Are kings/Monarchs still relevant in Nigeria today? I believe there should a national referendum to decide whether or not this institution should be continue to exist.
Oodua a gbe wa o. This is my take on this. Many of these panelists are half-baked historians. Different Obas in the ancient Yoruba land chose their own orisa (gods) they worshipped. Alaafin was perculiar to Sango, Ogun, Esu etc., Awujale was perculiar for Agemo and Yemoja., Alake was perculiar to Orisa Oko and Aje etc. However, those Obas accomodated all orisas while some of them did not accomodate all orisas in their land. Ewi did not allow Esuku gods and expelled their worshippers from his land until 1845. Thus, there were accounts of shifts in allegiance or preference for one deity over another even in the ancient times due to personal beliefs, political reasons, or regional influences. For instance, Sango Alaafin himself was said to place less emphasis on the worship of Ogun compared to earlier Alaafins, favoring his own divine attributes. So, if you have modern Obas embracing more religion or shifting allegiances, it is not a new thing because the traditional stool is not exclusive to the onisese, it is for all. Oba should be free to go all religious gatherings and affiliate with all of them. If you make Isese attractive to them and they could still weigh thesame POWER abnd ENERGY like before, many of them will shift allegiance back to Isese, but many Isese practitioners today too are just mere business men carrying fake opele around that cannot do much. Thus, the panelists should go back and learn their history rather than being unnecessarily angry that Oba (olori gbogbo ilu) is embracing more power from more energy-repositories. In summary Onisese cannot claim ownership of any traditional stool. Each ancient Obas chose their own orisas to worship, yet embraced others as the head of all.
Don't mind that man. The era of king having absolute power has gone and gone forever. Know this and know peace. Events have overtaken his claim. For Example, Ogbomoso fought many wars on their own and that save many Yoruba cities and the reason for making the town attained the position it found itself today.
Baba thank you for nailing it on the head . Baba Adeboye has no right to Crown our Oba and all Obas are for Isese .Our Tradition is Isese for Crowning any King .True talk ,thank you sir .Traditional Worship is Obas Religion
Not only that that we have a king in Ogbomoso, we have a good king. In 1976 Brigader David Jemibewon elevated the stool of Soun and Olubadan, the elevation was done because of heroic contributions of the two communities against the invasion of Fulani Jihadist in 19th Century from Sokoto to the south. The great feat and achievements brought about the consideration and eventual recommendation for historical elevation, I would have love if you mentioned Ibadan but you single out Ogbomoso's stool elevation and if you did you might likely be usher out of the studio. Moreover, You said the successive king has always been an Isese religion, this is another false. The late Oba Ajagungbade was a devout Muslim and he ruled from 1973- 2021( 48 years on the throne) Every religion can become a king in Ogbomoso. The late Ajagungbade, the soun of Ogbomoso, Alafin and even Alake have once knelt in Church before so why single out Oba Ghandi If you are a traditionalist or Isese, I would advise you to promote it and make it attractive rather than descrating the revered stool of Ogbomoso. Anyway I don't blame you I blame the Mumu presenter who gave you the platform to discuss the issue on air
