Good ole NH 846. Had one for years. I think my record for one days baling was 123 bales. We had very little trouble with ours. Most of the trouble came from my neck hurting after looking back watching the twine arm. Always wondered if one of those cameras mounted in a good spot would have helped. I updated to auto tie 4'x5' It has a buzzer in cab. A 2 second buzz is full bale and the twinning cycle has begun. Just clutch. A quick glance around to make sure both twine leads have started. 20-25 seconds later. That's right, much quicker than you can twine a bale with the 846. A second beep. Another quick glance to check that both leads have been cut. Raise the gate. Then shut it. Your off again. No turning off PTO or throttling back. This saves a good 60 seconds over the 846. That's a hour per 60 bales. Plus the added bonus of 200-250 lbs more hay in each bale. That save more time and more twine. Another twine saving comes from the 4' wide bales. vs the almost 5' wide 846 bales. Just food for thought. Took me years to find another baler. All that I just sad is worthless if you have to invest too much in a trade.
Taking pride in accomplishing the work you do with real world well loved equipment shows some real,love for what you do! Everyone has a comfort level with how they portray themselves and I tend to like your appearance quite a bit !! Thanks for taking us along , are the chickens doing well in their new digs?
@G Manloh I run a 10 wheel Vermeer rake we rake and bale 1200 to 1400 acres depending on weather for price and speed you can't beat them we rake and bale 150 acres a day some days and you just can't hardly match that with a bar a dual bar maybe but they are quite expensive
We use wire on ours cause the splines are wore out & a replacement part is hard to get. Works good but we just have to watch out & not raise the rake too high or we risk breaking the wire. Farmers are resourceful when we have to be. 😁

as a farmer we have to be creative with the solutions to our breakdowns in the field. we have to try to beat the weather and small windows of dry weather to make hay.
Just curious, why not use the 84 hydro with its front loader and a spear alomg with a random 3pt implement for counter weight? I would say it would be nicer to use. You could likely use the forklift on the back to carry another bale. I'm confident that your 84 could handle it. Just an idea. Nice video by the way.
The hydro needs help. Whenever I take it on the road (rarely) I wonder if I will have to get off and push. The hydro place (Herr's Machine) isn't fond of working on the Doncaster tractors. I would love to have it fixed, but I am unsure if the would, and at what cost???
@@boehmfarm4276 I do see. A very quick Google search reveals that an option is to buy a replacement drop in unit and do a swap. All states ag parts advertise remanufactured units for 5500 plus 1986 core charge in Canadian dollars(I think). There is a used option too for 4636.10 dollars plus same as above core. Alot of money for sure, but doable. May be easier to convince someone to do a transmission swap. Your call. Just showing you another option.
This was dad's baling job. I think he's a little rusty. I would have pulled the TA back. The slower ground speed makes a tighter bale, and operating the stringer affects bale appearance. I have tried hard to perfect a SLOW, steady swing of the stringer.
@@boehmfarm4276 At some points in the video I thought you had speeded up the video. I think most of my baling is around 3 mph. Important to "weave" on a thin swath so it makes a more even bale and does not stress the cross bars on the chain. A few of my cross bars bent, broke, and were welded.
@@ihd-3603 Yes How Farms Work got to demo one a few years back... they use the same bars like NH did BUT instead of chains they use a special belt that the bars bolt to on either end... quieter and smoother operation BUT you have to wonder what that belt costs when it inevitably has to be replaced... plus connecting steel parts to rubber parts tends to create pressure points that crack and split the rubber over time SOOOO.... yeah not sure how long that would work out before big $$$ repairs... Did a really nice job he's got vids on his channel of it, but I wouldn't count on it holding up a very long time without sinking a lot of money into it for repairs... OL J R :)
As compared to small squares, they are all machine handing an can be left outside. Plus I usually make rougher hay into round bales. I won't be able to afford a large square baler for a long time.
They are better than baling wire and duck tape in a lot of situations. I keep 4 or 5 in each toolbox. Also some wire and the random bolts / rags / hitch pins like your toolbox had. I very much agree that a toolbox without a lot of random stuff will likely leave you stranded.

If we made you laugh, then we extended your life expectancy by a few minutes. Repeated treatments will gain you more time.
That bolt in the rake good fix, mine has got a bent over nail been working for years.
I feel like I'm watching myself. My NH 256 rake threw its shear pin a month ago. Luckily I wasn't far from the barn ... but rain was on the way.

We invested in a wheel rake a few years ago, it has it's down side, but man is it far and above better and tremendously faster then the old bar rakes.
You couldn't give me a wheel rake.
I had both type rakes here to use but the wheel rake is the one I keep going back to. Just so much better on uneven ground.
But their income hasn't progressed...

We used a rake tooth.
I used black wire in a jam on the same spot as Jacob. Think it was on there for 5 years before we replaced it.

Interesting to watch a baler so similar to my 847 at work. Not the firmest or neatest looking bales but it was cheap to buy and gets the job done.

I think we get the weave down well, Speed and patience with the stringer have been variable.
They are good balers. I updated to a netwrap baler and have a NH 851 for sale.
