  • A short story about the state of VHS video piracy in 1990. DO IT LIVE!!!
    Retrontario’s primary mission is the preservation, research and exhibition of rare videotape recordings (1970s to 1990s) recorded off of any and all Ontario (and surrounding area) TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. We also hope to create an ongoing oral history of this content through comments left below the videos. Please add to this evolving history, if you know more information pertaining to the clips, fondly remember them or have a modern thought all comments are welcome! For more information on how to help in our mission please visit us at: www.retrontario...

    There are anime shows that are lost to time because Japan was dead serious about copyright protection. They even sued Blockbuster over video games that they no longer sell .

    Ah yes, the good old days where if you had two VCRs, you could always make a duplicate copy of what you rented at the video store.

    I had a friend back in the early 90's who's parents pirated every movie they rented. Most of them they would just take home, pirate, return to the video store and watch the pirated copy whenever. In the living room they had a wall of generic tapes you bought blank full of movies they'd pirated. Each one had 3 or 4 movies on it. In their bedroom closet they had a pretty decent sized box with a padlock on it. One day my buddy got ahold of the key and he and I opened it the next day after school before they got home to see what was inside. It was all the XXX movies they had rented over the years and also pirated. He let me take one tape that had 4 movies on it, and that was the only piece of pornography I had access to until I was old enough to buy it myself lol. Ironically, one of the movies on it starred Traci Lords; which would make the possession of that VHS tape a felony sex offense under current law. I'm pretty sure it was thrown away when my parents moved 25 years ago.

    This was interesting. I only use magnetic tape for data storage and day-to-day tasks such as "surfing the net" and editing movies. It has an authenticity that data stored to digital hard drives never can.

      Magnetic tape is immune to blu-ray influence as well. It just can't store all that data! HIGH RESOLUTION of blu-ray production makes everything look SO terribly sharp and crisp, things looks unreal. You can see brushstrokes on freshly-painted walls, read license plate numbers (illegal), and worst of all people look OLDER! In the 1950's Ronald Reagan narrated an LP album
      entitled "The Horrors Of High Resolution".....my Aunt Gladys listened to the whole thing with her Bridge Club
      one afternoon...I try to get her to talk about it but she gets too emotional sometimes.

    'Illegal theft'... except the original tape was still there. This is why the legalese always refers to it as 'unauthorized duplication', it's more accurate.
    Dear entertainment/software companies: people like free stuff as much as you like profit.

    Yea and those same video stores were renting-out Tengen NES games, and look how that worked out for nintendo

    • @SPINNINGMYWHEELS777
      @SPINNINGMYWHEELS777 ปีที่แล้ว

      how did it work out for Nintendo? Probably better? Any advertising is good for those big corporations.

    • @arqivist2077
      @arqivist2077 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tengen games aren't really illegal. They are products that are reverse engineered to work with the NES, but do not copy anything from Nintendo. They kicked Tengen to the curb as a Nintendo licensee after probably breaking some exclusivity clause, causing the products to be essentially banned from being sold in most major retailers that carry licensed Nintendo games. Besides that, Tengen's software, made up largely of coin-op conversions, were all produced under license from the distributors and developers of the arcade originals.

    Piracy 😂 There was a time in 1981ish though that there were some very creepy pasta video rental places.. one in my town got busted for Child Porn thankfully they got shut down real fast. They also had all the craziest Horror movies .. so kind of a lure I think.
