    In this video, I'm taking you on a thrilling journey as I tackle a grease trap with a damaged filter!
    What is a grease trap you ask?
    A grease trap is a plumbing device (a type of trap) designed to intercept most greases and solids before they enter a wastewater disposal system. Common wastewater contains small amounts of oils which enter into septic tanks and treatment facilities to form a floating scum layer. This scum layer is very slowly digested and broken down by microorganisms in the anaerobic digestion process. Large amounts of oil from food preparation in restaurants can overwhelm a septic tank or treatment facility, causing the release of untreated sewage into the environment. High-viscosity fats and cooking grease such as lard solidify when cooled, and can combine with other disposed solids to block drain pipes.
    Grease traps have been used since Victorian days: Nathaniel Whiting obtained the first patent in the late 1800s. The traps reduce the amount of fats, oils, greases, and solids (FOGS) that enter sewers. They consist of boxes within the drain run that flows between the sinks in a kitchen and the sewer system. They have only kitchen waste water flowing through them and do not serve any other drainage system, such as toilets. They can be made from various materials, such as stainless steel, plastics, concrete and cast iron. They range from 35-liter capacity to 45,000 litres and greater. They can be located above ground, below ground, inside the kitchen, or outside the building.
    Grease traps should be cleaned out every 1 - 3 months depending on how much use it gets.

    Grease traps do seem a very good idea for takeaways and restaurants, we don't have them here in britain, so when the fat is discharged into the sewers, it mixes with toilet wipes and creates huge fatbergs. 👍

    I'm so glad you did this one. Mason jars chains was my first attempt at hydroponics. Word to the wise, use a larger jar for the refill reservoir, and beware of fruiting plants. I grew sunflowers and they became top heavy and would fall over, even with large jars and rocks in the cups

    This is interesting. I never knew until now that some grease traps have filters on the outlet, the way some septic tanks have filters to protect the drain field. I can't wait to see the repair on the filter that fell off.

  • @ScottWorthington
    @ScottWorthington ปีที่แล้ว

    I've seen a few TH-camrs that needed a good punch in the face, but Bruce isn't one of them.
    When you do the repair here I would like to see the new filter and how it works. I worked in foodservice, I'm familiar with smaller grease traps with baffle plates, but I'm not understanding the filter.
    Anyhoo - thanks for sharing, Bruce.
    Remember the words of the great Iron Mike, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face."
    Protect yourself at all times and keep living the dream.

    Is it possible to change the nozzle on the lance gun?, I would think a solid stream of water would work better on those types of filters, rather then the fan spray.

    Just an FYI for American viewers, if you're curious where grease traps are the next time you're at a restaurant, you'll probably see 2 manholes next to each other in the parking lot that are marked "SANITARY". That's where the grease trap is.
