made it. It’s so scary and unexpected for sure

As far as survival goes, a fall from that height at the beginning would be curtains with or without the water. The water is just naturally scarier because it's loud.

I remember when that group of elderly got caught in that flash flood s. Utah and the cadaver dogs found their bodies buried in 6ft of mud miles down stream. So much power, when hiking look at long range weather 20 or 30 miles out to avoid trouble. Awesome video. Be safe

Survives a flash flood, then on way out DIES TRIPPING ON UNTIED FREAKING SHOELACE.
It's crazy how many people I used to see out there, casually strolling through the wilderness zone, miles from anybody else, let alone cell signal, in their yoga pants/shorts and t-shirt, carrying a stupid 20oz bottle of Evian.
Every time we went out, wife always asked me why I rarely touched my camelbak reservoir and carried separate water. Then one day we took a wrong turn which turned out to be a much, much longer trail than we'd intended to get back to the car. Toward the end of the day, with our main water pretty much gone, I was able to refill her pack and keep us both safely hydrated until we made the car again. "That's why, honey." Being prepared probably saved us, but that small gap could have ended us. I learned to ensure we had a GPS map of the area before we had any more adventures.
I am all for everybody getting out there and experiencing the world, but for dog's sake could some of you just use a little common sense before loping jauntily off into No Man's Land? Do a little reading into where you're going, then over-prepare like hell! You're hiking Icebox Canyon which is KNOWN for that waterfall, and there's no way the weather that triggered that flood wasn't forecast with a decent probability. And tuck in yer damn laces or at least double-tie them! Lack of preparation is just begging for a potentially-permanent life lesson!

Watched the entire video. Fear and excitement of the unknown danger. Flash floods are scary. Didn’t know what they meant until i see it on a flash flood june 23 capitol reef video. This the 2nd flash flood video i have seen. Scary stuffs but exciting at the same time.

What a great catch. I'm out at RR all the time ridding my bike and often wondered what the canyon looks like. I have been out before during a flash flood though. I had to carry my bike across the road where this water goes. Thanks for the content.

@@OutdoorVegas It is a good time ridding the RR loop. It's a challenge every time with all of the climbing involved. With the pandemic it's been mostly too crowded to get out there and ride safely. But now that it's getting hot. I hope to be out there with the crowds thinning.

I used to go to Red Rock all the time with the wife and kids.
It would be handy if there was a signal developed such as blasting a hand-held air horn three times to warn of flooding coming. Or a referee’s whistle blasted three times. Something that carries better than voice..

Floods of 1983 you would have been washed away. If your familiar with Las Vegas, the water got soo high in the sloan wash that it covered the bridge on Charleston at Lamb- appx 30 + feet high and 100 feet wide... hectic! That was the last time the dam at Mead overflowed

Yes, it's the Ice Box Canyon. I'm too busy to go up there it's been a while. I got very lucky catching this I didn't expect anything this crazy. It has to be heavy directly on the mountains behind Ice Box.

How long did you have to wait for the water to recede enough to leave? My sister and I did that hike a couple years ago and it was bone dry. It’s cool to see it this way.
I probably waited for 1
15-20 minutes but it looked like it didn't recede much and I wanted to start making my way out before another storm rolled by.
I thought it would be safe in the area where the water wasn't deep and I feel after letting it flow for a bit we should be safe from debris but it's just my theory. Nothing dangerous happened just an amazing phenomena.
