- UPDATE STORM #4(Typhoon Soulik) made landfall with strong winds and heavy rain, wide-spread flooding and numerous landslides.
The typhoon made landfall between Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces at 2pm Thursday September 19.
Quan Tri, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien-Hue and Quan Am suffered widespread flooding and landslides.
More than 100 landslides occurred across provinces affected by the typhoon.
Quan Tri Province's Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue reported on Sept.20 that 1000 households had to be evacuated due to the storm's impact.
Fortunately for Danang the typhoon shifted further north. Typhoons often shift direction once making landfall due to land temperature and wind currents from the mountains of Central Vietnam. The local government had ordered all schools closed on September 19th in the Danang area in anticipation of the storm.
Reported on Sept.19, 2024-Storm #4, is expected to hit Da nang, Vietnam late in the day, September 19th. Winds up to 100km/hr and 100-300mm of rainfall. This after Typhoon Yagi made landfall in the north last week causing one of the worst natural disasters in 50 years.

*UPDATE* STORM #4(Typhoon Soulik) made landfall with strong winds and heavy rain in Quang Tri and Quang Binh provinces. Fortunately for Danang and Quan Am the typhoon shifted further north than expected so there was little to no effect south of the Hai Van Pass. The local government had ordered all schools closed on September 19th in the Danang area in anticipation of the storm.
Sounds like the old man at the end of the video was correct with his prediction 😉
@@golfaddict9 haha, yes this time for sure!
I have plans to visit from Saigon in 10 days. Do you still recommend to come to Da Nang, Hoi An, and Cu Lao Cham then? Or is everything so flooded/dangerous to visit?
@@trinhv5012 I can’t speak about the Cham Islands but for Hoi An or Danang it’s possible even at this time of year to have pleasant weather. But do be prepared for storms or heavy rain at times.
@@iamjohnsaboe thank you so much 🥹. I needed to confirm. I originally was supposed to go to Ha Noi/Sa Pa/Ha Giang (first time visiting outskirts of Ha Noi) instead but had to cancel because of Yagi and detour to Central Vietnam and I don’t want to have to cancel it again if it’s not dangerous to visit. My family in the South is a little conservative with it but I was insisting on going to Da Nang since I haven’t heard crazy news about Soulik.
Missed your down to earth and interesting videos. Welcome back.
Thanks so much! I’ll be back more regularly. Appreciate your support!
Good to see you back, John. Please stay safe and give an update when it is over.
Sure thing and thanks so much!!!
The old man's English skill is really impressive. His pronunciation, intonation and the choice of vocas are exceptional. I agree with what he said.
Yes he’s quite a character!
Thx for the update , stay safe and keep us posted if you can ! Im moving to Da Nang in Feb of 2025 so few months from now
Will do! Yes I’ll have an update!
The older gentleman already predicts the storm. Love that bamboo canopy still standing there at the beach
Yes!
Hope you enjoy my hometown during your time here :).
Just missed major storm there two years ago. Flew back to Saigon in time. Got lucky.
Good to see your vlogs. Will return to Da Nang on New Year’s Day for three nights.
Cool and thanks! See you next year!
I believe you John what you say is true
Because l was there in 1986 a big typhoon hit Hue half of the trees were knocked down by the wind and rain it was last for 2 weeks
At that time l was 20 was young and less experience too
and economic was hardship
Thank you for recording this. We love to live in Da Nang for our retirement. Not sure when we can do so. Someone recorded the storm last year and the wind was very strong but not much damage. Which is good!
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your future plans!
I live in Florida and seeing hurricanes/typhoons is just no small matter. Good luck to my countrymen in dealing with this storm.
Thanks, you are totally correct! Thanks for sharing!!!
Hi John . I’m from San Diego California. I have my cousin lives in Da Nang now for a while he is also from US but he moved back to Vietnam and got married . I’m very worried about a new storm coming soon to Da Nẵng. I will be waiting for your new video post it soon about the Storm. Thanks John for sharing. ❤
Thanks so much!!! Most people in Danang are well prepared for storms. I’ll be back with another update!
Oh dear yes I think this could be the end of the world
Storms often come to Da Nang from Oct to Dec in monsoon (rainy season) with flooding. G luck 😢
Yes of course! Thanks!
heading there in 2 weeks, hopefully things have settle down
We too .. thinking whether to cancel or postpone the plan.

Please stay safe John and let's not belittle this storm. God bless.
Thanks so much!!!
Hopefully the storm will pass on Oct 3rd, when I visit Da Nang. Stay safe John
You’re safe and the typhoon shifted north before landfall so we were not affected as forecast.
I've been wanting to visit there someday. You guys stay safe!
Thanks, appreciate that!
Great to see your videos posted again , stay safe from the storm. I’ll be checking for you again shortly to see what damage had been done to the beautiful city.
M Gale ….Canada
Thanks so much! We dodged a bullet. The typhoon turned north once it made landfall!
Hope everyone in Da Nang stays safe
We are safe thanks! The typhoon shifted north and Quang Tri and Quang Binh were affected.
My hotel is around the corner from where you filmed this. Yesterday was pretty bad, I'm expecting tonight's storm to be even worse so I have just stocked up on food.
Good! Yes expecting strong winds and lots of rain! Stay safe!!!!
You should stock up on clean water.
@@psy4721 yes thanks!
Did the storm hit yet?
@@DaveEPie it appears the storm shifted further north so we dodged a bullet on this one.
Northern and now Central. I truly hope for the people to be safe and sound.
Thank you! Fortunately for Danang the typhoon turned further north so we were unaffected.
Hey John, great to see you of course, but not under these circumstances! I remember you riding out a storm in Taipei back in the day. At least you have a lot of experience with these situations. Keep yourself safe bro!
Hey MJ, always great to hear from you! I was just thinking today how many typhoons and earthquakes we lived through during my time in Taiwan. Hope to see you one of these days soon!
Blessings this old man Vietnamese
G'day John,

Hey man I'm also living here in Da Nang, been here on and off for a little over a year. I love watching your videos. Hopefully we will run into each other around the city. 👍👍
Thanks mate! Sounds good and see you around!!!
@@iamjohnsaboe Yes definitely. A lot of the places I see you on your videos I'm always near those places too. I do a TH-cam channel also but I have nowhere near as many subscribers as you, hopefully we cross paths at some point. 👍👍
Stay safe John, ❤❤❤
Thanks so much!!!
thanks for your sharing, keep safe dear friend!
Thank you so much!? We are safe in Danang and Quan Am.
Just loving the local Vietnamese, especially the older ones.
Yeah they are the salt of the earth!
Hi John, Vietnam is great hope to be back soon 😍😍😍
Cool! Hope to see you back soon!!!
Be safe and keep us posted. My Wife's family lives in Hue.
The typhoon affected Quang Tri and Quang Binh provinces. Hue would have seen effects as well. Not much south of Hai Van Pass.
thank you for the on the scene update. hoping everyone is safe and no big impacts. pls give us updat4s when you get a chance. we're planned to be in danang in 2 weeks. hopefully everything is ok by then.
Danang and Quan Am are ok. The typhoon brought strong winds and heavy rain to Quang Tri and Quang Binh provinces.
Please be safe and take care of yourself John.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate that!!!
Stay safe John
Thanks Michael!!!
Please take care
Thanks so much!!!
Dude: So what happened ? It’s 11:30pm here in Hoi An and it’s bone dry… all that hype for nothing ??
No hype, Reuters and other Vietnamese news services forecast the typhoon to affect Danang and Quan Am. It shifted before making landfall. Danang schools were all ordered closed on Thursday September 19th in anticipation of the typhoon.
Be safe all of you there
Thanks!!!
Dude, how do you do it. Just chill so long w/o work in south eat Asia? Please teach my Yoda!! Thanks!! Great video.
Haha! I don’t talk about my work in these videos which are actually apart of my work. I teach media/communcation at a university and I work in broadcast television. I have no plans to ever stop working.
It may just be me but natural disasters happen almost everywhere. Im used to tornadoes. This can’t be that odd
Normal occurrence this time of year but we are coming off the worst on in 50 years in Vietnam.
Be safe My Man!!!
Thanks man!!! Appreciate that!!!
🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!🙏🙏🙏
Wow...best typhoon yet. It hardly rained...
The typhoon shifted when it made landfall. North of Hai Van Pass including Quan Tri received heavy rainfall and strong winds.
@@iamjohnsaboe Soulik, more a tropical storm, than typhoon. Yeah, looking at the satellite data I was expecting the rain. I've been through about 5 typhoons in the area and this was the my favorite.
@@JDHobbs yes we’re very lucky!
No sign of a storm in DN so far...
The typhoon shifted further north before making landfall so we didn’t see the same effects Quang Tri and Quang Binh received.
Hope you dont get as much rain as hanoi and surrounds!!🙏😎
Thanks! We’ll get lots but nowhere near as much!
Will be there on october 11.Hope its not getting worse..
ill be there October 10 th 😬
No way of saying that far in advance. The rainy season extends to December.
This old man Vietnamese he used to work for America during the Vietnam war
I was last year in da nang in february and was fog and cold, is now starting rain season until february?
Yes rainy season extend until December but still some rainy days and cool temps in January and early February.
hey man, havnt seen you for long
I’m back, thanks!
@@iamjohnsaboe i am now in central da nang, maybe we should meet and have a drink together sometime
No storm in Hoi An .
Yes it shifted before landfall hitting Quang Tri and Quang Binh.
👍🏼🙏🏼
Thank you!
After getting wiped out by Ian, in FT Myers .. Given Climate Change, it's better to "just Visit the Coast" o/w it's a bad idea to "live on the coast" these days, Esp in the Tropics (ground zero) ..
Time will tell but coast and interior of countries have all been affected.
@@iamjohnsaboe "it's already here" ..
@@enzos711 you’re saying stay away from the coast but climate change is not isolated just to the coast. May interior of countries are dealing with more forest fires than ever in recorded history.
@@iamjohnsaboe I know it's everywhere, but "living on the coast" in the Topics, esp during "Cyclone Season" is "Ground Zero" .. "Storm Surge" is by far the deadliest ..
@@enzos711 the recent loss in Vietnam was not on the coast, it was in the mountains.
Has anyone told you that you look like Bruce Willis?
😂😂😂
Stay in the hotel and eat pho and get massages
Why not?
