I've said this ever since I saw " WSS " in the summer of '61 : " COOL " is THE greatest ensemble dance sequence ever put on film. Even " America", as good as it is , simply cannot compare with the brilliance of " Cool " . It stand alone in filmed dance. -------------MJL, 76 y/o
Robbins did not actually co-direct "Pajama Game." He was hired as a backup, in case Fosse--whose first show this was as a choreographer--didn't work out and insisted on co-director credit. Despite the fact that Abbott had worked with him on his early shows, they had come to dislike each other intensely. "America" wound up being an all-female number on stage only because the assistant stage manager had failed to call the male dancers for that day's rehearsal and Robbins cut them from the number in a typical fit of pique.
