It is 10/26/23 and my Catasetum still has green leaves. I lost one leaf to yellowing and let it fall on its own. I watered according to the firmness of the bulbs after that, sometimes daily. It has had fertilizer, and I thought the last major fertilizing would be over two weeks ago, but now I am thinking about giving it another. I really need this video since I have never taken care of a Catasetum before. There are no spikes, it has good roots and it’s kept in a warm, humid place with artificial bright lighting. Wish me luck.
I have 2 , one is just going into “hibernation “ ( I only got a single flower, but since it arrived last year with a rotten back bulb I think I was lucky for the one)and one hasn’t been watered in3 months and just started a new growth. Wondering if I should repot now or wait to see root growth first. Also hope I didn’t hurt new growth when I sprayed systemic insecticide due to a small outbreak in my grow room. I think it’s ok and figured it would probably end up worse if I didn’t spray so now I am crossing my fingers.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I've got a catasetum tabulare that takes forever to go dormant and then starts growing soon after. If I dont water it over the wi ter, I loose pseudobulbs to the rot that gets on orchids when they get too dry so I water it a little bit occasionally during winter. I suspect that in nature, this one might get some intermittent sprinkles, but as long as it has leaves, I give it a bit of water.
Agreed, otherwise the older bulbs dessicate too quickly. I think they need some sort of mist or a little moisture to keep them going through the winter. The 100% dry spell is a mistake. I have lost entire plants by not watering at all especially smaller plants as the bulbs just disappear.
Paula from Mexico. I ordered two Catasetums in January, they came the sometime in March. My first ones, I knew they went dormant for winter. So because the hottest months here start in April to June and I didn’t know where they were at, being one still had leaves. I put outside in the warmth and started to water them a week or two after they came. One came still had leaves the other didn’t. The didn’t now has a new growth of 4”. No roots yet. I just learned that watering was a big mistake. I watered maybe 3 weeks. Now do I stop and wait till roots or what? I am think yes and repot now, to get rid of maybe wet medium. What do you think I should do??????? One still has leaves. They are Catasetum pileatum. ’Jumbo Green Gold’ the other is Cycnodes Taiwan Gold ‘Orange’.....
So first off your calendar has nothing to do with the orchids internal clock and that is all that matters…if both plants are actively growing new roots that’s great…I’d cut back to a minimum of misting and keep them in a very humid environment with great air movement. This way they will stay moist so you don’t have to water them very much.yet they can be moist. You need to allow the plant growth to catch up to your treatment…so how will you know? When the nee roots are young when wet they don’t seem to absorb water. When you notice they darken right away it’s time to water. roots likely will be massing and a strong 3-5 inch pseudo bulb will have developed.
