    I like him too. But this philosophy is not good for business. It is good for a DJ to walk in and not play the same song as the first DJ. As a DJ with over 11 years at the same club, I learned that the top club that prospered and succeeded was the club that gave the crowd what it desired, The HITS, all night. What I call a warm up is when I turn on all devices and PA shipment, I do not start out at 132 bpm. I start with 100 bpm at a lower volume to ease the people into the 12,000 watts of power they will be hearing for 5 hours.You have to set a pleasant drinking mode in a bar. Then when the energy rises is when you play the jams for the higher crowd. Just my opinion as a resident DJ. Peace to the readers.

      djchristrent This is really handy to know thank you sir. When I read "you have to set the mood for drinking at the bar". aka when people are just arriving, some nice bests, 100bpm, nothing too banging where you feel like headbutting everyone lol. Nice and smooth. Then as more and more people arrive energy rises then slowly start to transition into more harder for the main set. Thank you for your great analogy. Something clicked in my head when you said that and I kind of understand warm up sets a little better.

    Dude I've been beat matching since 1989. I wanted to show my son some videos. You're the only one making you tube vids that don't try to tute your own horn. Too many guys on here trying to show how good they are.
    I also seen one video where a guy had his pitch control already set.
    Thanks man. Keep up the good work.

    This might be the most important thing for any DJ to learn. Love your work man. I told myself many years ago that I wanted to learn to warm up, because it is the hardest thing to do in any club and it is very underappriciated.. but if you are doing it well, you can play anywhere.

    Just stumbled upon your video. Great advice for the newbies. Use to DJ in the 80's in LA and remember the advice of my mentor " Don't blow your wad" from the get go. Just got back into it for the past 4 years and really know how to " Make love" to the crowd. It's sound advice no matter what you are playing, no matter what kind of crowd you have-cheers!

    Good Tip
    As a mobile Dj, I have found this method to be the best. I do alot of weddings and find that using this method really does get people up and dancing. I also find that using tunes people like to sing along too a good way of getting people warmed up.

    Another tip would be to mess around with keys. I took your advice and played a set at work. My boss said in order to start building the mood for a main set usually we can start introducing songs with an uplifting feel and in MINOR key (one in order of the circle of fifth or the Camelot wheel), continue a few songs in that same key to set the tone and then carry on from there.

    • @ibuprofen303
      @ibuprofen303 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you choose a minor key for an uplifting feel? Or is that deliberate? So uplifting and slightly more "serious"?

    • @MrPainseeker
      @MrPainseeker 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ibuprofen303 If you know about the circle of fifth, triads and chords, a minor-major-major stack always feels good .... (got no right word for it). To get what I mean listen to any non electronic three-chord song that follows this pattern. I can suggest some songs from Iron Maiden such as Fear of the Dark (kinda cliche but u will see what I mean). Em-F-G, Am-F-G, Bm-G-A etc. In similar ways, provided songs have similar energy levels, and provided you identified the key correctly (not just traktor or mixed-in-key), you can pull off this same technique to create something similar in terms of songs. If you've been playing a musical instrument for a long time this should come to you very quickly. Although this might be too much and unnecessary, I've been playing guitar for much longer than DJing, I like to play around with keys more than concentrating on making a clean transition. And this also helps create mashups with hotcues on the fly.

    I enjoy your explanation, and your show like a stand up comedian. Brilliant. Please, could you explain how to mix, with different styles of music, and so with different BPM

  • @sergeyolson7815
    @sergeyolson7815 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love the beatboxing from ellaskins lol.
    My take on a warm up set is within a confined BPM. From 117 to 123. The first track serves as an intro, very light then slowly builds up with second track at 120 BPM. I rate each track based on energy level (low, mid, high) for a particular BPM. So if there's a banging track at 123BPM imagine how much better it will be further on with 128BPM, 136BPM, and 140 BPM.
    My theory is to mix by the key signature and do a bit of hopscotch in a way to get to the high level energy tracks (not saying that 120-122BPM don't have theirs as well) in a particular key that's different than first starting.
    Right now I would feel most comfortable just doing the warm up because I know its my job to build up the tension and the hype for the crowd to be wanting more. And so what if people are just arriving, talking, getting drinks, let them because the music is in the background till a song is played that suddenly gets people's attention. Read the crowd! Do they look bored? Play something to make sure it's interesting. Just my thoughts on my own take and style.
    I would construct a 2 hour set that takes you from 120BPM and finish at 140BPM, starting from Tech-House to Techno, Progressive House, Old School Trance, Trance, and finish with Tech-Trance. Get all sorts of styles of EDM. Of course it's not always do able to go to such lengths in genres.

  • @spinmoney101
    @spinmoney101 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DJJfr3sh Make sure the your settings which are on top of the spinner wheel is set to ABS or Rel.. make sure either or are highlighted. I usually have them on Rel mode

    I used to be of the opinion of "Screw that noise i'll play what I want." After doing some experiment, this method actually gets more people out dancing at the beginning of the night as opposed to just playing bangers.

    Great tip in this tutorial, I've been thinking about this a lot today too so this video really helped me out! :D I remember going to a club in SF & this one DJ started his set with a psytrance remix of "sweet dreams" (amazing) everyone was totally feeling it in the beginning but as the set continued, I felt a decline in the energy... the crowd started moving around less. It's harder to hold up the weight of the set (possible, but hard) So your tip here is brilliant when Dj'ing! ;)

    Most people (at least here in Sweden) never go to the clubs before 11-12 pm.
    So lets say most clubs open at 9, that means that most people wont even be there to hear the warm up DJ's, which mess up the whole theory about building up the crowd.
    The people usually stay until 2-3 am which means they wont be there to hear the 1-2 last DJ's.
    I dont know if I agree with the whole idea about having a warm up DJ's for regular clubs. But yeah if its someone like Tiesto...sure a warm up DJ is good.

    I find most tech house, house djs only want to play their latest tunes, rarely do I hear classics, so as a warm up dj I dont see it as a problem to be playing banging tunes that are older and probably would not be getting played by the main dj.

    I play longer sets, like 8hours+. I Start with oldskool trance, thru acid trance (cca 145bpm), to slow acid techno(cca 150bpm) to Cluster records at 155BPM, than go to 1st ten Subsounds @ 160bpm...whats next? Than I somehow improvise with faster acid/tribe till I get to DSP @ almost 180 BPM, thats like 2-3morning and bass needs to be big :D... than I switch to Spiral tribe @ 180bpm and when thats done and the sun is almost going up, I switch to hard stuff to kill the party so I can go sleep :) Some records I never play on daylight, ever!!! :D

    Good vid, it's a shame to see how many DJ's don't see the point of a proper warm up set. A few weeks ago I had to play in a local club with a friend and the guy before us played a really nice set... just not for that time. The room was still empty and this guy already played his biggest bangers and stuff. Really annoying for us to take down the whole vibe and restart the whole thing because it just wouldn't work out. Such DJ's should first watch Ellaskins videos and start playing afterwards.

    For example you would use low bpm and songs that use keys that give a mellow vibe and then when you are about to end your set you raise the bpm and use song with keys that are exciting.

    Lil question, he's there a way to know exactly if a song can go in the warm-up list?
    Like, if it goes at this 100 bpm, its a warm-up song, or certain genre r definitely warm-up song ?
    Don't know if i make myself clear :/
    Anyway

      DJ Fig Masta I read your question seem like Ellaskins is busy :) He says that in the night starts warm up track are melodics, so you have to organize your track's. Like for example if you go with some track that is 4 to 4 beat litlle groovy nothing special no big stuf inside but still is groovy track.Every track can go in warm up,only not BANGING TUNES lol.somthin smooth,to keep people swing and happy and they will follow you! And for bpm like that 100,you will def.not like to play that in the middle of warm up set or night,so you bring it at the start! Every tracks that are melodics,and groovy can go in warm up set! And of course have fun with that! Cheers

    I think this can be used in every build up of a set. A lot of people are putting up there mixes here on youtube. They should start their sets by building up a feeling (warm up) and then go fully mental with their baning tunes.
    I also have a question. If I get to be the warm up dj for a party/club/forest I will as you describe try to give the crowd more of a feeling in my set. BUT at the end of my set, can i raise the bar just a tiny wheeny bit for the next dj?
