    I can’t help but feel Subaru sandbagged the WRX to keep room for the STI. The reality is that most people buy the WRX as a fun daily driver, so fingers crossed the STI turns the dial to 11 for us more performance/track-oriented folk. The chassis improvements are very welcome though - that’s not something easily alleviated in the aftermarket (barring weld-in bracing and cages).

      I got one at 67. Had a 2016 from 2017 through 2023. The new WRX is much better than the VA chassis. This is my daily. The weekend car is a 2019 Bullitt.

    To say there isnt much difference to last gen is not accurate. I've driven both and this newest gen is better in every way and has resolved many of the issues that kept me from buying the last gen. It has less road noise, better ride quality, and wayy better driveability. You can actually shift this smoothly and the shifter has shorter crisper throws to the point where you don't really need the short throw shifter pkg. These guys aren't paying attention or need their memory re-freshed.

    I have watched all of the new 2022 WRX reviews on TH-cam and this is by the oddest collection of comments. Bad ride, slow, gearing too short, slow steering, etc etc. So much negative conversation with a low level of energy. The whole discussion was very somber like they don’t like their jobs.

    I only drove FWD cars for more than 20 years before I bought a used i3 (it's a RWD EV). I thought it would be a big change, but I agree with Alex that it doesn't really make a big difference due to modern traction control systems and such. I often forget that my car is RWD. I use winter tires (in the winter) and I've had no issues in snow.

    • @robob221
      @robob221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe I hear you in regards to modern traction control but nothing can compare to full time awd. Light rain will ruin a fun time time on the street with any 2 wheel drive car, especially if you don’t have a differential. Cutting power is a common concern that traction control introduces during acceleration and turning. Even in the dry, the feeling of thrust from all for corners is unique just like any other drivetrain configuration. The wrx will always be regarded until someone can replicate its traction mastery.

    I think the new WRX looks much better than what they’ve had for the past 10 years. I like the rugged off road style. More wheel travel is great, that might be why it’s a little stiffer to keep the on road handling. 8 speed automatic is definitely the way to go with these modern turbo motors. I have a Clubman and it’s a great combo.

    Subaru needs to bring back the five door WRX. I had to replace mine with a Forester XT. Then Subaru discontinued that as well. Now they have nothing in the lineup I find even remotely interesting. They had the potential with their upcoming BEV to be a torque monster, but it has specs out of 2018. The Solterra has nowhere near enough power, speed, or range to be competitive or replace the old five door WRX or Forester XT

    I have always loved the "bang for the buck" of the WRX and that is why I bought one in 2015. Looking at the new one I am disappointed in a few things. First the suspension still being stiff is one of my biggest gripes with mine so the new one does not sound like an improvement. Second the soundproofing has not been improved making long trips more fatiguing. And of course like many people the extensive black plastic is a visual turn off. I guess I have outgrown the WRX. I just don't know what I could buy to eventually replace mine!

      I have to disagree, I traded my much loved 2015 WRX for the new top spec manual WRX, it is a better car in every possible way. The suspension is way stiffer, yet much more comfortable as is the soundproofing. I’m in Australia, but I’d have thought they’re building them the same regardless of destination

  • @axeya366
    @axeya366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The new price hike is only a small jump compared to other cars from other manufacturers who jacked it up quite a lot. So with inflation i mind and supply and demand etc, it is not really that bad for the new WRX and soon to be STI reveal.

  • @aptkeyboard3173
    @aptkeyboard3173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My 2¢, the suspension is not uncomfortably stiff. I live in Seattle (our roads are terrible lol) and just bought a 2022 WRX. It is firm but if you live somewhere that doesn’t have the worst roads ever, it’s not bad. My previous car had a stiffer ride than this WRX.

  • @ragweedmakesmesneeze
    @ragweedmakesmesneeze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Okay, so the whole "too stiff" suspension comment has me thinking. Basically all the reviewers have this same complaint. Along with hating the plastic body cladding. And not being a fan of the new infotainment set-up. Add in the "give me back the hatchback" crowd, and I'm wondering if getting an Impreza with some available STi accessories, like the short-shifter, and the strut-tower brace is actually a better way to get a sporty, reasonably priced AWD daily driver? The Impreza still has the older dash style with big manual HVAC controls and a smaller screen. MSRP $20,939!

    • @judih.8754

    • @icemantuck2638

      If you're fine with slower acceleration, the 5-door Impreza Sport is a good looking, fun car. The Sport interior looks nicer than the WRX's interior, IMHO. If Subaru put the BRZ powerplant in the Impreza Sport, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. As far as a WRX wagon, that was easier to do when the WRX was just a performance package added to the Impreza. Now that it has been made a standalone model, it would be expensive to develop a wagon too. I wish Subaru had made the 22 a liftback design, thus blending the sedan looks with some wagon practicality.

    Interesting insights into this new car with the Subaru global platform chassis.
    I think its an interesting car and a long term test would show you what it's like to have a performance daily driver that can do so much in all weather conditions.
    When you do a long term test of this vehicle I would definitely test different sidewall aspect ratios (tire thickness) because it seems that the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT600A with the 40 aspect ratio is too low and transfers a lot of that rebound damping into the chassis. Perhaps a 45/50/55 or even a 60 (SUV and truck territory) aspect ratio would work better for overall ride quality.

      That's because the engine was over the front wheels. With EVs, the battery tends to be spread over the bottom of the car, and with the motor(s) in back, weight distribution will be just as good for rear wheel drivers.

    While Subaru's choice to keep the black plastic cladding unpainted is debatable, it's unlikely they chose to do so to save money. More likely it's an intentional styling decision to break up the visual bulk from the profile. It would have been less costly just to engineer the body and fender stampings all the way to the wheel well edge and use basic inner well lining. Then they wouldn't have to bother engineering 3D plastic cladding, working out the logistics of said cladding with a supplier, and bear the associated costs. The VW ID4 does the same

    Ya but, according to Subaru's website, it has throttle override--if brake is pressed simultaneously with gas, brake overrides throttle and kills power. I thought that alone was a little silly, but possibly able to turn it off somehow or disconnect the sensors used for the system to work. Get the base model and change the suspension to softer. Softer is better for a road car anyway.The other problem with the touch screen is the snow in Philly. I can't use that crap with winter gloves on. Just put a giant dial on it. damn.

    Recently caught a nail in my model Y. It was never a problem in Highlander - stop by at a tire shop, get it fixed. Called four places in south jersey and no one dared to fix it. The excuse? Either don't have a lift to handle the car or don't know how to do it. Finally, contacted my go to repair shop in central Jersey where I was told that I might need a new tire because Tesla's tires have special foam inserts and if that insert is damaged - tire is not repairable. So, $350 later I have my flat fixed and lesson learned - think twice before going for a longer trip. What if it happened in a rural area? Stuck for days?!
