- A Retro-View tribute to producer-director Roger Corman & author historian Lee Gambin, two important figures in the area of film-making and film culture who left behind a wide physical media legacy, including the two 1970 cult films on blu-ray discussed here: Corman's unique dystopic satire GAS-S-S-S and the obscure anti-drug drama THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR (audio commentary by Lee Gambin). Both available on excellent releases from Signal One and Indicator. Pick them up in memory of Roger and Lee.
Thank YOU for making these! Brilliant
Thank you so much for honouring my friend Lee Gambin in such a meaningful way. It both breaks my heart and makes my heart swell with pride to see the focus here shared between him and Mr. Corman. Lee was a treasure to Melbourne audiences with his regular Cinemaniacs screenings and presentations, his recommendations on what to see and read, but most of all he was a devoted friend to those he loved. His life has left an indelible mark on those who loved him, and the silence of his absence is deafening. He gave us so much … Melbourne will never be the same again. Thank you again, sir, for honouring my dear friend Lee.
Thank you for honoring Lee! He belongs with Corman in cine-spirit. I wish I could have met him in person at a Cinemaniacs show. He seemed like he had a full life that touched many people. And we have his words forever. Thanks for Retro-Viewing.
Part of Corman's genius was that, no matter how silly a script or a premise might have been,. he always took it seriously and produced a film that far surpassed what might have been expected otherwise.
He was interested in the 1960s culture from a distance and his economical style is part of his style and charm. Thanks for retro-viewing.
Great advice at the end. I still have dozens of VHS cassettes and a 35mm trailer of one of my favorite films, Caligula. I know, I know... Some people have odd taste. 🎥
I have a few boxes of recorded vhs I need to upload(Bond films on ABC etc). And I own the 35mm trailer for SKIDOO so...
Sad news indeed. A true pioneer of film who launched so many careers and hugely influenced filmmaking and filmmakers to this day. While a lot of his films weren't "great" many are still better than most of the big-budget schlock churned out today. Studios could learn something from him. RIP Roger....
Even when he worked briefly for Fox he couldn't stand their waste! He really does have a distinct style when he's engaged with the material. Thanks for retro-viewing!
So David Greene started the decade with The People Next Door and ended it with Airport '79: The Concorde?
Fun movie but dated. I always think of 1970's Glen and Randa when someone brings up Gas. That or ZPG also from 1970 if I'm not wrong.
All those films are interesting to me because of when they came out. To me, they're counter-cultural artifacts.
