In all his years of coaching, including winning 2 Rose Bowls and finishing only 8-3 this year, when asked his greatest win, he says without hesitation "Ohio State 1969".
Woody said the Offense made every mistake it could possibly make in second half.Loss wouldn't have been so bad except Hayes scrapped the pass the next season. The conservative approach cost Ohio State 71 Rose Bowl
The seeds for this Michigan win were planted the year before when Woody Hayes intentionally ran up the score, going for two points on the last touchdown instead of kicking the extra point in a 50-14 win. When asked why he went for two points on the conversion, Hayes replied, "Because I couldn't go for three". The blowout though, resulted in Michigan firing its coach and replacing him with Schembechler, who not only beat Hayes the next year, but beat Hayes in the last three meetings while not giving up a single touchdown. During the ten years they squared off, Schembechler held the edge 5-4-1.
Woody and Bo were actually good friends. And we find out after Woody passed away that Bo and Woody set all this rivalry stuff up behind the scenes. Just how great were those two to make it happen! Still to this day, greatest rivalry in all of sports.
No doubt! When he went for two that really rubbed Michigan’s noses and Michigan didn’t forget that. Especially when they ask him why he went for two, and he replied because I couldn’t go for three. Woody got paid back big-time.
2021 I wasn’t even going to watch- I woke up in California and turned it on, saw the snow and the cold which I thought might give M an advantage on the ground. But the crowd. Wow. There was a lot of energy in that stadium it was not the cocktails on the golf course in pregame kind of crowd. They were not sitting on their hands; Michigan Stadium was like a hungry animal.
This video was incomplete in that it missed the greatest highlight of the entire game, Tom Darden leaping over the back of an OSU receiver for the interception that slammed to door on the final hopes of the Buckeyes. The interception was great play by Darden in what was basically a 50-50 pass, but Woody totally lost his mind when no flags were tossed, and stumbled over to the first down markers and completely disintegrated them in a prolonged fit of apoplectic rage, his face a shade OSU crimson and a contorted mask of screaming rage, arms and legs flailing in all directions at once, pieces of yardstick tossed this way and that way, and everybody nearby on the Buckeye side of the field cowering from him rather than trying to rein him in. He knew that was the end right then and there. And so did we, up in the stands. It was glorius! The Team of the Century ends its season as The Turnover Machine of the Century. And, no, the Buckeyes did not "beat themselves". They had never all season played a team with a defensive front seven that could contain the Buckeue run game. nor had they ever been forced to go to the passing game to come from behind. They were stripped bare to reveal they had no effective passing game unless the opponent had nine men in the box to stop the run.
Kenneth Kalls Of course what was true then is definitely not today as we have seen in most OSU- Michigan games in the past 20 years, such as yesterday.
@@waheisel Your reply sent me looking for video of what I described, and it turns out I had misremembered events. It was the 1971 game where Darden made the great leaping interception and Hayes threw his tantrum. th-cam.com/video/r6G4XolI2zQ/w-d-xo.html I especially like how destroying one first down marker wasn't enough to satisfy Woody's rage. He had to saunter ten yards downfield and destroy the other, with the official holding the yardstick earnestly trying to protect its structural integrity.

I n 1969 I was 17, never watch any football. But I stop for the moment to watch that game. I have never stop since. Yea as a Michigan fan I hated Woody. Not so much now. What I wouldn’t give to have that wonderful revival again! To see that old man again, to see his protégé Bo back out there. I’m soooo thankful I lived through that time. What great history. Now it is history, I don’t think in my time I’ll see MICHIGAN return to its glory days? But then football is no longer what it once was. I’ed rather watch a cross country meet. Individual have to give their best. May Michigan never give into the political elite. I would rather we become a loser program. F them go blue! (John B).
@easyeddie771 The 60's were a lower scoring era. If you beat somebody by three touchdowns that was alot. That Ohio State team had been pounding teams like a modern powerhouse. They'd outscored their opponents 371-69 in 8 games, (46-9). Their closest game had been 41-14. They'd won 22 in a row and were going for a second straight national title. They'd beaten Michigan 50-14 the year before. People were calling them the greatest team ever.
8 OSU wins verses 1 win by Michigan in since you posted. This Saturday, if Michigan loses, they need to fire Harbaugh. Makes way to much money and can't win a big one.
And then MU went on to another natty.......uh no. Just like all their wins against OSU never amounted to anything. Unless you wanna count that 1/2 in 97. 74 years and counting without an outright title. Mediocre U. Most overrated college football.
@rob scotney and I wouldn't really count 1970 for OSU. 1970 was Nebraska. The Huskers swept all the major polls except for the Coaches, which didn't vote after the bowl games during that time.
My dad was on the sideline on the Michigan coaching staff ! 💪🏽
Was he with Bo the Pedophile-enabler?
I went to a 1971 kids' camp at Mich Stadium. Stobart, Bo & other famous coaches were there. Met Billy Taylor, then my fav' cfb player.

Michigan didn't win. Ohio State beat themselves.
@Jon Shonebarger Woody "cause I couldn't go for three" Hayes beat himself?
Okay...if you insist....
Earle Bruce had a point when he said 9-3 is a good record 👏👌👍🤣😳

Going to the game on Saturday. I saw the line on the OSU game and had to watch this to cheer myself up
Didn't quite work ....
Still the greatest Michigan game of the 20th Century.
For sheer intensity, this still has to be the ultimate Michigan win over TSDS.
However, 2021 come's pretty close.
Show some respect. They're NOT called TSDS. They're called "Ohio"
