    -- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
    -- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

    That "news" segment at the end is actually a brilliant idea. Gets more people to watch till the end than bloopers ever did and also gives people something to be excited about. I just hope that any promises are things that are already set up rather than things you still need to do work on - better to announce hopes that don't pan out than promise exciting things that get derailed by life 😅 looking forward to seeing vs again! 😁

    Known errors:
    1) Accuracy/Evasion calculations. When Snubbull's accuracy is lowered or the enemy's evasion is boosted I am using the generation 1 values to recalculate accuracy. For example, -1 accuracy gives a 0.66 multiplier where as in generation 2 it gives a 0.75 multiplier. Thanks to
    @JoaoFerreira-pj1uc for catching this.
    2) 5:11 - I said Teddiursa, meant to say Snubbull

    Before watching:
    Really high attack for a first stage pokemon and solid defense and HP. Also, a Normal Type that can learn strong physical normal moves. And the elemental punches which can give some coverage if needed. And it learns Bite and Lick early on, so not even the Ghosts will be a problem.
    My prediction is that Snubbull is actually really good! You will run into a problem with Blue and Red, because you‘ll be too underleveled, since you‘ll get there „too quickly“ but aside from that I really don‘t see many real obstacles. And even the underleveled thing might not be the biggest problem since it levels fast.
    My guess is upper mid-tier which is going to be really good for a first stage pokemon.
    After watching:
    Completely missed how similar Snubbull is to Teddiursa.
    But yeah, unsurprisingly, this is a really strong first stage pokemon. And it just has so many tools to work with. Zero resets is still surprising! Badass little dog! So, I‘m actually still surprised that it didn‘t get a higher rank.

    My predictions for the starter Vs videos:
    Venusaur will crush Meganium. Meganium is bulkier, but Venusaur is still plenty bulky and is much more offensively potent. Meganium will still do okay overall, but I think Venusaur is going to be exceptional.
    Charizard and Typhlosion have literally identical stats. So it comes down to how helpful the Flying typing is for Zard, and how much having Thunder Punch matters for Typhlosion. I think Thunder Punch is a big enough advantage, especially given how early you get it, that Typhlosion has the edge, but I think they'll both be solid.
    I don't remember how Feraligatr's stats are distributed, but its Special Attack being lower than Blastoise's is a notable disadvantage. I think Blastoise will probably win, but Gatr has a chance. I think they'll both be quite good.
    ETA: I recently watched a challenge run of HGSS that reminded me just how hostile Johto is to Grass types. They match up very poorly against all of Falkner, Bugsy, Morty, Jasmine, Pryce, Clair, Will, Koga, Karen, and Lance. Blue and Red are slightly less painful for Grass types, but not by that much. So Venusaur probably actually won't be nearly as good as I initially thought. And Meganium is probably going to struggle big time.

    Hey Scott. Just wanted to give you a bit of a programming lesson. Now, I know most of your experience is with Javascript so this isn't especially relevant for you. But in many programming languages, data is explicitly assigned to a particular type. In the case of Pokémon, all of the main games use integers in all of their damage calculations, and there's a concept called integer arithmetic. Which is to say, if you do a division function on integers, it *acts* as a floor function, but is not actually a floor function. It's just a consequence of performing a rational mathematical operation on something that only accepts discrete integers as inputs and outputs.
    Of course, in Javascript, basically all numbers are floating point numbers, meaning they have decimals, so to force it to act like the pokémon damage calculation, you have to use a floor function. I love your content. Keep it up my man. Can't wait for the skitty playthrough!

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did already know this. All of my calculations have these math.floor functions as a part of their logic!

    Blastoise vs Feraligatr? That's an interesting one I didn't expect. The starter 3 way is an is win for Gatr over Typhlosion and Meganium, but putting it against the previous water starter in a game that heavily favors water types could make things close.

    I'm not too shocked that Snubbull ended up doing pretty well, it's decently strong for a 1st stage pokemon and there isn't very much difference between 30 and 40 base speed as you're slow either way.
    In terms of the starter comparisions, I think they'll go this way.
    Meganium vs Venusaur, Meganium gets Razor Leaf way earlier and learns body slam and earthquake. Venusaur does get growth at level 41 though and does learn leech seed early on and even the smallest bit of chip damage per turn is huge. Meganium does have the better moveset though
    Charizard vs Typhlosion, Typhlosion doesn't even learn flamethrower until level 60. Meanwhile Charizard gets it at level 34 or something. They do have the same stat spreads and similar TM learnsets so I guess it comes down to Typhlosion learning rollout & thunderpunch via tm whereas Charizard learns dragonbreath by tm and wing attack by level up.
    Feraligatr vs Blastoise, I'm sorry but Feraligatr's learnset is so bad. At best it has a stronger earthquake and it learns slash at level 38 but it learns nothing good to take advantage of its physical attack.

    I'll be honest I kind of figured Snubbull would end up being a little better than Teddiursa in the long run, and I think it would have been in Generation I for sure. Yes, it has slightly worse stats, but growth rate ends up being super important after all. But with Red...I'm wondering if that's even true. For first stage Pokemon you have to train to such a high level I think it might end up evening things out.
    But I don't know if I'm still convinced. I ended up taking a gander at the Teddiursa video to refresh myself again on how Teddiursa did, and Teddiursa beat Red at Level 83, but didn't use Curse at all. Now it is a bit faster at Level 83 than Snubbull was at Level 90, but all you need is 149 Speed to outspeed the Venusaur, so I'm wondering if doing a similar strategy, eschewing Curse and the Quick Claw for Leftovers and Sleep Talk would have resulted in needing less leveling in Mt. Silver and ultimately a better time. Obviously I think you probably considered this but something in my brain is just like "Can this be pushed farther". They're just so similar to each other as Pokemon after all.
    Ultimately, I still think you did a good job and a 4 minute difference isn't actually that bad! I'm just trying to bounce off ideas, so hopefully I don't come off too harsh about it.

  • @lenlimbo
    @lenlimbo ปีที่แล้ว

    At this point, without you having released (maybe even recorded) any of the three versus, I'm gonna make a prediction:
    The winners are going to be Venusaur, Typhlosion and Feraligatr.
    Venusaur is easy, it is a beast of a starter, while Meganium... isn't. Their bulk is actually not that different, but Venusaur has a better offensive power, and the poison type protects it from many threats that Meganium is going to suffer from. It also has a better general moveset (I MAY be mixing with later gens) although fair is fair, Meganium should get razor leaf when Venusaur is still rocking vine whip, so that's one point for the flower brontosaurus.
    ...Okay, I checked and Meganium gets Earthquake while Venusaur doesn't... but Venusaur still has that poison typing, 20 more points in special attack and access to sleep powder AND growth, not to mention leech seed for passive damage and recovery, if needed, so still giving it to the og grass starter, but not by as much as I originally thought. Will may be a problem for Venusaur, but Koga and the Team Rocket are going to be a joke, and Bugsy won't destroy it with Fury Cutter, unlike Meganium.
    Typhlosion vs Charizard is actually a tough versus in my mind. They have the same BST, and I mean THE SAME, not just the same total, so it comes to Charizard being flying type. It helps it against Chuck and Bruno (to a degree, at least, against Bruno, because those Rock Slides from Onix and Machamp are going to HURT), but it makes it weaker than Typhlosion against Pryce, Surge, Brock, Whitney's Miltank, half of Lance's team and Red's Pikachu (although Pikachu may fall against a single Earthquake, so we'll see).Anything with rock, ice or electric moves, really. So ultimately, it is worse being flying than not, for a fire mon.
    Blastoise vs Feraligatr match is a matter of who is the better offensive mon. Both have a similar sp. atk (Blastoise is a bit better), Feraligatr actually has a better physical bulk (same defense, but more hp), both have the same speed, Feraligatr has a way better atk and a worse sp def. The thing is, most of the things that will threaten Feraligatr from the special side WILL fear his physical might. As with Typhlosion vs Charizard, it is a close match, but while Blastoise has a better standing power against certain threats (Red's pikachu, Lance's Thunder Dragonite, Surge, Erika), Feraligatr is going to get some head up against... well, pretty much anything else, and that assumes that Feraligatr is going to get some resets that Blastoise won't, it may very well NOT.

    It doesn't add too much, but have you ever considered starting the game at night? That way in early game you have the ability to fight the optional policemen on the "goldenrod routes" for additional early game exp.

    I think some of your times might improve a bit if you cut back on elemental punch usage for pokemon with bad sp atk in the early to mid game. I get that super effective damage is enticing, but Snubull's sp atk is wayyyy worse than its physical attack, so it's almost always doing more with a normal effective stab headbutt than a super effective elemental punch. For example, you had to 2 shot Pryce's seel with thunder punch when headbutt would have easily OHKO'd.

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. Agreed. I did cut back on elemental moves in the second run.

    With your much higher atk than Sp atk and Aerodactyl's lower physical defense, would Shadow Ball possibly do more than Ice Punch to it? Or maybe it would be about the same amount. Just curious how that damage would work out

    • @Chronoflation
      @Chronoflation ปีที่แล้ว

      If it can't one hit, then at least the freeze chance makes ice punch better, but maybe

    Something I notice in your gen 2 videos is that you always go up the route to talk to Floria before you beat Whitney. I don't think you have to do this. I always just go talk to the lady watering her flowers after I beat whitney and she just gives me the squirtbottle. I usually am playing silver, and its been a while since I did that event in crystal, but goldenrod is usually the center where I start trading with other games, so I don't go north to grind and leave them for later grinding and coast on traded pokemon. Since your doing a speed challenge, I imagine not talking to floria would save you a couple of minutes on each run.

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They changed it in Crystal. You do have to go north in this game, but in Silver you can just get the squirtbottle right away.

    If you are one point slower, and also only get a roll with one of your attacks, then why not use just one or two rare candies?
    I know you like saving them, but it could still save time overall maybe?

    • @ScottsThoughtsPokemon
      @ScottsThoughtsPokemon  ปีที่แล้ว

      In the case of a final evolution, I would do that. But the fear of Red is strong with a first-stage Pokemon...

    • @gamer19191
      @gamer19191 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Well if it was one rare candy lets say in order to out speed, then you have to weigh whether its faster to have multiple resets, or to level up once at around level 80.
      As in, does the time loss from multiple resets amount to more than the time loss from leveling once at a high level.
