    On a SAFN 49 (the forerunner to the FAL) rotating the gas lug 180 degrees cuts off gas flow to the piston making it possible to launch rifle grenades.I own a G series FN FAL model 50.00 (one of less than 2000 imported by Browning between 1959 and 1964.The gas system appears to be the same as the FN 49.My rifle came with a sniper scope and is in near excellent condition.I really love the was it shoots.

      Seems like it's some kind of auto face recognition and blur program. Notice how it blurs his face but not all the time, and random blurs appear at times like the algorithm is confusing some pattern in the frame as a face. If it is an auto face blur program, it doesn't work very well.

      wise decision, mate! You won't regret it. FALs are way underrated, in Europe at least they're completely forgotten, and being sold around AK price levels.
      Btw check out my FN FAL accuracy video, with Norma Jaktmatch FMJ this gun is 1,5 MoA/110 yards, iron sights.

    It is really very sad to know that a foreigner can have a legitimately Brazilian rifle (imbel), and a native Brazilian, cannot because of disarmament governments that destroy the military history of Brazil, finally we civilians are having access to parafal (imbel) ) here in Brazil..well I intend to join the Marine Corps, and your video cleared many doubts I had about the fal gas system, thank you very much for the video and for keeping and taking care of a symbol of the Brazilian soldier,greetings from Brazil. gas plug is loose on the front, I replaced the plug and same issue so i figure it was improperly machined OR just beat to shit not really sure. I was told to silver solder on the inside of the gas plug to counder it but that's not working at all.

    The setting of the Gas Regulator has nothing to do with the propellent Gas affecting the Bullet. The same amount of Propellent Gas escapes through the Gas Vent. The Gas Regulator allows more Gas to drive the Piston to the rear as the weapon gets dirty with burnt propellent. To fire a Rifle Grenade the Gas Plug is rotated 180 degrees blocking off all Propellent Gas escaping through the Gas Block and thus propelling the Grenade. In the British forces we fired the no 94 Energa Anti Tank Grenade

    • @BooDamnHoo
      @BooDamnHoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rockape252 True, though you can turn off the gas plug and all the gas will propel the bullet but the rifle will not cycle. It will behave as a single shot rifle that needs to be hand charged each time.

    A dude I work with brought an FAL to me for cleaning (gas tube was full of grease!) with 11 gas settings. It ejects the same on setting 1 as it does on setting 11. Anyone?

    • @rm5902
      @rm5902 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep setting at th setting allowing the most gas to eject the brass case, assuming a #1.
      By closing the port to the maximum, assuming #11, or beyond the minimum causes undue wear and stress to the receiver. Your beating your receiver to a pulp.
      You can insert a poly tecoil block to help reduce wear to the receiver.

    • @latigomorgan
      @latigomorgan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had some old (1963) Spanish surplus ammo. The FAL would not eject it no matter what the gas setting. I figure the powder must have degraded. The primers were all fine, though. So, I bought a collet puller and pulled the bullets on 500 rounds of ammo, then reloaded them with fresh powder and they worked fine after that.

    Most of the videos in the torture test rarely happens in actual combat, except for the water test, which are expected during river crossings, and during heavy downpour in open terrain or in the jungle. And I admire the F A L's endurance; it could still fire in auto mode. Great gun indeed!

    • @stevetheduck1425
      @stevetheduck1425 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When shooting: Set gas at 5.
      Stoppage drill: rifles fires once then stops. Work charging handle.
      Rifles fires one or two shots and stops again.
      safety on, pull rifle down close to you, turn gas to 6 or 7.
      Carry on firing.
      Repeat if needed.
      Basically, gas at middle setting number for a start, then more gas if it doesn't reload.
      It depends on how hot, cold the day is, or how fouled the gas piston is.
      If this happens with full gas, survive, then get your rifle to an armourer, or clean it yourself.

  • @patrickcortez4471

    Bear of Sinai you do not remove the gas cylinder. You clean it with a fal cleaning kit. Or a regular cleaning rod with a patch attached to a cleaning jag. That is how I clean my fn fal gas cylinder when I am done shooting it.

    In my experience with the L1A1, setting the gas to mid range always worked. I'm not quite sure why you wouldn't use a really high setting other than perhaps more recoil and wear?
    Little mentioned is that the iron sights that move depending on how the weapon is held - due to the pivot. To be a good shot (I was a marksman) you need to learn how to hold the weapon consistently between shots.

    • @damarei
      @damarei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What? The front sight is timed to the receiver when the barrel is installed into the receiver. Unless the barrel itself is unscrewing from the receiver, there should be no movement of the front sight.

    • @minxythemerciless
      @minxythemerciless 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front-sight and barrel and receiver assembly move as one piece on the pivot. The rear sight is on the butt-stock assembly. There is some slop in the pivot so the two assemblies move depending on how you hold the weapon.

    • @damarei
      @damarei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy Ardley
      Ihhh, I misunderstood.
      I thought you were saying lateral movement of the front sight assembly was possible.
      While you may be technically correct, I think you're giving the tiny movements possible too much credit.
      We're talking about battle rifles that are capable of 3 NOW at best. That, combined with standing, offhand firing likely makes any vertical shift possible from the pivot more or less insignificant.

    • @minxythemerciless
      @minxythemerciless 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flex is a rotary motion around the barrel axis so more left/right and less up/down. I have shot this weapon with iron sights in top military marksmanship contests and I know precisely how the weapon moves under different grips and pressures. When firing prone at snap targets and at long distance fixed targets you will always get better/more consistent results if you hold it the same way. At 300m it is as much as 8 inches lateral mean impact point - i.e. outside of the V-Bull.

    • @damarei
      @damarei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy Ardley
      At 300 meters, you're going to get a 9 inch grouping, at best, with a 3MOA rifle.
      I have no doubt that you firmly believe that the wiggle in the pivot affects accuracy.
      Many people also falsely believe that poor upper to lower fit negatively affects accuracy in the stoner pattern rifles.
      It would be even more evident in the AR-15 if such issues were valid, as that rifle is capable of great precision, at times even under 1MOA.
      Furthermore, being a ring and post system, the post doesn't need to be stationary for the sighting system to function normally.
      cheers

    Ok I have to ask is there a reason why you just cant close gas tube to be sure that will cycle? And I just bought L1A1 and i set it to wide open (12 on the top) and it still works, I dont know if its wrong but it works.

    • @Sinaimedve007
      @Sinaimedve007  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      check if the gas collar was not screwed/put back the wrong (opposite) direction... if the hole is fully open, it could never cycle.

    • @73288
      @73288 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bear of Sinai Maybe it is because of ammo.That hole on the top is wide open and it still works, ill try a different ammo in the future to test this once more. And thank for reply.

    • @Sinaimedve007
      @Sinaimedve007  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      73288 so... something just doesn't add up here. If the gas port is open, i.e. the hole is there, visible, large, there is just no way that the rifle could cicle properly.
      Except for a WILDLY overloaded cartridge, but that would show and tell right away on the cases (ruptures, cracks e.g.).
      SO I would rather poke' around the:
      -gas plug (clean? no gunk in there? is the "A" sign on the top when reassemlbed)?
      -gas collar (is it properly adjusted)?
      -what happens if you go all the 14 clicks the other way?
      And yes, trying some other ammo is also a very good idea.
      Keep me posted, pls.

    I am using an ex irish army FN FAL, it ejects brass about 10meters and with m80 ball I cannot get a grouping less than 4 inches. Do you know why?

    • @Sinaimedve007
      @Sinaimedve007  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry mate, missed your question. The gas port is too closed, open it up a little bit, you are hammering the piston with unnecessary huge amount of gasses. This also might degrade your accuracy, as less gas is used to propek the bullet than the ideal qty.
      On the other hand, 4inch groups with a Fal are not tragical, especially with surplus ball ammo.
      Buy a couple boxes of other ammo types, e.g. hornady, prvi, saloerbellot etc., and trial and error experience will tell u, which ia the optimal one.
      Use steady conditions, e.g. sandbag, rifle support, shoot slow and calm, try.to cut out the human factor.
      My best group with Fal was 1.5 MoA, with Norma Jaktmatch ammo (bit pricey....)
      Have fun!

    Excellent video. After 20 years of faithfulness my FN stopped cycling. Come to find out the gas settings were off. Maybe moved the dial when cleaning. Also, I was using cheap Wolf ammo and when I went to Brass case is when it stopped cycling causing FTE. So, you recommend starting at 8 clicks away from the fully open gas port or is each gun different on the exact amount of closing off position of the gas port? Thank you again for this. Saved me money from gunsmith :)
