    There was a brief stretch from 1992-1993 where that Williams was so dominant that the FIA had to pretty much outlaw everything on that car just to provide competition. Without them intervening that ultimate dominance of winning virtually every race would have certainly gone for another 2-3 years. That being said from 1992 -1997 they won 5 wcc and came in 2nd in 1995. Should have been a worthy addition to this list. Good video tho.

      that's why it's in the original survey remember? I had the same thought. there were far too many moving variables after inputting the data. they are in the original model. if that's the case, you should be arguing for honda with tag engines too. it gets wild haha. there's too many driver changes. there's multiple notable technical changes. they dominated for many reasons and none of them had much to do with eachother. but I made a 50 minute video about williams so I had zero qualms leaving them out considering just this month the extensive coverage i've given them

    • @kingsleyndam
      @kingsleyndam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Daniel Araya sadly frank williams couldn’t care less about drivers. Any first rate top driver was somehow pushed out of the team if they were deemed too large of a factor. The only time he actually paid for top rated drivers is when he hired Prost then summarily pushed him out by hiring Senna who sadly passed away a few races into his Williams tenure. All others were pushed out of the team as they were approaching or were at the peak of the careers. SMH

Hamilton was so scared of him in 2015, if he had a bit better car, who knows what couldve had happen. Bottas is even worse than Rosberg, can't compare to Vettel, not even on Kimi's level. Ferrari in 2017 made a lot of mistakes which ruined his chances, Malaysia, Japan spark plug DNF, Great Britain, Belgium and Italy lacking power, only mistake Vettel had that season was Singapore. 2018 they put a lot of pressure on him, he was so good in the first half of the season till Germany mistake, even after in Belgium, Italy was unlucky with Hamilton going outside of him, and then they ruined the car till Mexico, which is 2-3 more races lost. bingo. problem is the engine regs don't deviate as much. not enough to change winners. williams went from 7th to 1 to 5th haha. honda to judd to renault. will never happen today. so unless they change aero, power is staying right where it is. and no one is magically going to sprout their works wings. unless it's aston. but customer teams are doomed. I personally see Renault and Ferrari as being positioned the best. the next regs are going to rely on basically spending nothing a year or goodbye williams./small teams. @CrankyYankeeF1 Too much emphasis is placed on the engines. Both mercedes and Williams run the same unit - one wins, while the other is off the pace. The same is true with renault powered redbull and the works team. Same thing with 2019 mclaren and renault. The difference in motor is less than a %, ferrari excluded... for reasons. Chassis and aero is much more important and mercedes has shown to be proficient at both.

    I know we're talking about eras here, so I get why the number of years of domination wasn't a large factor, but i think it's important at least to note how long Mercedes's domination has lasted, too. Consistency is definitely a factor in maintaining dominance, and the fact that Mercedes has dominated for the better part of a decade is huge when you consider how long (or short, by comparison) the other stretches noted in this video lasted. Good video, man. Love your work

      Did you read a comment about this somewhere on the channel? I’ve only said it like 3x in comments maybe ever. Eerily spot on with my dream content to produce. It’s been on my list for like a year hahaha. Maybe that’s a sign. But Lewis is literally the #1 thing I want to tackle. What if Prost stayed at McLaren? I think Ayrton would still be alive. Honda wouldn’t have left. The options are endless. Problem is when I write it, it requires a great deal of patience and benefit of the doubt from everyone . Until I did this very last video, I hadn’t produced enough proving my undeniable objectivity. I may be in a place now that I’ll be able to publish that in good conscious. It truly would be incredible content like no one has seen! Have you seen the alternative history TH-cam channel? I got that idea adapted from his content if Germany won WW2. I don’t think I moved after the video was done playing for 45 minutes just thinking hahaha

    20:10 This is such a good point that I hadn't seen fully until you mentioned it. 6 champion drivers, what a line up! Red Bull didn't seem as dominant as it could have been because the other drivers (mainly Hamilton, Alonso and Button) were able to give Red Bull a run for their money even in slower cars. I completely forgot how dominant Lewis & Nico were, I don't think people can see that Mercedes aren't as dominant as they used to be because of Hamilton, his performance hasn't dropped at all.

      Senna was unhappy with only outpointing a brilliant F1 veteran De Angelis by 10% and being up 10-6 in qualifying with a 0.68 second margin. So they hired drivers nearly 4 seconds slower than him in Nakijama and Dumfries. Ayrton outscored them by 1100%! Warwick who would likely be a second slower and score half the points was too strong for Senna. Berger...though no Prost...was by far the strongest driver Ayrton had willingly brought to a team. Alain wanted Senna as he relished competition. Even Stefan Johansson(Prosts weakest teammate)was miles faster than Nakijama and the Earl of Bute(AKA Dumfries)

      @@adampetten5349that's right. Apparently Senna said that he didn't want Warwick join Lotus. Not because he didn't like him, on the contrary, everyone liked Derek in F1. It was probably due to him being an established driver and would be very competitive in the right car. He would have won a lot of races when he was at Renault, if they'd had a reliable car.

    Thorough, very thorough. Incredibly difficult arguing with your conclusions but here we go. I feel the mercedes era should be split into two segments. 14-16 and 17-today. The sport has gone through significant changes during that time. They continue to win, but the margins are small.
    Redbull is an interesting one. The car at times were dominant but it was mostly down to clever interpretation of the rules rather than holistically. First the blown technology, then the critical 2013 tire change rules post silverstone, which saw vettel disappeared over the horizon. Their unreliability can be traced directly to Adrian's uncompromising design philosophy. It was the same at mclaren with kimi. With a proper number 2, and better reliability, they would've been a force. The pairing of Daniel and max remains their strongest line-up, unfortunately unreliability destroyed what could have been.
    Glad you pointed out of incredibly dominant the 88' mclaren was, often seconds faster than 2nd place over a lap. There's no doubt Prost and Senna were the drivers of the era but that car was insane.
    Cannot comment on the Ferrari era, as I haven't watched it. What I do know, is they enjoyed significant budgetary benefits among other things.
    Lastly, I don't think people adequate gauge just how good Bottas is. They also underestimate just how much Hamilton has improved over the years. Drivers are often seen as static entities, but in reality they grow, improve and change. Lewis has always been fast but technically weak. He relied too heavily on his talent rather than the engineers around him. The partnership of Nico, the tutelage of Niki changed that. Contrary to what many believe, he's much more Prost than Senna. He's also the trailblazer for the following generation of drivers. They're not only younger than ever, but are more outgoing, charming and willing to express themselves in ways once thought unacceptable. All have clothing lines, and outside interests. And though few admit it, they all look up to him.
    In the end, I largely agree with you. Mercedes as an entity is the best team in f1 history. Like their star driver, they continual improve upon their weaknesses becoming stronger. I wouldn't hold my breath hoping the 2022 regs changes much. Such a well oiled organisation will be successful regardless of technical changes. Only infighting will see that team's demise. Judging from the testimony of John Owen, Aldo Costa, and James Allison along with Wolf, that's hardly likely.
    Top job. Top Job. Excellent, exquisite. I enjoy every millisecond. Ravenous for more.

      As always great going through your thoughts process. I don’t think it’s even possible to make this yet but you make a good point on era. There’s not enough room left in the technical ceiling to change enough for another team to exploit. The turbo to non turbo is drastic. The banning of ground effects is drastic. Going back to turbo since the MP4/ monster with hybrid was even drastic. Engines truly are at the whims of the global partner . F1 can’t make a power decision without political input. Merc is going to make a fuel hungry monster anymore considering their emphasis with road cars is environmentally conscious. The partnership of f1 to consumer cars has always been symbiotic. But if something had to give it feels like it’s F1 here. So then if power is going to be run by OEMs, customer cars are fucked. Unless you DRAMATICALLY change aero again. But doesn’t it feel we’ve cornered the teams into a box with the current business modes so that no matter what you change, the teams with the established teams will always adapt? I miss when Chapman was running and gunning or the true independents would pull a year out of their ass. I really do think major aero changes are needed. And not the sake ones that will never happen. They need to get more drastic. Otherwise limiting power and money, it only squeezes small teams further. Ironically I think this permanently cuts off Williams from recovering. The only third option is likely best but they won’t do it. Make the cars literally just about equal. Now that changes commercially everything I get it but what options do we have? Idk I’m cynical but you have your thoughts provoking comment to thanks for that haha cheers my friend

    • @Bahamuttiamat
      @Bahamuttiamat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no clear path through this molasses because f1 is now world class. Any entity that dips into the billions automatically becomes a slave to the market and sadly politics. F1 is beholden to the car industry and that is currently a mess. Maybe this virus is the best thing for a radical shake up that our sport desperately needs. Finances has always been a mess because the sport has grown faster than it's governing body and the selfish needs of its various stakeholders.
      If we go spec, we'll lose many manufacturers, the racing might improve but it wouldn't be an engineering challenge just a purely advertising business a la formula E. More show than go. That might be fine for some, but the engineer fascinates me.
      Going radical with engines, aero or what ever will only incur new ever increasing expenses. Thankfully, the shutdown has given us and the stakeholders more than enough time to think it over.

    I think this video settles the argument of " these drivers won the championship because of the car " ....
    Thats because we can see from the data that all the championship winning drivers Ham , Seb , Michael and Senna were the consistent ones which actually made most of the teams points , though yes the second driver did contribute alot but saying that they won because of " the one who designed the car " is just bullcrap ... Like you said for ferrari and red bull that they did not always have the best car ( mercedes and mclaren maybe not so much ) but they always got the points and race wins and it was these drivers who did that .... I know the motive of this video is different but i think this is the best example for people to see stats wise why these drivers are considered greats and better than their teammates ....

      yeah I could't take it too far - but I've made it no secret what vettel did was one of the most impressive things we'll see. at times, he had the third worst car. when it was together, it was great. but perfect proof i posed on twitter and apparently broke it - how can it be ALL car AND webber also be considered such a good driver? for the record, mark is a great driver. but he never scored P2. in the same car. mostly the same. not once. yet vettel drove by himself to four titles. my 2012 and 2010 showcase I try to pay underhand tribute there but I think you have a good take. of course I can't say all of that but all these guys drove alone mostly. it's astounding how even michael fought kimi and montoya off. 2002 and 2004 were power years but I will remember michael most for his comeback in 2001 winning four straight. gave me chills bc seb had to do it in 2012 to beat alonso when he went 125/125 in asia. in the comments, that's something I can admit I want people to face square on but want to present it by the data. these drivers are other worldly talented

    Great Video as always (It cured my boredom and lack of F1, thanks!), but I feel this video more so compares the dominant drivers than teams... What I took away most from the video is that Sebastian Vettel is given less credit than he deserves for winning world titles in one of the most competitive seasons! If you look back into the video a key thing that was there with all the other constructor's dominant runs except Red Bull's is that their competition was either ill-prepared for regulation changes or the new drivers had just dropped in who lacked experience... which leads to an uncompetitive grid! The fact that amazes me is that Vettel single handedly beat not only his team mate but even the entire competition! and for 4 straight years (2013 saw one hell of a monster!)! I don't care if people believe that Vettel is now dead, but in my opinion, that era of Vettel (at least the 2013 year if not the other 3 years as well...) is the best driver the world has seen yet (I don't care if Hamilton wins a 1000 WDCs, the fact is he couldn't win against that Vettel)... And that is why I believe that someday we will once again see that Vettel again!

      @Prithvidiamond hmmm interesting comment. Vettel is a very narrow driver. He is very fast but like kimi, only in very specific dynamic cars. The blown redbulls fit him to a tee. That said, your "monster 2013" vettel was the result of a very specific regulatory change. Namely the changing of the tires post silverstone blow ups.
      He barely beat Webber in 2010, in fact only led in the final race. The 2011 redbulls were absolute monsters, some of the most dominant cars f1 had ever seen. All bar 1 pole that year. IMO 2012 was his best season, it was close and he clinched it. That said, since the start of the hybrid era he's faulted. Why? Both Alonso and Hamilton have shined regardless of what they're driving. Vettel not so much, bested convincingly by Daniel and charles.
      I feel the hate he gets is unwarranted. He's still an amazing drivers but even in his heyday was inferior to lewis and fernando.

    • @Bahamuttiamat

      There's a difference, both lewis and fernando lost to JB. It's not only the points score but how? Lewis had many dnf's that year, countless incidents with massa. He didn't lose because he was slower or JB out drove him. Daniel definitely outdrove Seb. It was embarrassing. The same thing with nico and lewis. Nico won the championship but by every measure he was the inferior driver of the two (less wins, poles, podiums while starting on the front row at every race bar one (austria).
      Well yes, losing to your teammate does undermine your skill and performance because it the only other driver that shares the same car. Whenever Seb is partnered with a young hotshot, he loses.

    I apologize if this was mentioned in the video and I just didn't catch it, but the Hamilton/Rosberg dominance can also be attributed to that pairing of drivers occurring during the first three years of the hybrid era, which Mercedes was clearly more prepared for than every other team. In 2017, following Nico's exit from the sport, other teams had had plenty of time to catch up, and though I do believe Rosberg would've fared better than Bottas for the past three seasons, I think it's important to note (although it obviously does not change statistics).

    • @Bahamuttiamat
      @Bahamuttiamat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I feel this is a point not emphasised enough. The token system definitely gave mercedes an advantage in 2014, but by 2015 ferrari was vastly improved. Rosberg often appears statistically better than bottas because he drove in an era with stifling mercedes dominance. I don't think Nico would perform any better post 2017 relative to bottas.

      100%, very surprised this isn't mentioned considering how much implied comparison is made between Bottas and Rosberg! For me, Rosberg is clearly the better driver of those two. Lewis didn't decline. you'd have a point if they both did. they didn't. it seems as though you're adding information but it sounds emotional. that's perfectly fine if you add it, I personally can't do that for obvious reasons. I don't believe the start of the era had anything at all to do with it. For some reason, people apologize for Bottas failing to win a single race. not 1? that's not the other cars picking up. as far as data goes, it's clear as day. But if there's other information, you should factor it in! I just can't that's all but this isn't the end all be all analysis I hope you find places to input any relevant data that can prove what you just said!
