I've argued with so many people in the US about tipping, it's bs. Almost every other country in the world doesn't make you tip. Hell, I took my wife out to eat the other day, and right when we were leaving the cashier picked up our bill and said "What, no tip?" that shook me at first because that's the first time I've been confronted about it. So I had my wife write down a dollar on the ticket or whatever. It's bullshit, a company should pay their employees, not me. You get paid to do your job, I shouldn't have to tip you for being nice, taking my order, and bringing me my food. That's your JOB, if you don't like it get another one. It's not like you tip at fast food, or anywhere else either. "Oh but the food cost will go up if-" then let it go up because I refuse to tip. I especially refuse to tip 20%. like really? I can literally go out to eat AGAIN if i pay another 20%, bs. Some of you might be reading this going 'oh he's just a cheap bastard" and that may be true to a certain extent, but my point still stands.
Then don't eat at a dine in. By not tipping you're not punishing the restaurant you're punishing the server. Plus they have to pay others such as bus boys 5% of their sales so they're actually paying to serve you your food.
Ah yes, I love England. I don’t have to pay 20% of the price of my meal to my waiter and instead the waiter is just paid enough that tips aren’t needed.
I’m a Brit, and when I went to the US with my family, we went to a restaurant and it was nice and whatever, but when the bill came, my dad paid it in full, but the waitress came out after us and sprinted down the street like Usaie Bolt and started having a rant that we didn’t leave her a tip, and we were confused af and just walked away
Im a brit aswell. Me and my family went to a nice expensive restaurant that basically ended the trip. We got up to leave when the waiters halted us and my 3 year old sister had to cough up 30$
Those fucking waiter doesn’t understand what tipping really is U might always get tip but when someone doesn’t tip you, you dont have the authority to force people to must pay you tip. They already paid your food, did it stated in the law that the server must get tip or it will be a crime for not to tip? They can say the customer is asshole for not giving a tip, but for me the person who got the audacity to force customer to tip them is a bigger asshole
One of the reasons why I never applied for a job as a waiter is because of this whole tipping expectation. It would make me super uncomfortable. Almost like I'm being thrown a bone for doing my job. Luckily as a stripper I don't deal with that nonsense
I live in Ireland and I literally didn't even know what a tip was until we went to America and the waiter asked my mam how we were going to pay the tip. They even have the option to pay the waiters using card. Wtf?
I've worked as a dishwasher. It's sweaty, dirty, wet, non-stop work. i see the waiters and waitresses standing around and flirting all day, and they get huge tips, on top of their salary. So they get almost twice as much money for half the work. I can barely afford to go to a restaurant, let alone tip someone that makes more money than I do.
Same here. Worked my ass off as a dishboy, which included mopping the entire restaurant myself and the bathrooms as well EVERY DAY! And I got paid way less than the waitresses who got tips once EVERY OTHER TIME (sandwich shoppe).

In America, restaurant employees are paid less than minimum wage because they're expected to make up for the rest in tips. It's a shitty system and should be abandoned completely.
+Ryotaiku Though the employer is legally required to pay the difference to minimum wage when tips don't add up to it. But this requires reporting tips which no one (server or owner) do because then it's possible for it to be taxed.
In America every single job that can get tipped is payed like half the salary of minimum wage, so you're considered a jerk because since your not tipping, even though it's not your fault that they don't get like any money
Actually, the employer is obligated to pay the waiter minimum wage if the tips dont equal their pay to 7.25 an hour. So really its the restaurant businesses screwing their own workers. Did you know they get tax credits for payrolls when most of the money is coming from the tippers? How about these business owners stop being assholes and pay their workers liveable wages.

Also, the problem with what your saying is. if everyone stopped tipping it would work, but face, that isnt going to happen in some youtube comment section dude. If it was going to happen we would need a hugely organized even with millions of people
@Haku infinite the flaws in your logic: 1) a lot of restaurants would be forced to close their doors because the labor costs of adding 40 servers weekly salary to payroll probably wouldnt transition well for many companies. 2) the stores solution otherwise would likely be to fire a lot of servers, which would result in a severe decline of service quality. 3) servers being paid minimum wage without tips would cause an uproar, as hundreds of thousands of people would find their livelihoods suddenly gone. 4) even if servers were paid minimum wage, that's only 7.25 per hour, you would have to work 100 hours a week to afford rent, insurance, other bills, and that's as a single person. Imagine having a family, or a pet. You would see a loss of service staff which may also cause companies to close their doors as people search for other means to make a living. Because you know restaurants wouldnt be willing to pay more than minimum wage as it is. 5) menu costs would increase, and it is likely that in an effort to save cost, others things would slip through the cracks, like structural integrity, working conditions, or sanitation. Would you really want to eat in a restaurant that doesnt clean the way it used to? Lack of staff and being unable to afford the labor costs to keep the staff there to finish cleaning duties would quickly result in numerous infestations, something many restaurants already struggle with.
@Haku infinite to clarify: I wouldnt be opposed to servers making a livable wage, it's just that it would require many things to change, not just whether or not people tip waitstaff.
@Haku infinite In most places waiters actually get paid so we dont give random people our money when it is the employers responsibility to pay them, and tbh America is a shithole rn
In America restaurants typically only have a minimum wage of $2.13 an hour (1.58 pounds). There is absolutely no way that any waiter/waitress can live off of that.
@@SM-ce1uy I get that, but unless you are an owner of a restaurant, there’s nothing that can be done. If you don’t tip, nothing is going to change. I see why tipping is pretty much... useless. Though, in my opinion (at least here in Germany that is, idk how it really works lmao), I leave tips at restaurants, if I’ve been there more than twice before and I really really really enjoyed the food. Good thing is that they don’t ask for it! I just loved eating food there, since it is quite rare for me to be able to go there. So therefore, I leave a tip there.
Blame it on the greed of business owners. They pay way below minimum wage assuming that the generosity of the customers will support you. In some cases you can make a ridiculously large amount of money for such an easy job. In other cases you could be working your ass off to barely get to minimum wage. But the owners don't care, they'll just keep hiring until they find people who are happy with it.
If restaurants took your suggestion, your meals would be much more expensive. They would have to pay wait staff the same hourly rate on busy days as slow days (which means YOU would end up paying), effectively paying them to stand around. In turn you would be charged more to eat there. It turns out better for everyone involved to just leave a measly 16-20% tip.

Waiters main source of income comes from tips and even including tips they still make a small amount of money around 20k a year. Some states, restaurant businesses dont have to abide by minimum wage. Also being a waiter seems easy, it is compared to being a doctor but it's still more complicated than getting an order, ordering it, and just serving it then clean up but due to how much you work, you have to deal with a fair amount of bullshit such as rude people, no tips, loud people. +CascadeWing : Wages are between the employer and the employee, and are not the responsibility of the customer. Also, what constitutes a wage worth working for is arbitrary. Those who want more than an employer is willing to pay (or can afford to pay) are free to work elsewhere, and can look into developing more valuable skills worth greater pay. I have nothing against voluntary tipping, but the pressure to tip and the expectation of tips is tacky and presumptuous. Certain restaurants here in Canada automatically add a tip to your bill. I find that reprehensible. Either charge more up front, or get your hand out of my pocket.
Most restaurants in the US (atleast the major food chains) add to the bill as well. And a argument used by the employer is that it's not fair to the other people at minimum wage since waiters can get hundreds of extra dollars a week from tips. While it's not the strongest case,I though I'd bring it up.
The issue is that the employers are under no legal obligation to pay their employees minimum wage, at least in the case of restaurants. If you'd like to come over here and attempt to negotiate an acceptable wage with the owner of a restaurant for a waiter/waitress position, I would *love* to hear the success story. Consider the position of someone actually in need of a job, who doesn't have the luxury of shopping around at every establishment in a 30-mile radius for the ideal place of employment. Restaurant's hiring. You need money. A pittance is better than nothing. Better take the job. Not saying it should be "our responsibility as consumers" to pay for it, but it really isn't, at least in America. You're free legally to not pay them a tip. If you can't handle the resulting glare or fleeting judgement, the fact of you being pathetic is your own problem. Edit: I should clarify that they *are* legally obligated to make up the difference, should the tipped salary not equal the minimum wage, but unfortunately this is incredibly easy to weasel out of, and many people are none the wiser.
You pretty summed it up. Every who wants to leave their shitty restaurant job cant or may not be to afford to leave cause those bills will start to pile up and if you tell your service provider (a.k.a. hydro, electricity, credit card etc.) you didnt like your job cause it was shitty and is now looking to "develop more valuable skills worth better pay" you can rest assured that you services will be infact *CUT OFF* and you might just end up getting a law suit sent your way for payment neglect

THEY TELL YOU WHERE YOU SHOULD START TIPPING. 15% was once considered great service, now it's the basic tip. places like Japan consider tipping offensive like they will literally run after you to give you back your money, because they consider the service as part of the food

They could only hope you are wearing your finest attire . Then there are the sociopaths that might actually spit in your food or rub dick in your to go box , maybe drop your protein on the floor ( chicken , steak , fish , etc ) in hopes you get food poisoning . Actually, the employer is obligated to pay the waiter minimum wage if the tips dont equal their pay to 7.25 an hour. So really its the restaurant businesses screwing their own workers. Did you know they get tax credits for payrolls when most of the money is coming from the tippers? How about these business owners stop being assholes and pay their workers liveable wages.

well i would be 100% behind that, but the waiters get paid dogshit, and cant do shit about it. its been normalized so now we are fucking forced to give our moneys. And i am going to tip people just so they can pay rent and shit. This nation is fucking it is in a downward spiral, minneapolis looks like a fallout map rn, and the entire nation is divided. We are fucked we have gone past the point of return
Haku infinite Dude im talking about the riots there, they fucked the place up.
You would need everyone in America to stop tipping for something to change. Even then, that “change” would just be restaurant items increasing in price, essentially forcing you to tip.
@@tominonamizake8102 Well then you would still pay the same amount, its just that you would be forced to because the tips would be factored into their wages. Also, this current system gives waitresses a reason to be nicer and more accommodating to customers since they’ll get paid more through tips. I honestly think it is a better system.

They are not. The owner is required to pay them at least 8$ if they are not able to earn that much with tax declared tips. The IRS published numbers on how much waiters earn and the average is 18$ with tips, 14$ if serving in a backwards town. Turned out most people are able to both earn more $ and not declaring it to earn even more.
But the owners don't care, they'll just keep hiring until they find people who are happy with it.
exactly
+SuperStupidPoop then find a better job. why would you punish customers? judging people for not giving tip is a dick move
+SuperStupidPoop yeah . . . I have worked as a "tipped employee" before, and got to keep ALL of the tips put in my hand, I made a metric fuck tonne more than the waitresses at 15 an hour with tips. hell I was almost keeping up with the bartenders. the minimum wage is 5 something per hour or whatever for delivery drivers, but when you do 10 or so deliveries an hour, you average about 30-50 an hour TAX FREE! dont give me any of this greedy business owner bullshit, you're wrong.

Waiters/waitresses work hard
Do you give doctors tips when they do surgery?
Maybe but most likely NOT
Waiters main source of income comes from tips and even including tips they still make a small amount of money around 20k a year. Then they also have to manage a lot not only in the dining area but also in the kitchen, asking if chefs can focus on a another dish of a long waiting customer, orders getting mixed up, etc. Being a waiter in America sucks quite a lot. So please dont degrade the job of a waiter cause it's hard ass work and a lot of shit to deal with. Sorry for the essay, I'm in school and bored.

I had reasonable cash then so I tipped him $50. Other than that I don't really tip, but hey I live in Australia where tipping's not really a thing
From east europe all the way to japan tipping gets from "weird" to rude.
How far east are we speaking? I'd like to plan my immigration accordingly :P?
Because those people are smart.

A tip is supposed to be a gift. A gift is given voluntarily. Expecting gifts is presumptuous and tacky. "Manditory tipping" is more like a tax.
It's due to the fact waiters in the US are barely paid at all,and rely completely on tips.
I worked as a valet before and honestly I never asked for tips or even went above and beyond in my work. People still tipped me though even though I basically just acted like a robot throughout my whole shift.

No you wouldnt. he would be just like everyone else. He cant rant about anything in school.

That's why we eat at McDonald's, you aren't expected to tip
But they need the tips more than any other restaurant workers because they work hard in filthy conditions and don’t even get paid enough
@@WubbaDubba198 What do you mean the mcdonalds in my town are clean as hell and they get paid well.
@@hellawicked6184 Yeah in England, they get checked for food hygiene more times in a month than many american places are in a year. If the standards drop as low as the McDonalds over there, they'd get a penalty or shut down for good. Plus, people get paid a livable wage, which is why we don't need to tip.
You have solved the american obesity problem, actually pay the waiters
@@WubbaDubba198
But we should tip if we think they deserve more and thats 0.0001% of the time so yeah

Tipping in the US started around the Great Depression when store owners wouldn’t pay their workers as much from the depression but didn’t pay them more after so they needed tips to survive on their salary and it became legal just for restaurants.
Grade is a better insulter than gordan
Yeah, because instead of having a good reason to insult people, Grade just has pure, unfiltered anger.

In America, (last I saw) waiters don't get minimum wage, having to rely on tips.

Well to be fair waiters get shit payment at the end of the day(I wasn't one myself yet) and I know this because I went to a restaurant and that's how payment is given as the waiters split tips at he end of the day with some even getting away with paying them like 2 or slightly more dollars an hour, hardly a living to make off of it right?
tipping is indeed a scam, that's just restaurants paying their employees like $3/hr (half of minimum wage) and expect them to get it back from customers. it has even gotten to a point where some restaurants give suggestions for tipping starting at 15%. THEY TELL YOU WHERE YOU SHOULD START TIPPING. 15% was once considered great service, now it's the basic tip. places like Japan consider tipping offensive like they will literally run after you to give you back your money, because they consider the service as part of the food
I rarely tip people and when I don't tip they threaten to get me locked up in jail for theft and slander. and I just run away before they can. its not theft if you ask for 20$ I give you 20$, I get arrested for theft like WTF
consider the what
Why do I have trouble imagining being threatened with legal action for theft and slander (what? slander?) over not tipping? Oh, because it doesn't happen, that's why.
Japan knows where it's at.

I go to a Chinese restaurant and they charge 15%-25% for tip

The workers are probably being treated like shit or they are one of those restaurant that takes their workers' tips
A relative of mine went to a restaurant and automatically applied gratuity to their bill. She complained and said she wouldn’t pay the gratuity and didn’t have to. Owner insisted she did. Relative called the police, she got a free meal and the restaurant got a heavy fine.
Ahahahahahaha, the restaurant just went from a 5/5 hygiene rating to a 1/5
Me too
I live in NYC, almost every restaurant I go to around here automatically includes a 10-15% tip in their calculations and if you pay with a card you have to express straight out to the wait staff that you don’t want to tip (and how do you think that goes?)
Ya see, in Poland we don't tip we just pay the amount and fuck out.

Expect your future service to be negligent to the point of nonexistent then . Servers profile " stiffers " and have ways of fucking you over without getting in trouble . Let your food die in the window ( get cold ) , turn your order in late on purpose , neglect your drink refills as you watch us fill others , conveniently forget to bring you anything you ask for ( like extra napkins , or sides of condiments ) , the more ballsy server may " accidentally " spill an entire tray of drinks in your lap and apologize gratuitously to cover their tracks in hopes you never return , and your day and clothes are ruined . They could only hope you are wearing your finest attire . Then there are the sociopaths that might actually spit in your food or rub dick in your to go box , maybe drop your protein on the floor ( chicken , steak , fish , etc ) in hopes you get food poisoning .
Point is , don't fuck around , you don't know what your server could be capable of .
Maybe don't eat at a place where tipping is expected , go to fucking fast food , or get your mom to cook it for you .
Fuck off .

+Adil Mohammed Why don't waiters speak up to their owners and demand more than minimum wage for their jobs? The issue of compensation should be placed on the restaurant owner's not the customers.
+Scott Otocki more than likely those people would be fired on the spot Scott. Everyone's just trying to make ends meet. You're right in saying the owner should be in charge of fair wage and compensation. But it realistically won't happen.

So what if the waitress' wage is not up to standards? It's not my fucking responsiblity. They ask for 20 dollars, they get 20 dollars.
+Shane Nzinga Yes actually, but they're not gonna change it. But he can leave a tip and be a good person.
+Luke Yager I would only give a tip in these circumstances: Service was really nice, waiter was my friend, or I have been there for a while.
But then the waiter gets fired for not getting enough tips. If you require a differential it shows poor customer service because presumably customers aren't giving you tips because they hate you.
+Mel Gibson goes on a diet. If the waiter does a crap job. don't tip. But if they are good, tip.
+Dylan Brown Small boy. This is a place for discussion, not shitty comebacks.
Because restaurants were in trouble of going under in the early 1900s and rich people were offering tips before that for special treatment and restaurants couldnt pay their employees at the time and told them to take the tips for payment

Put simply, In America--waiters and waitresses are not paid the federal minimum wage. They make their wages THROUGH tips. If you don't tip, you are essentially leaving the waiter/waitress nothing to live on. Not saying that's okay--our government needs to pay them minimum wage. So basically, SINCE they earn tips, the government allows restaurants to pay them less than minimum wage. So now they NEED tips to earn a living...yea it's dumb.
