    My initial instructor LOVED doing this. I learned that the sensory inputs often gave more relavant information than trying to interpret what the instrments were saying. He also stressed early that for a given pitch and power setting you should be able to expect the performance of the aircraft.

    My instructor did this to me on my second flight. He put sticky notes on all of my instruments for the entire flight. It definitely helped to learn to listen to the aircraft. As a future CFI I will definitely be doing this to my students.

    My CFI never covered up the instruments, but did train me from the start to look outside rather than at the instruments. Getting used to the different sight pictures in level flight, turns and ascends / descends, makes flying a lot more relaxed I think.

    My instructor got really frustrated with me being so fixated on the attitude indicator, once she put a piece of paper in front of the instruments my flying really improved quickly

    My CFI suddendly covered the instruments during beginning of practise for precision landing. And it works 😊.

    Pitch for airspeed, power for altitude.
    Power + Attitude = Performance.

    When I got my PVT in a PA-28-161, I made power adjustments by RPM sound. I could tell my RPMs by the sound of the engine and vibrations of the plane. Made flying in the pattern easy. After passing the checkride i bought noise cancelling headsets, which made it more difficult though.
    In a CFI checkride in a Robinson helicopter, I used wind sound (i could recognize my 3 critical airspeeds by sound) and another trick to avoid unusual attitudes while flying with with my eyes closed. DPE finally took the controls and put me into unusual attitudes.

      I too learned to make power adjustments by sound. It *really* came back to bite me in the butt when I started learning constant-speed props. 😅

    1,000%!!! My first lesson my instructor covered all the gauges and said fly the airplane. Flying attitude,rpm and sound. I was just talking about this yesterday. That kid that took off with his pitot tube cover still on should NOT have spun in. Should have been a non issue.

    None of my CFI ever did this. I have used this by myself as wanting to become one with my PA38 112 Piper Tomahawk.

    This whole thing requires that your seat be in the same position for every flight. You would be amazed at how many students just get in the plane and the seat will be all the way up, or all the way down. I'll say you should adjust your seat and they say oh it's ok...I personally have a procedure. Before I get in the plane, I move the seat all the way up and then move it down 2 full rotations. That way it is in EXACTLY the same position each time

    Good stuff. Amazing what you can do with sensory perceptions and the understanding of the airplane talking to you. Birds don’t have flight instruments. I have been asked what my “rotation speed” is on my 185. Answer? I have no idea. What is two potatoes after the tailwheel lifts?

    I can fly as many patterns as you want without ever looking inside the plane. My CFI for primary training was old school (he just passed away this Summer and I had the honor of preaching his funeral) and would force me to fly all flight maneuvers without looking inside the plane. So when someone asks me what speed I rotate on a normal takeoff, I have no idea. When someone asks what my airspeed is on base or final, I have no answer, because I never look at it. I look outside and takeoff or land the plane.

    Jason, I am a commercial single engine, multi engine instrument pilot with almost 600 hrs total time. At age 60 do you think it is worth the investment to becoming a CFI? What is the hardest portion of this course? Learning to fly all the maneuvers in the right seat for learning all the knowledge. Keep up the good work.

      @aviatortrucker6285 I can't speak to this as a CFI but as a recent private with only 200 hours... I'd guess it depends on what your motivations are. I'd take a 60-year old with lots of wisdom and passion for teaching over a 28-year old just trying to build hours for their airline career. I would guess teaching is a super rewarding way to spend time flying, even if not lucrative. I hope you do it!

    That looked a lot like Grass Valley /Auburn airport where Mr. Blanco Liro flies from. (based on the trees/hangars/sun) Did I win??!!! 😛 (never mind...I just watched the vid and yes it is Nevada County) I have never flown in there. Someday. Great video!!
