Apparently the reason these commercials are so violent is because Jim Henson hated coffee and said he would only drink it if someone held a gun to his head so he made that the concept for the Wilkins coffee commercials.
The worst one of all those commercials, has to be the one where Proto Kermit stabbed the guy but you don’t see it, he just wipes the blood off the blade while saying he should’ve taken the coffee. That was horrifying

TMNT was marketed to kids, is why he had problems. Back then, coffee was not thought of as something kid friendly. Henson had a lot of more grown-up humor going on that's often overlooked and gets his full career glossed over as child entertainment.
@@Optimalillusion ... Seriously? Coffee wasn't seen as something kids would drink? @PlushyToons 2 Studioz To be fair to Jim, this was clearly meant for comedic effect, and is a lot more slapstick than what you saw in the Turtles movie.
I think my favorite one has gotta be the one when Wilkins has Wontkins strapped to the electric chair. "You want some Wilkins Coffee?" "No." "How shocking." *Flips the switch.* 😂
Never gets old. Fact Wilkins in this commercial was NEVER a prototype for Kermit. Yes, Jim Henson created The Muppets at the time but these commercials were totally different from what Jim set out to do. Still, these commercials NEVER Get old.
From TV Tropes: Ironically, it was actually quite easy for Jim Henson to come up with the many ridiculous ways to punish Wontkins, because like Wontkins, Henson himself never liked Wilkins coffee, either - or coffee at all, for that matter. Thus, these commercials became a playful way for Henson to think of what it would take for him to drink coffee, and the answer was: a lot.
My love and respect for Jim Henson only increased after seeing these hilarious and absurdly violent commercials! My favorite is the Strawberry Shortcake and Kicking the guy out of the tree ones (especially your reactions to them)... LMAO!!!
Jesus, I had to pause it and come down to say that in the first one when he blew the guy away I laughed... then when he turned the cannon at us and asked us the same question I fucking lost it lol just like Martin. That was gold.
That's some dangerous ass coffee... LMAO 😂 lookatcha...I lost it when he hit my man in the face with the pie and poured coffee on him but I was dead when kicked his ass out that tree..hard too...
These are gold man I'm glad you guys decided to talk about these. Do more of these things try to find more videos of commercials that they'll never make these days and start commenting on them.
And I thought the 1980's commercials that promoted Violent Rated R toys to kids were wild. They had nothing on these Wilkins Coffee Ads. These were fantastic! Thank you for posting.
Now I want to see 'Proto Kermit' dressed as Neegan from "Walking Dead" ^_^ "You don't like Wilkin's Coffee? "Well, Well, Well, then I guess its time to put on your Pee Pee Pants now, isn't it?" ^_^
I actually heard of them about a video on creepy incarnations of children's characters or something like that and then went searching for the commercials themselves. Seems they suddenly went viral shortly after.
They needed to see this one Wilkins dressed as a fortune teller, and Wantkins sitting at a table with a crystal ball Wilkins: "I see you enjoying Wilkins coffee" Wantkins: "What about my future?" **BANG** Wilkins: "You don't have a future."
I hate how many people in the comments are attributing awareness of these ads to the Nostalgia Critic. These ads weren't exactly unknown before, and honestly I don't know why people still watch him.

I heard they filmed these commercials right here in DC so the violence in this commercial doesn’t surprise me that much but never realized how violent those commercials were. Funny AF though😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Apparently the reason these commercials are so violent is because Jim Henson hated coffee and said he would only drink it if someone held a gun to his head so he made that the concept for the Wilkins coffee commercials.
That and, since this was the early days of advertising, it was believed that the hard sell was the only way commercials would work.
What dafuq kinda person hates coffee??
@@masternoob9673 Plenty of them, myself included.
@@masternoob9673 I don't hate it it just doesn't do anything for me and I don't like it
I think Jim was also a fan of the three stooges.
"Ya can't say that you DON'T either!" Cue Martin's bust up laughter. Any DT fan knows Martin is a sucker for pastries to the face.
Pastries in the face and Word Play. It's like that specific one was made just for Martin 😂

"You drink Wilkins Coffee?"
"No! What about my future?"

"You dont HAVE a future :)"
"hey! This is Gotham, bad things happen if you don't drink the right coffee.."
I can imagine Wilkins Coffee being the Joker’s favorite advertisement.
Wow, Jim Henson once said that he regretted making the Ninja Turtles movie because it was too violent. How ironic.
Yeah, that one was too violent, but apparently "Muppet Saw" over here was perfectly fine for some reason
That's because he had gotten into Buddhism around the time the Ninja Turtles movie was being made.

Actually Kermit existed before the Wilkins Coffee commercials. He debuted for Sam and Friends back in 1955.
