Yeah and imagine, the guy sacrifice himself to save the earth, only to fucking know that: a) Abstergo used his body as a ginea pig and after they just toss it, b) his sacrifice was in vain because the world will end anyways in a few years, c) he has to stay in that place where he just become a Gulty Spark (kinda of a IA) and the last and worst of all... he has to stay with Layla *shivers* poor Desmond, just let him rest :(
Ubisoft doesn't want their flagship franchise to end just like that, which is why Layla has the same fate as Desmond.

Layla was the prophecised Eve and my theory is that this ending where its mentioned to look back before desmond made the choice of saving the world seems like there way of saying nothing between assassins creed 3 and now means anything we start from here from a new version of “ragnarok” and a new version of aita and juno (aleithia and Loki)

I like how this actually advances the story of AC a little bit. The story has hardly advanced at all since AC3.
Unfortunately. You're right. What has changed in the modern day since AC3? Literally nothing. Finally I feel like we're going somewhere now, after almost a decade
How did this one advance the story? The outcome is still the same as AC3. The main villain used the hero as a means to end a catastrophe while also releasing themselves as a future threat in the process. It’s the same thing that happened with Juno.
Advanced the plot? This game practically rehashed AC3's ending only somehow more anti-climatic. If anything, the story just reset itself back post AC3 and pre-AC 4 status quo.

Basim is foreshadowing William Miles' assassination by his hands; why else would he want a face-to-face meeting if he could simply just talk to him instantly via the computer that Shaun offered? He's a known traitor and is clearly up to no good, so he has the potential to be a new villain for the modern day part of the series; the new anti-assassin.
2. We know that the world is still being ravaged by the solar radiation since AC3. Before, after AC3, we thought it was all over, now we know it's slowly getting more serious. This now adds a sense of agency to the modern world of AC; the clock is ticking again.
3. Desmond could easily still be alive as the "Reader" character; it sounds like Nolan North is voicing him. Fitting that Layla ends(?) her story by his side.

It also shows us that the writers themselves are aware of the series' modern storyline being a problem since AC3. They're basically reminding everyone what happened at the end of AC3 in order to properly start the post-AC3 storyline again in the next game.
I legit can't tell what's the end goal here for the story anymore. It feels like every game since AC3 is just meandering around as an excuse to drag out the series rather than a specific goal that we should be working toward.
Yeah. The Desmond arc was good overall and concise, the random people was pretty much filler and the layla arc was pretty disjointed(ie it feels like we are missing a few steps of her journey at the start of Odyssey and Valhalla)

I think it started even earlier, in AC Brotherhood. I remember vividly thinking 'wait a minute, this is going nowhere, isn't it?'
It seems like a reboot for the modern-day where it's starting off again after AC3. I like it because nothing useful happened in the modern-day from AC3 to Odyssey. Now if Ubisoft can actually give writers creative freedom we can get a good modern-day arc again.
Damn so I reached the end. I expected a big battle with king Alfred before it ends . It seems like a huge unresolved issue with Alfred.

I genuinely thought this entire section was the midway point of the game while playing, turned out was the freaking end.. I enjoyed forging bonds, making new allies story wise, but it turned out so meaningless.. So much decent build up that got no pay off.
hence the questions- Which side will Bassim stay on? Can we see the same thing as in the assassin s creed revelations ? Can we see Leila and Desmond coming out of animus? The end is very similar to the end of assassin's creed brotherhood and in the beginning of assassin's creed revelations with Desmond and Clay . For me that is the penultimate game of assassin's creed , and the other may be the last. Wow!
Ok they FINALLY brought Desmond back even if it was in a tiny way just having the story advance from ac3 8 freaking years ago is good enough for me but if they want to appease fans they'll bring him back properly

It took 4 more games to get to it but Origins finally introduced the next main character that you now know as Layla.

More, He stated family. I wouldn't be surprised if he brought back Juno or a clone of her as well as new enemies like the comment above me stated. We'll see there is clearly way more lore towards the ISU that Ubi has yet to touch upon and since we are gonna be in the ancient past for a few more games i can see Ubi expanding on ISU big time.
@@pixelcount350 i only wish they did a game set entirely in the isu age, shaun did say in AC3 that they wanted to crank the animus all the way back some 80.000 years into the past but they had trouble doing it and later on in the comic when juno's clone body was killed (her mind perished with her body so i doubt she'll pull another "the gray" trick") otso berg vaporized the base and the clone body thus denying the assassins a chance to get her dna and use it for an animus session

What i just realised was Basim was found in the holy lands by sigurd so even if we know him as loki he could have another isu name all together he could be Aitas father
Perhaps the suggestion is that they're going to go back and change the ending of ACIII, which may be totally crowbarred but at least its admitting a fundamental flaw of the series since then
The events of AC to AC3 can't be retconned that way. Even if Desmond and Layla find a solution in one of those alternate realities, they can't implement it, as Desmond has already made his choice. They could easily make a game based on the alternate realities, but they would be meaningless as a way to fix what people dislike about these games. They'll have to please the fucks another way.
(Edit) It would only work if they can give 2012 Desmond a message from 2020 NOT to save the world, but that would either create a paradox or a new and seperate reality from the baseline reality, and it creates the possibility that anyone at anytime could just show up and say, "Wrong. Do this." There's also no stopping a Templar ally/ISU from doing the same, even making an appearance just to argue that their's is the right way. That doesn't sound fun. As of now, nothing they will find in those alternate realities will be applicable to the present day of AC after the events of Valhalla.

Man Ubisoft should bring Patrice Desilets back to end the franchise properly. Give him money, an apology and full creative freedom and we get finally a great AC game again.
Edit: for anyone defending Valhalla team. I don't have anything against them. They are competent and great, but AC is Patrice baby with Corey May and Jade Raymond and they have the right to end it imo

For me it's interesting that they really continued the ending of AC3 to this it's pretty awesome really.

@@mohammadsaleem5990 no, when the modern day had realistic potential and direct purposeful connections to the historical setting, ie looking for the apple in AC1, training desmond through the bleeding effect in AC2 and Brotherhood, using the temple in AC3. Not that there wasn't stuff to improve on as clearly there was much more that could have been done with the modern day.

Though the ending was only a rehash of the story in AC3, I really liked the twist they had at the end there. The game is called Valhalla, and Valhalla does exist, only as a simulation made by ISU that normal people can use to escape their sorrows. A nice sci-fi horror twist on the mythology right there. Also that machine looked like something straight out of Alien.

I think the machine tree is supposed to represent Yggdrasil. Eivor hanging from the tree could also represent Odin sacrificing himself to himself by hanging himself for nine days and nine nights to gain wisdom. If i had to write the Valhalla novel, I would have Eivor hang for nine minutes.

Yeah pretty much sums to: Layla and Desmond become the new Adam and Eve, they revive an assassin traitor from century's ago (and maybe in the next game he will betray the assassins...again) and perhaps we could get another protagonist in the next entry...great work Ubisoft!

Why does this Ending feel like a big F you to the player base, that actually cares about the Modern Day Story? First they kill off Juno...IN THE COMICS, and then they redo the ending of AC3 and introducing yet another villain, who is really just Juno but not really. Why not just end the Juno arc in the games and be done with it?! It's just milking at this point.

It's because they don't know what to do with the modern day. They lost their way after AC 3 and they are too pussies to just leave it. They don't understand that we don't need a moder day hero that goes into the Animus.

It's too late the mess they caused with Juno, so Darby and the other writers basically had to clean up the mess that was made in the comics and in Odyssey.

Having it end in a comic book pissed me off and i havent played since.
The bad news is, Basim/Loki lived. The good news is that Layla is gone. Game is fun though, I love playing a Norseman and going Viking. Can we get Japan or Rome next?
The hard thing about Rome is, Rome has already been introduced in Origins, while Bayek and Aya being identified as the founders of the Assassin, it does not really make sense to create something earlier than Augustus.
Plus, since AC likes to place themselves at the highest point of each civilization's history, that means the only choice they have is during the 5 Good Emperors. Which is not so different as a time period compared to Origins.
Japan is also difficult, because of 2 things.
1), Japan already has a very strong "hyper normal" representation in pop culture, Ninja and Samurai. Though figures like Himiko satisfy the Isu/piece of Eden idea almost perfectly, it will be extremely hard for Ubi to differentiate their assassin game from a Ninja/Samurai game. And if they screw up, they gonna be in huge trouble, because there are so many good representations of Japanese culture already.
2), Historically speaking, Japan has been the "small brother" for ancient China until the late 1800s/early 1900s, which make the "influence" part of the potential main character very hard to write, because Japan was mainly receiving those influences from China. Since AC does not change history, that means they can only place the story after 1900s, which is a time period Ubisoft won't dare to even just think about.

They did hire a good writer Darby mcdevvit who wrote revelations and black flag which both are amazing, and he made an incredible ending with basically showing Desmond and FINALLY making a good modern day story

So basically Basim is the new villain who we’re going to apparently control in the next game. Layla & Desmond consciousness trapped leaving the door open for their returns somehow. I’m more intrigued as to how Eivor got all the way to North America and how that ties to AC3? I’m still incredibly lost by it all, I feel like every game is a cliffhanger or a sort it’s winding me up now 😂
I’m hoping this is a way to continue the decent story arc of Desmond by altering the past so he didn’t die. Feels like Avengers Endgame to me.

AND BITCHED about how they HATED present day aspects of the games, with some even requesting that the developers and writers remove it from the story altogether. Now, all I ever see is people wanting it back as an important plot point or whining about how they think it should be. yes, this game has a linear story, still there are few minor changes in the ending which is based on our decisions
@@anguswalker2696 one of them is that Sigurd stays to seek a new life and Eivor becomes Jarl of Ravensthorpe. The other one is which you see in the video, where Sigurd returns to England with Eivor. I dont know if there is a third one or what happens there.

I remember when kjotve was our main enemy, simpler times man simpler times.
You know, i don't why everyone thinks basim is a bad guy, sure he's a trickster. But really all he wanted was to protect his family, and revenge against odin for destroying his family. Which ezio, and connor, both started out seeking revenge.
He also saved the world by leading Layla to evior, and lead her to desond.
Granted we'll still probably face off against him at something point, im excited to see where it goes.
Also that modern day scene with basim, and evior, where he accepts evior is evior, and not odin is pretty nice.
We need what’s left of the old crew back (Rebecca, Shaun and William) plus Elijah and Basim that would be so cool

Roman Isu Sage is the Aita clone every generation Aita will show up same memories and face
Greek Isu Sage they don't need it because of the Staff i guess? Memories of staff holders is now inside the staff thats why Layla need mood inhibitors while holding the staff.

I haven't been this excited about the overall story in AC since AC3. I hope they don't waste this potential although the words about a live service game make me worried.
I finished the game today and the only thing I've been able to focus on is this plus a few plotholes I kinda thought on.
1) Kassandra got used by Aletheia, her chance at a normal life was taken away and...shit, I know it's just a game and that I'm supposed to care about Eivor/Basim, but I don't and I just can't get over the fact that she was lied to, and ended up wasting herself on a not even remotely noble cause. Say what you will about Odyssey as a game, but maybe I'm one of the minorites who fell in love with it and saw it for the gem it was. And that's not even touching how Kassandra was a much needed breath of fresh air, a genuinely likeable protagonist.
2) Maybe this entire Assassin vs Templar conflict was created by Aletheia just so the staff would fall into the hands of Kassandra so Aletheia could make a fool out of to do her bidding, and to wait till layla appeared cos it'd have been hell if Aletheia had sent Kassandra to the life tree, she wouldn't have stayed in the illusion with desmond since all of this would have gone over her head, and probably killed basim.
This entire assassins and templars conflict is just a side effect of Aletheia's and Loki's larger goal. These separate creeds formed only due to the fact that perhaps in one of the thousand simulations Aletheia conducted, she came to know about layla and the only way to get in contact with her would have been an ideological conflict..
It's so damn confusing for someone who just started playing AC since syndicate like me lol. But I've played all of the games since then and I still don't know wtf happened in the end but it was good I guess. Got me good.

Something just occurred to me. How is Basim alive? Laylas body died within a few minutes of losing the staff due to the exposure to the radiation while Basim was soaking in that very same radiation for 8 years yet alone the thousand he spent hanging there
The staff brought him back to life. That’s why Layla initially thought that she would be fine until she realized it dropped on the floor.

Yeah, Layla dying was a complete afterthought lol. Literally somehow a worse depicted death for a protagonist than Desmond's.
Actually no, this kinda ties in with Adam and Eve thing (Well the new Adam and Eve story, they seem to have scrapped the original concept from AC1). Now we know Desmond is Adam and Layla is Eve that has been mentioned since AC2 when Desmond was told to find Eve after forcefully killing Lucy. Ending of AC Liberation also mentioned the search for Eve also.
Wrong on that last part , neither templars or Assasins can take down both isu Alone they need to work together
@@GabrielGarcia-xg3tb If we have Assassins actually willing to go against an Isu that "supporting" them, that's good too. Clean house just like the Templars such as Otso Berg did with the Instruments of the First Will and Juno. Still hope we play as Templars instead of Assassins however.

I came here to post the same comment that many others have already posted. So it's good to know I'm not the only one who was unaware that all of this was the end of the game. I couldn't figure out what to do next. Now I see there isn't anything else. This is the first time I finished an Assassin's Creed game and didn't even know I finished it. It felt so unrewarding. Such a fun and addicting game, then everything after the battle with Odin in Eivor's dream/vision was pretty much boring. Shame.
The only thing I haven't done was find all of the people of the order. And that's because I can't find them or figure it out. Now it feels pointless to even try.
After such an ending, I don't understand who will be the next main character...

Excuse me but why didn't Kassandra know what was going on wasn't she all-knowing by the end... Feel like she lived for all those years through the ages waiting for Layla... For absolutely fucking no reason.
She was fucking lied to and used by Aletheia, led by the promise of a noble cause being fulfilled as she watches over the templar-assassin conflict, making sure the balance never tipped.
It was all bullshit, just a fluke to buy time till layla appears, takes the staff from Kassandra, then basim sends out his message to her and voila, he comes back to life as layla gets trapped with desmond.
Man, I am just dying for them to bring desmond back. I wanna see him in advanced graphics lol

Wrong, Loki is Loki. Phanes is a different Isu. Fenrir is Loki's son, while Eve is Phanes' hybrid daughter. We do not know about Adam's family. The children he was talking about are Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel.

Wow. I actually finished the game without even realising it haha. I've only got the odd little side quest to do, but I've completed the main story. Took me 99 hours all told. I have tonnes of wealth still to collect though so you could probably add several hours to my time.

And having spent so much time in simulation, its not a great deal for him to infuse a thought in people's mind that he belongs to this era but it sure does not fit with the watchdogs timeline. These games lately aren't what Assassin's Creed used to be back in the day. This game just feels like an enhanced version of For Honor.
My exact thoughts when I saw the trailer for the first time. We have legit reached to a point where Assassin's creed looks more like for honor than for honor itself does
My guess? Too many writers have come and gone, so while the original story board and notes are still there, there isn't a singular vision to tell the main story right.

Yo and the epilogue confirms that Eivor's actions indirectly destroyed the order of ancients and gave birth to the Templar Order. It was an unexpected but welcome surprise
If u read one of the notes on the wall in layla's cabin, it talks about that the order of ancients become templars about a centure before the crusades and ac1, around 978 i believe, so yeah eivor set the chain of events into motion so to speak by wiping out many european order members
