This was common problem with the early D-13's ,so much that Volvo actually had a service program to drill through the lower timing cover/upper flywheel housing and into/through the spanner nut that sets the preload on the Double idler gear ( this of course if the nut hadn't already loosened up ) not sure what they supposedly changed on the later engines? I know many have asked "what is the torque on the nut? " they don't have a specification on it for field service, if the nut comes loose you have to replace the entire double idler gear and a boat load of other very expensive part's!! The dilemma is that there are no aftermarket parts for these things =you have to by then from "VOLVO " =GREEN GOLD!!! , there really isn't any aspect about these engines that is inexpensive or cheap to fix
What year range D13s have this issue? If looking at a used truck is there any way to tell if this has been fixed before or if it's going to fail soon? Once this is repaired is it a repeat problem every few hundred thousand miles or is there a permanent solution to it?
