  • In this video, I give you some tips and tricks for teaching practices that will help you not only be an awesome teacher but will also help you do well when your assistant principal or principal does an informal walk-through on your class.
We discuss in this video working bell-to-bell, using objectives, asking the right questions, giving students wait time, compliance vs engagement, and more.

I do this at my school and the veteran teachers say I am doing too much. I teach bell to bell and I prefer this method because it also keeps the kids engaged the minute they walk into the classroom and the moment the bell rings to end the class. That also means I don't have a moment to sit down but then my day goes by super fast.

Sounds like you're doing a great job. Bell-to-bell teaching is important. And yes, days FLY by when you teach this way. My principal did a presentation once to show how much we waste when we allow students to pack up 5 min before the bell. If you let students pack up 5 min before the end of every class, that's 35 min per day (if they have 7 classes). That's 175 min every week wasted. That's 6300 min or 105 hours per school year wasted. And that's just 5 min. Some people let their kids pack up 10 min before the bell rings. I need to do a video on this.
Keep doing what you're doing. You are doing the right thing :)

How do you come up with higher level critical thinking questions?

A good way to reference Webbs depth of knowledge. Here is a good article for that www.edutopia.org/blog/webbs-depth-knowledge-increase-rigor-gerald-aungst
You can also simply ask follow up questions like "why?" "What makes you say that?" "How did you come up with that answer?" "here in the book did you see that?" How does that happen?"
      Hope that helps. Thanks!
