    As a single sided board - if you want to scan that at 1200dpi i can replicate the PCB. The inverter chips are still available and cost 70p each - so it would be easy and cheap to reproduce the interface as an open source project :)

    I marvel at the incredible inefficient use of storage this way. A digital media, played as analog sound into a tape reader.
    I am so glad to see you use the "close" button to get the CD tray back in, instead of shoving it like many people do. I'm sure the latter is just a self protection mechanism.

    I think it would be fun (and a nice alternative to a whole floppy drive) to store your games library on CD. You could burn your games to individual tracks and have a reference sheet as part of the package. Of course, there's be no saving data (easily) but a small discman or similar next to your c64 as a means to load software seems pretty cool to me!

  • @Spritetm
    @Spritetm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Makes you wonder if they could have made it more into an actual dynamic-loading CDROM system by adding an IR transmitter to some C64 port. That would allow the C64 to send the track seek commands to the CD player itself, allowing for both transparently loading more CD data, as well as playing the correct CD audio track as BGM for a game level. Hmm, perhaps some indie retro-game house could pick up that idea nowadays?

    • @EberKlaushartinger
      @EberKlaushartinger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they wanted, they could have made a cd-rom-drive for the cbm-serialport.

  • @deano023

    Many years ago back in the 90s I had an old CD-ROM in an external enclosure back when they had a play, stop and next track button on the front. I had an old C64 datasette that didn't work anymore so I butchered it and converted an RCA cable for it.
    I dumped a whole heap of software from tape to CD just for an experiment and an actually worked really well. No more rewinding and fast forwarding I could access the track directly.
    I had 3 or so CDs with software loaded on it and used it for several years afterwards. Shame I didn't keep it really..

    What an incredible retro video. So interesting to see software on CD to be audio fed into the c64. Such a tiny market could access a CD player and the dongle required to emulate the cassette drive it makes me think that this likely was a labour I’d love for someone rather than a serious commercial product.
    Thanks RMC! Another home run.

    3:50 - That box has clearly been re-wrapped by the seller (or someone else after the fact to sell it as "in foil") given the crinkly sound and look of the material.

    • @curiousottman
      @curiousottman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep. Can confirm this was rewrapped with aftermarket plastic wrap and a hot air gun. We used to do that all of the time back in the day to make it present as “new”. We had a machine that did it all too.
      I also see plenty of “new in box” disk drives and whatnot for the C64 on eBay. I sold commodore peripherals in the 80s and never did commodore ever shrink wrap a disk drive or computer.
      Caveat emptor.

The CDTV (of which the Angry Video Game Nerd says is "a home computer and a CD-ROM drive crammed into an aluminum coffin") is based on the Amiga Advanced Graphics Architecture, which was more powerful than the C64 was, as Commodore repackaged a computer as a pricier games console (for the second time!) than their home computers.

Kinda glad I never picked this up back then (and my mother was a professional singer so she had all manner of recording/playing equipment from the 50s through the 80s). Outside of the Codies and this one, I’m not aware of any other CD packs for the 8-bits.
    This one feels weird because I’d have expected more of Rainbow Arts’ own catalogue in there, especially with its focus for a German release first.
    One item worth noting with Lode Runner is that it was probably based in the cartridge release which only offered a subset of levels instead of the full 150 offered in the OG disk release.

    Try number 4 at posting this comment. There is another games CD for 8-bits. I was browsing some issues of ACE magazine (Advanced Computer Entertainment, one of Future Publishing's titles originally, but EMAP by the time) when I happened across an undated supplement called The ACE CDROM Guide. It gave some details of the Rainbow Arts and Codemasters discs, then one by Cosmi called CD Top Twenty Solid Gold Developer (really), at £19.95 for the C64 only. Also using audio to store 20 games, those mentioned are Forbidden Forest, Caverns of Khafka (misspelled in the article), Slinky, Potty Pigeon, and Grand Master Chess. [Edit: it appears to have been supplied with the May 1990 issue, so some time after the first mentions of the Rainbow Arts disc elsewhere.]
    I tried to leave a link, but even leaving it out my previous attempts to post this comment have vanished.

      I was thinking use the stereo channels to store two games on each track(one game on L, one game on R). But they weren't hurting for space, even after putting each game on the disk twice they still had room for five music tracks. So I guess it is a moot point.

    The 4069 hex inverter IC is a CMOS logic chip, not TTL, so can handle an analog input better for this purpose. I've seen similar circuits using op amps and LM3900 quad comparators, but hey if it gets the job done...
    When you used the headphone output on the CD deck, I wondered if you'd need to play with the volume level to get it to reliably read the data, or if you could have used the line-level outputs instead since they're a fixed output level. I'm curious to know what the game documentation says about that.
    Thanks for the interesting video!

    "Which means you could just as well have used tape or floppy.."
    Contemporary counter argument: "But it's on CD dude!" :)
    It was likely just way too early though. A CD player was still quite the expensive device at the time. So having one permanently attached for a non music playback use, or buying a dedicated one for a comparatively budget computer system were both market failpoints. Maybe it would have helped some if it at least included a convenient signal switch for those having the computer corner in proximity of the stereo rack. The amplifier could do this as well of course, but.. "sssskweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!" ;)

    I don't know the input impedance of that little adapter board, but you probably could have used the analog output on the back of the CD player.
    But yeah, very interesting video. Lifting on the new prospects on some new invention is something you still see even today.

    Doesn’t this open up the idea of ripping the old cassette tapes through Audacity and burning them to CD? Not saying the load times would be quicker but surly would preserve your copy? I know it’s probably not worth the hassle

      Depend on the quality of the cd, some are terrible and only lasts a few years. (disc rotting)

    Please do a proper EAC rip of this disc with log and cue for preservation purposes. There still is no such equivalent rip of any of the Codemasters CD game packs, which are all rotting due to being late-80’s PDO UK pressings. At least this one was from Sonopress!

    Good video, thanks. Somehow, I can't imagine the dongle being any different from the headphone socket on a CD player, just like the same socket on a cassette player.

    I wonder if the world record turbo loader (Slushload) would work from an audio interface like this...

    I winced seeing you unseal it. Such a rare treasure to find, that I'd have kept it intact. I'm sure a used version would have come up sooner or later. Nice video nonetheless.

      I'm so sorry and I feel your pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and my famiy kneels down every night, just before bedtime, to beg Our Lord to save such treasures from such a savage, wilful opening, and maybe to send some food to starving people, if he has any time left over.

    hehe @ 7:10 "like so". You have gone back to about the same era blue peter with that phrase, as the demo with breakfast on a CD.
    Edit.... a few TH-cam videos later and i saw Nostalgia Nerd do a very similar review but he answered a question i had in mind. Why not go straight to tack xx if you know what you want to load? Well as seen on that other video the menu track is also the turbo loader, makes perfect sense now :)

  • @duncanstyles133

    Would it have made more sense to include the code for the fast loader on each track, do away with the menu and rely on the user looking at the box for the correct track number?

    • @mspeter97
      @mspeter97 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely yes.
      But doing it like this ensures you don't need the manual or the box (in case you "lost" it) and it makes it more user friendly.

    • @megan_alnico

      @@mspeter97 I think it would have been helpful to have the directions narrated on the first track. That way if you forgot how to do anything you just play the first track.

    This sounds like a PCBWay project :) someone could adapt this so you can load games off of a CD...might be pointless with the MicroSD options but a neat option either way.

    I think for comerical product its a little cheap that the adaptor dont have a case, it looks like some homebrew project and not for something you will sell to the end user
