God. I was so fortunate that my own grandfather made it home (very lucky he wasn't in Dunkirk). Very emotional for him. And then for him to play the very role his grandfather did years later!
It was very moving to see Leonard's name in stone because it made him real, tangible, and important. His sacrifice was not a trivial matter. It was absolutely worthy of remembrance. What a pity that Martin's father didn't know about that monument. It would have been great not only for him, but also to bring his boys.
It's amazing that he is at wenlock barracks which is in hull only for him to find his family had lived there previously. I passed these barracks daily for 3 years and probably about 3 times a week now. I always stare going passed as I wanted to become a medic for the army and wondered if I would be based there xxx
i just found this and realised i'm watching it on the 24th of May. . . talk about coincidences. . . it's so wonderful that Martin was able to find these records
So interesting! I first saw him in the role of every x-Army Dr John Watson. Wonder if he knew any of his predecessors doing medical work, before taking that role?
My Grandfather was a Stuka gunner in 3.StG 77 that participated in many sorties in this region before and during Dunkirk. So many sorties my Grandfather could not recount just one from the many, yet in Mr. Freeman's case one bomb was all it took to impact his ancestors.
Eric Stevens, too many young men on either side lost their lives carrying out the orders belligerent old men. I hope the surviving veterans found some measure of peace.
My Grandfather wished to have daughters and not sons after witnessing numerous air and battle campaigns. The loss of sons, brothers, and husbands during war and the countless casualties weighed on him after awhile. He beat the odds and survived the war in a very dangerous profession, and got his wish 2 daughters born in 1944 and 1949.
One of my acestors fell in the war in Russia against Napoleon. We still have the watch and a few letters that were sent from one of his friends. Totally fascinating!
... and when they left Dunkirk, it left France open to the German rushing in. The WWI Treaty among the Allies at that time was for the English and Dutch to guard the northern access to German, and the French the guard the entire eastern line. Once the Brits evacuated, the French couldn't move from their lines fast enough, and were caught in the back by the Germans.
it's so moving to see Martin Freeman almost in tears.
IKR!
Its sad.
yes. You want to give him a huge hug

he looks so vulnerable in here :( i love him sm and i hope he is well now.
Martin always super cute! I love him! I love him every single day! 😍😍💖💙💙🇬🇧
it's really ironic to see Martin playing the role of a doctor in Sherlock when his family had military field medics in it....the more you know....
Awesome! ;D
Martin is cool that way...
dean winchestette that is not ironic, its just a coincidence
dean winchestette You've misused the word "ironic". You mean to say "coincidental".
I was thinking at the same thing
Maybe it should be so
Wow, Leonard was a hero. Bless his soul.

Damn, Leonard Freeman, 150th Ambulance Corps., *DUNKIRK*
Martin's grandfather was a Medic. John Watson was a Doctor (Medic). Interesting,
Both army doctors
why am i watching this i should be doing homework
it's ALL AN EDUCATION ..... if the teacher complains ...make them watch it
🤣I am laughing because I AM a teacher and I SHOULD be grading right now
The lesson that should be learned here isn't that these people, relatives, were extraordinary, it's that the ordinary people lived the lives they did.

That's one hell of a sinus condition fella. Damn!
He looks like his grandfather
Anyone with an ancestor who fought and died fighting fascism should consider what they are doing to honour their relatives. Today more than ever.
Can you tell me where to go to fight it ?
So not the dpp then?
@Liverpool 11 That is the dumbest thing ever. Fascists are left wing and socialist.
@emma jones What are you talking about lol. Socialism is the greatest evil on this earth.

Anyone else find it interesting that Freeman’s grandfather was an army doctor, and he played an army doctor as an actor?
So Martin's great grandpa was also a doctor - soldier interesting
very brave to face all this info
He t looks like him. And then he played an army doctor in a war is such a coincidence...wow.
Why did it have a strange background on the name of his grandfather? Looks doctored. 2:20
You get that when you scan a document with highlighter on it.
@@classicambo9781 But you would also get it if you cut and literally pasted another name over it.
You can bet though that the field medics put everyone on boats that they could before themselves.
Ezo es ma antiguo que el anda pa lante

core? Corps
It's pronounced core
@@wanna-be-cowboy yes because it's french
Gripping.
Lol, 'core'... Come on. Corps. Are they still a TA outfit? I can't imagine being a 50 year-old Captain in the regulars. How embarrassing.
Love Martin Freeman. The guy he's talking to is a snake though
