  • At Machina Bristronica 2023, we met again with Girts from Erica Synths to get the lowdown on the Bullfrog, a collaboration between Erica Synths and Richie Hawtin designed to bring synthesis education into schools. The Bullfrog is a fully modular synthesizer tailored for educational purposes, featuring color-coded modules and step-by-step learning progressions. It aims to engage students in music technology by providing hands-on experience with patching and sound design, making it a valuable tool for both kids and teachers. With its educational focus, the Bullfrog is a promising initiative to reintroduce physical synthesizers into schools, offering a new way to inspire students to explore the world of electronic music.
While the big Bullfrog model is still in development and set to release next year, the smaller version is already available for both educational institutions and individuals. Priced at 500 euros (with significant discounts for educational institutions), the Bullfrog comes with various voice cards, including a sequencer, acid bassline, and a sampler looper, allowing for creative experimentation and learning. Erica Synths is dedicated to making electronic music education accessible, bridging the gap between physics and music technology.
Bullfrog available now. Price: 500 Euros

Really admirable and heart warming! Erica Synths make some of the most incredible cutting edge stuff available so for them to recognise the value in education and create such a perfectly comprehensive and creative educational electronic device is a joyful thing to behold. The Richie Hawtin connection pushes it over the edge!

Hats off to Erica Synths for being such an amazing company! Also, I tried Bullfrog at Volt Music Store here Rotterdam; apart from it being a perfect learning synth, it sounds really great as well!

Love this concept. What a great way to get people into synthesis, especially gearing this towards education.

I have one of these, it’s my first real step into modular synthesis, the manual is very informative with great examples, and you can coax some interesting sounds out of it.

Is the manual will teach you synthesis if you're a beginner?

That seems a cracking good synth for €500, visually pleasing and excellent-sounding. And with the expansion slot, it will be easy to mod and expand too.
The market needs more properly open-architecture synths like this, the Phenol and the Dreadbox Dysphonia, where nothing happens until you connect cables. It is easier to work with as you also get the visual and tactile feedback of how things connect, and that also makes it easier to learn and remember what you do.

It $609.00 in the USA through Sweetwater. I would love to have one but that is too expensive for a basic starter synth. I was looking forward to the bullfrog release. I am very disappointed with the price.

My first synth cost about 1k usd, i saved a lot for it but it was worth it.

Well done, Girts. Maybe Sonic State could contribute a lesson to the education program. DivKid might do a who set of lessons, if he could be persuaded the time expenditure would result in helping school music programs (which have been in retreat at the primary level since the era of Thatcher and Reagan introduced the concept of "austerity" to education while Europe and the U.S. were actually quite flush with funds, by historical standards). Not to put anyone on the spot, but clearly the project could use more friends.

As a music teacher, I love the synth and the ideas behind it. On the other hand, I am afraid, that it is just too expensive. Local governments will not invest thousands of Euros in let´s say 15 of these for one classroom of 30 kids.

If I imagine putting an 8-year old in front of that thing and it doesn't produce any sounds and if it does, it does a single long wail and needs extra modules to play a melody (that has only six steps and sounds like sh*t) ... it would loose interest after 30 seconds and be frustrated by modular for life. I mean Erica Synth produces great synths, also very good non-modular ones, why make things so complicated? Colorful knobs don't solve the problem that this is a toy for the physics class, not an instrument for musical education.
