Those times when the players joke about the hypothetical worst case scenario, and then the DM reveals the actual monster and everyone is like "ya know, suddenly a beholder doesn't sound so bad". Those are fun times.
the drow learned that fighting the unexpectedness leads to one becoming worm chow in unexpected ways Next time we will rejoin the Mushroom Queen, VoiceKeeper, Troglodyte Sniper, and Mosquito Man as they explore more of this land that makes people want to go to Tricadia
I would honestly prefer Tricadia to the Underdark (at least there most of the lethal things have obvious weaknesses and you can just stay in the cities for at night)
Note; actual parchment is NOT paper. It's specially prepared and cured animal hide. It is different from parchment paper, which is paper treated to look like parchment. Vellum is specifically a fine parchment made from calfskin. The point is, even societies that live entirely underground would have some equivalent to parchment, not just stone tablets.
While fig wasps are what pollinates the figs and they do die in them that crunchy bit isnt dead waps its the seeds the figs have a special enzyme that actually break down the dead wasps for nutriants.
2:03:31 Fun fact, Rhinoceros beetles can lift 850 times their own weight. So that giant rhinoceros beetle could probably lift a Colossal creature. Don't know where it's going to get the leverage, but damn, that thing probably has a double digit strength modifier, or one heck of a bonus to Athletics checks.
Combats in the games I play are usually against a larger number of weak enemies. Monty seems to prefer a small number of very tough enemies. It's neat to see the different style.
I've always heard if you wanna fuck up your group you'll swarm them with a bunch of smaller guys, but if you want them to work together and feel badass you'll give them a larger enemy with a few mooks.
And if you want to be Monty, you give the party an explosive penguin, a sword that is also a giant, a pet blue dragon, sexually-flexible Improbabilities, and grandmother-issues.
Drow Poison is kinda shit, like most Sleep statuses a punch in the arm is enough to wake em up. So at best it knocks em out for a single turn, and either takes a single attack, presumably unarmed, or a full standard action away from the party.
Yes, but it's boss at taking out the ranged and sneaky types like Task and Grekles who tend to stay away from combat. Especially with that combo the drow pulled. If Monty didn't forget to give Clifford his disadvantage they probably would have lost Panic depending on the rolls. They got fucking lucky
Zito: You like Fig Newtons? CAUSE THEMS WASPS Me: Good I hate Wasps if i feed on enough of their corpses they'll either accept me as one of their own and leave me alone or se sense that I'm a major threat and leave me alone! Win win
A fun note about actual fungus wine, there's a kind of Chinese wine made from sorghum called Baiju that's fermented with fungus! One guy said it tastes like a wet dog, so I can guarantee that it's the kind of booze that'll put hair on your chest.
surprised that once they started thinking task was a troglodyte, that he smells way better than a trog, cuz troglodytes have a stench so nasty they have a whole mechanic devoted to it in their stat block, like a skunk would smell better than a troglodyte
Since the first time I heard undersun I kept thinking it's the core of the planet. Especially now that they are in the underdark and from what it sounds like the undersun is even . . . . deeper? Which would kinda make sense.
Bc here, the guys are like, level 7, so you “can” survive, but you gotta run and treat it like a soulsbourne game gunning for the boss and blowing past all the miscellaneous enemies
28:40 - Yeah, I never really understood _why_ so many people believe this. Yes, the Beast Master archetype is a mistake, but the Hunter archetype is just below the Paladin in terms of OPness. Does the Unearthed Arcana "fix" allow Favored Enemy damage to stack with Hunter's Mark? Because that would just be _egregious._ 58:58 - Borky is a Berserker, not a Totem Warrior. The 3rd-level Bear Totem is the one that halves all damage except Psychic. 1:57:14 - "There's worse things." Oh yes. Neothelids may be near the top of the Underdark food chain, but not _at_ the top by _any_ means. 1:58:45 - I'm going to guess that's the neothelid's digestive acid spray at work. It's _very_ unpleasant.
The large problem with 5e ranger is that their main abilities (favored terrain & favored enemy) aren’t useful (this is the first time it’s even come up for Task). Compare those to say, paladins smite, rogues sneak attack, or fighters action surge. Ranger is better than people say, but only because of their spells and subclass abilities.
I personally have found Favored Enemy and Favored Terrain to be _very_ useful, as long as one is actually in said terrain and fighting said enemy. They're utility abilities, the kind of thing you don't always need but are happy to have when you do, and not flashy damage-dealing combat abilities, and min-maxers generally overlook anything that doesn't increase theoretical numbers. As an aside: I always suggest to players interested in playing Rangers to not choose their Favored Enemy and Terrain until they know more about the campaign so they don't end up making a poor choice (choosing Forest in a desert-based campaign, or choosing Giants in a campaign where they'll be dealing mostly with Fiends and Elementals, etc.), unless they have a specific character idea or backstory in mind (like Task being from the Underdark and hunting a specific dragon), because the Ranger will most likely be from the area the campaign takes place in and will know the terrain and monsters in it. And when all else fails, take Beasts or Monstrosities, since both categories cover a huge number of common monsters the party will face. But of course the most important thing is to make the character that you want, because (unless you're in a meatgrinder campaign, like Curse of Strahd, Rappan Athuk, or Tomb of Annihilation) a suboptimal but fun and interesting character that you enjoy playing is always, _always_ better than some generic min-maxed cookie-cutter template character (unless you enjoy those, you do you).
episodes stream wednesday night then get posted to youtube sundays or mondays usually so they rarely go an episode ahead at most the last weeks episode gets posted the same day they stream so it can get to one episode behind
It’s always easy to tell they don’t read their abilities or understand combat half the time. It draws things out or results in situations that shouldn’t really come up. Example: Borky had advantage against the concentration spell web.
"Go to the Underdark" they said.
"It can't be any worse than Tracadia." They said.
"What could go wrong," THEY SAID.
"Then we could Leave!" They said!
I don't know, this still doesn't seem as bad as their trip to Tracadia so far.
"What's the worst that could happen?" - the said
Still feels better than Tracadia.
(Player 3 has entered the game)
Drow: wtf was that?
Party: idk, can you enlighten us eldritch abomination?
Neothelid: idk, I’m scared
