Lyrics:
Smoke detector, smoke detector
All you need to do is protect her
Smoke detector
Smoke detector, smoke detector
Blink and bless her and let her rest
Don’t let my memory dissolve
Make a list of your loved ones in order of height
Laugh at the blackbirds in the knack of the night
Forgive all the favorites in your phone
Imagine yourself completely alone
Sit in the backyard in my pharmacy slippers
At least I’m not on the roof anymore
In a year or so I hope nobody remembers
This run of episodes of my time on the floor
Need to recharge, light from the stars
Won’t really reach anything will it?
Binary capsules of all human culture
History and science, and headless sculptures
Stories of monkeys and digital religions
Like life on a note of the last living pigeon
Smoke detector, smoke detector
All you need to do is protect her
Smoke detector
Smoke detector, smoke detector
Blink and bless her and let her rest
Don’t let my memory dissolve
I’ll get better, I’ll fluff the feathers
I’ll punch in the numbers and I’ll enter the letters
Why don’t you let me lay here and listen to the distant sirens?
Wonder why they have a dog in the driver’s seat
With a red helmet and his head out the window
It’s getting closer no matter where we go
Brush your teeth and write your name
On the bottom of brick under the window pane
Sift through the slush and the ash and the dust
For whatever stands out for whatever reason
If it’s a laugh or a rush a remembered feeling
You don’t know it means but you don’t want to leave it
Put it in a plastic bag and put it in a pocket
Hang it on a hanger and put it in a closet
You’ll know where it is whenever you need it
I make a good argument, admit it
You don’t know how much I love you, do you?
You don’t know how much I love you, do you?
Just try to remember the best of us
Just try to remember the best of us
Make a list of your loved ones in order of height
Laugh at the blackbirds in the black of the night
Forgive all the favorites in your phone
Imagine yourself completely alone
Sit in the backyard in my pharmacy slippers
At least I’m not on the roof anymore

This is one of the best songs they've ever made holy fuck
I hope they keep going with this sound on the next album, just go nuts
This song has more energy in it than the entire last album combined, Bryan absolutely shines here
_Deep end_ is also a very strong song
Best song on the album. Loved it the second it started.
This is freaking insane !! I checked thrice to see how much was left of the song and got excited every time. Not in Kansas on acid
one of the best national songs, instantly. wow!
From “Sad dads” to “lonely fire alarm designers”. Only the national write songs for us.
probably their best track since Nobody else will be there. Really solid album, love to hear the band back in form
Best song of their last 2 LP's in my opinion!
Waking up to an unexpected brand new album by The National on a Monday morning. Can life get any better?
two unexpected albums would make it better? lol
🤣@@callum7081
I mean yeah probably lol
Best year ever 🧡🧡🧡
The new album is on non-stop and the vinyl is on pre-order. I will be at the Leeds show on Saturday to cap off a beautiful week :) @@UnhappyGirl13
This song is unhinged! This is magic.
new to this band, but the lead singer plays with the vocal melodies in the exact way i LOVE coming from string instrumentalists and i didn't even know i needed it but now i'm just craving it whenever i put on headphones
WHAT THE HELL??? YOU GUYS ARE INSANE FOR THIS
« Light from the stars won’t really reach anything, will it ? » so meaningful
What a song! Anyone else think that 'Laugh Track' is a far superior album to 'First Two Pages of Frankenstein'?
I think it falls off after Space Invaders and then goes out strong with this song. Unfortunately, three mediocre songs in a row on an album stands out to me. One mediocre song bracketed by two good songs is fine but not three in a row.
High violet vibes! Love it
It seems this album and most of the last are a return to their High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me period and I am beyond excited to throw these on repeat like I did for both of those albums
Why is it that the more chill bands always make the absolute best bangers when they choose to do a more upbeat song? This is crazy good.
I've been avoiding emotions and then this song was sung.
Nothing has excited me like this since SWB
The GUITARS! 🎸❤
A minute in and I know this one’ll be on repeat 🔥💨
This was definitely favorite track they played live so I'm glad studio version sounds great as well
Do you know how much I love you, Sad dads?
Leave it to the National to drop one of their absolute best songs of all time as the last track on a surprise album.
Saw them live last November! This song live was 🔥
Pure unadulterated magic omg ❤ Seeing them in 2 days and a whole other album with this energy just dropped! Phenomenal ❤
This is what I needed... Thank you The National

First off - 2 albums in a year -- thank you… thank you… thank you… -- I think so many of us needed this song this year…these two albums … thank you
just looking at the length I'm excited
That's what she said.
Radiohead finally meets their match. Why did this great band abandon Alligator, until now? Holy shit. This is the best song they’ve made in almost 20 years. One of the best I’ve heard from anyone in 5. Bring the guitars back, twinny boys! And Matt! Freak out again, like this, my man! Did I mention holy shit?
I forgot how much I loved you. Didn’t I?
OK, it's time to listen to the songs on this album 100 times hahaha. Thank you very much for sharing. feel lucky to hear it
Reminds me a bit of Humiliation top tune and two brilliant albums in one year happy days!
instant fave
i'm obsessed!!!
Love me a no skip album. Finished so well with this masterpiece ❤
What a piece of song!!
This is a REAL switchup. All the last songs, to my knowledge, on their previous albums have been slow-ballads. But this, THIS motherfucking SLAPS.
Mr November on Alligator is an exception
abel, i would say, is also an exception
@@Jess-oo2os Abel is not a closer
ah, sorry! i did not read that properly haha. still a good song nonetheless @@father042
Pure Magic 🖤
The effects at the end sound so much like the 2006 live versions of Radiohead's Videotape! This is an amazing song
could have been on "High violet" , love the drive!
we're looking forward to see them, here Madrid next wednesday october 4 🎸
The National eu amo vocês pra Caralh***
FRESH......RAW......Good for you.....
This song is "Sad Dads" vs "Mad Dads". Awesome!!!!!!
this make me wanna spinnin in a damn woods
Three sirens going off simultaneously.
huge thanx
The National x The Cure 🔥
On repeat!!!
Let’s all take a moment to contemplate the note on the ankle of the last living pigeon.
I hope it’s not written yet!
Love ❤️🔥 it!!!
There is a lot going on in this song that shouldn’t work….. but it does ❤
We have NIN at home
This song became my least favorite one to my most listened song from this album fairly quickly. And for some reason Matt's singing in this makes me also feel a little bit drunk :D
Why is nobody else commenting about the fact that it blinked
🖤
Got that power of the spoken word
Don't fear the reaper?
❤.
This smells like NPR tastes.
Holy F Shit
🎶❤🔥
Sounds like Joy division
should've been a Rilo Kiley cover
Some carhartic ass cymbal crashes in the last third
Nathan for You anyone?
Oof the pitch correction though.
finally in the last song we have fucking the national and not some pop song cooked with taylor swift influence
This is like waking up from a very boring three album long dream.
