Eh, Unless you already are using Uber, drinking at Dunkin and eating at Five Guys regularly, this card is not worth it.
The credits are dumb but the card is still easily worth it. An Amex setup is still super high value if you know what you're doing. Green and everyday preferred might be a better options for some people now, but generally still extremely worth it, especially if you dont really buy food out and mostly only eat at home
Exactly. I really want to get into the Amex ecosystem, but they're credits don't make sense for my spending. For the gold, I don't drink coffee, rarely ever take Uber, never get Uber eats, and don't really eat fast food burgers.
Me ✋️
@@anonymoose2474 The credits aren't dumb you just aren't the target audience. Everything isn't meant for you, the card is meant for a younger crowd who very likely uses Uber Eats or Grubhub and likes to travel aka my gen. Its not even something new its been known for a while that amex has been trying to and successfully attracting new/young cardholders. Even without that, the insurance alone makes he gold worth it. Up to 50k a year and it covers personal damage dealt.
@@scottshapiro2795 SUB and retention offers. Gold for grocery. That's all I need to get immense value. I don't even travel either, i use the ubereats for one free meal a month and dont ever use it besides that. I use the platinum amex charles schwab card to convert the points 1.1cpp to roth IRA above contribution max
If you have to put in effort and change your behavior it's not saving you any money
You're in fact spending more
That's the point, although it is possible to have net postive benefits
"effort" genuine clown
especially if the credit doesn't cover a basic meal like the overpriced 5 guys coupon
Jeez I wonder if Amex gold is for everyday people?
exactly
Can’t help but feel like there is “girl math” going on when claiming we are essentially getting paid to use the card. Unless you’re already spending more than what if offered monthly in benefits, you’ll end up spending more money than you normally would have without the card.
Which is exactly why I’m cancelling once my anniversary hits.
… sexist much…
@@NovaDoll “girl math” is literally something women made up, to sound cute and quirky and justify their spending. This has nothing to do with sexism. That was just an analogy.
@@NovaDollyep! Bye Karen 😂
Amex: "west coast? Screw you"
Haha I feel this but luckily have a Dunkin' near me. (I'm in SF)
@@csboisame SF here, but the closest dunkin to me is SFO 😂
@@ivanwen8335 Ha! Yeah that's the one I go to but I commute so it's on the way, convenient for me, luckily 👍
In Portland there are exactly …….. 0 dunkins...hmm
@@ivanwen8335theres one in my city: SSF. Right by 101.
Hey John, I been a fan for a long time but I felt off about this review. To say that this is the best card of the year is an over statement. The main appeal of this card was always about the 4% groceries and restaurants. The extra credit was a nice bonus but you shouldn’t make extra purchase just to make the card justify. I felt like it’s just a more expensive version of the previous gold card. I hope your enthusiasm about this card is pure and not due to any under the table deal to promote the card.
100% this review reeks of paid content. No unbiased review would recommend the card given the new set of credits
Yeah I felt off somehow been following for years now. I don’t agree a single bit with this review at all. Felt like it was a paid review
The amex pblue card gives 6x on groceries and gas so it is much better
@@mspro9032I might be mistaken but I think the 6% only applies to groceries and it’s only 3% for gas?
@@OohCHOCOLATE98 you know what you may be right, I may be mistaken. I'm going to check 🤪
It's not free coffee, you are paying $325 AF. You can make coffee at home for 10 cents per mug. And don't have to travel to get it.
Come on man ! Be loyal to your suscribers and don’t bullshit them for paid promotions … you will have to shut your channel down when everyone unsubscribes
I agree with you, brother
Right
I unsubscribed awhile ago. Saw this vid in my suggested and clicked out of curiosity. He is still going in the same direction for sure
Dude is being paid well
Amex is one of the last cards I would want. I would place Chase, Citi, and CapitalOne ahead of them all day long. Amex is an over priced coupon book that requires wayyy to much work to get value out of. No thanks.
And the amount of coping amex card holders make to defend their over-priced glorified coupon book is actually comical. I feel like it only makes sense if you live in NYC and the Northeast urban sprawl where you can easily have access to the credits. Here in the West Coast, not really ideal.
I love the Citi custom cash card they pay me 300 dollars a year cash back. Just to spend 500 dollars a month on stuff I’m already going to buy. I get paid 25 dollars monthly. I invest it all. I don’t have to pay them any fees
I will only use the free Amex blue card because they give me 3% back on internet purchases. They only let me credit it to my account too greedy,
Cap 1 is trash in my opinion.
One of the only people I’ve seen give a positive opinion about the updated benefits…
I wonder how much he got paid by Amex for this vid....
I got an offer for 100k points
for real? 90k is the highest ive seen
Nice, I got mine with 90k
@@anonymoose2474yeah I see it too
If I can get the 100K points I might be able to justify this. Great card for certain people but I’m over traveling and don’t really like eating out like that either.
Luck. I just recently got 175k on the Platinum, so will have to wait a bit on the gold. Hoping to snag a crazy bonus when time comes. Keep your eyes peeled
While on paper it’s great that we can be in the positive for the EAF, it’d be great if more restaurants were added to Resy!
Love the energy. However, the $99 rant is way overdone. Saying that the dining credits are easy is only accurate if you live in a city with Dunkin (try to find one in Seattle) and one that has Resy restaurants (many don’t). Also, there is a reason that many people, including major credit card TH-camrs are canceling the card. Having to take actions you wouldn’t normally take, like going to Shake Shack monthly, is gimmicky and annoying. And the value has to be compared to value you can get with alternative cards with much lower or no fees. Bottom line: a bit more balance in presentation would be nice. Your videos are great, but this one misses.
4x miles at grocery stores and restaurants is unbeatable by any card.
@@FurkanCemTurfandaYou might want to investigate that a little more.
@@FurkanCemTurfandaMy SavorOne offers 3x on restaurants and groceries. Oh, and it costs me nothing out of pocket per year. 😊
There’s a reason I and others like me no longer carry the Amex Gold.
@@derekbernard3905 Ok, and? The Amex more than pays for itself. The difference between 3x and 4x is huge, plus you get all the credits for restaurants and Uber.
He’s probably getting paid from Amex for making this video.
Man I lucked out! Just got approved last week for the 90k bonus with $250 annual fee, went ahead and put myself as an auth user and got the white gold card shipped earlier today.
What do you mean you added yourself as an auth user?
I...I cant see how this fits a fiscally responsible lifestyle, unless you are already eating at all these places you lose money, you have to go out of your way to go there, you probably wont just spend the credit, you'll spend under or over.
its bad for your health too. You are also paying a very expensive health cost.
@@963seeker agreed five guys it's absolutely disgusting IMO 😂 and cheesecake factory ain't much better.
You never eat out? These credits can be redeemed through Uber eats and GrubHub, both of which allow you to select any restaurant you want. The only exception is the Dunkin credit
I can't even eat 5 guys since I'm deathly allergic to peanut oil, and I don't just food places enough to accommodate for food allergies @@KParks
He is getting commission on this ad🤣
I mean mostly all finance influencers do...
I got 90K points signing up for this card a few weeks ago. My buddy just found a 100K points offer for this card today.
“Pay you to have it” meanwhile they are raking it in from their partnerships with those companies and handing you a credit that they didn’t pay a dime for 😂
Feel like you are forcing this one. 5% cash back no annual fee cards still beat this.
What card is that?
@@mickeymckenna4869 There are a few, with reward multiplier limits. For 5% cashback grocery, I've been using AAA's credit card (you don't have to be a member) which is up to $10k per year (I'm personally not going to go over this). Dining is a bit more difficult, but I use the Redstone FCU one which is up to $7k per year. If you happened to go over the limits, there is a mobile wallet category of 5% up to $3k per year for the USBank Kroger/Harris Teeter cards. All of these cards have no foreign transaction fee so you are good there too.
John "girl math" Liang 🤣, time to get some ozempic from eating five guys and dunkin donuts once a year
My unbiased opinion. Anytime a company rolls out something new, guarantee 2 things. (1) cost will increase (2) value will decrease. This is not limited to points cards. If you ever had cable TV, you know what I’m talking about.
Have to disagree with you on the $99 net benefits. To me, the point is not on the 'effort', but having to go out of my way every month to spend money that otherwise I'm not spending is not benefits.
I'd rather keep the money in my pocket than having to pay the fees up front to go spend more every month to recoup them back.
6/5 rating on credits is an L. You have to go so far out of your way to eat at 1 of the 5 restaurants every month and use resy when most people don’t normally
You are forcec to spend money on overpriced food unless you are already using uber, grub and eat at the resy restaurants. The getting paid argument argument is false.
And just over night, the card fits my spending habits much better.
So many people get this card that aren’t the target market. The higher fee sucks but I can easily capture the credits (except DD) based on my personal and work spend. Now I get to take my team out for dinner at an expensive restaurant, get the $50 credit, get reimbursed the full amount, and make 4%. Looks like a free $70 is coming my way Wednesday.
Oh boy! Too bad the tip that you put on the card won’t be reimbursed by your company or be covered by the $70 credit (on a $500 tab). 😅
@@Horse-c2t what part of “get reimbursed the full amount” makes you think I won’t get paid for the tip? I’m not paying 20% or more out of my own pocket.
"There's no free lunch".. no truer words man! As with everything, got to put in a bit of work to enjoy maximum benefits. For some people, the thought of this escapes them. 🎉
I only like the Amex Blue card. It’s the only American Express card I will ever have.
(Savings ?= good thing) != Being paid
Should add a small caveat that it's technically, you potentially save more than you spend on the fee.
Say Apple card figures it out, charges a 500 dollar annual fee, but gives a 800 dollar statement credit yearly towards a new iphone. (Up to 200 per phone)
You werent getting paid 300 dollars each year if you are a crazy person who buys 4 new iphones each year, you paid 1000+1000+1000+1000+500-800= 3700 dollars for 4 iPhones, aka a 10% discount, which could be nice if you were otherwise going to spend 4000 every year buying the new iphone for yourself and your family, but it would obviously not be for everyone.
I am excited about the changes to the Gold card. I requested the white gold card replacement as soon as I saw it was available. The Dunkin' credit is not useful for me, but I have already used the Resy credit. I happen to use Rest quite a bit for my weekend dining adventures. The $100 Rest credit plus the 240 in other credits which I use each month, means I am still net positive with the new annual fee - which will not hit my acct until next summer. I was a big fan of the Gold card before. It is the card I use for dining. The new Rest credit makes me an even bigger fan of the card. Great video, John - as always.
just pointing out that if you are active duty in the military the $325 fee is waived so all the benefits are free
YOU HAVE TO BE Approved FIRST OF ALL
I have NOT been approved I’ve been trying for 3 years.
sending you love and full support from Vienna with love
I actually feel like you do John.. the Resy credit change is something we do all the time... If I use $100 on Resy, $60 ubers (half of them), Dunkin $42 (half of them), Essentially I pay $100-$125 (max) for 200,000 plus points between our grocery store runs and dining ... plus some other charges that come thru.. 200k points for $125 bucks feels like a reasonable deal.. plus we usually use the Hotel Credit... so all good.
Oh i'm pretty excited for the dunkin credit. Literally go there everyday before work lol
Your that excited for a 7$ a month credit. 😑
@@KParks Lol if you know how to use it, it adds up. It's not a use it or lose it credit this time 😂
I know many negative comments but I see all your points John! I’m going to be ordering my card today! I live right next door to a Dunkin and Five Guys lol
Price increase for both the Platinum and Gold are wild... $600 for the Platinum and $300 for the Gold at most and even then those prices are wild lmfao
Question regarding the credits for dining and such. How do you receive them? Do you just see $10 a month added to your statement? Do you need to eat out/uber/dunkin to get them?
This is only if you already go to these places already. Also you are going to end up spending more than that 10 dollars a month.
As someone who drinks Dunkin, thank you.
Sorry you're being attacked by bots. It's SO weird that every comment is negative.
Meanwhile Amex Marriott Brilliant... 1 free night (per year) of up to 85,000 Marriott points, $25 monthly ($300 annual) restaurant credit, platinum elite status at Marriott & affiliates, current 95K sign up bonus, Priority Pass (airport lounge) entry, annual fee $650. 4x-6x points for travel, 2x-3x points on other purchases. I figure you come pretty close to break-even with the $650 fee.
You misinform. They didn’t add Five Guys, they replaced Shake Shack FOR Five Guys.
they added five guys technically. Milk bar and shake shack still on the list until September. So right now it’s added on not replaced.
Yeahhh Five guys is added on the list 😄
You thought you had one there huh. lol. Nope. It was added.
@@wuzgoodjerz74 read the comment ☝️. It’s til Sept but it’s being replaced. That’s like saying “in addition to your burger you get fries but after 5 minutes you’ll lose your buns forever.”
Oof that is a big difference😬
Love the Amex gold. I spend most of my money on food and this card is excellent for that. I also take advantage of the different cash back offers by making purchases through various vendors. I already took advantage of the new Resy credit by treating a friend to dinner for her birthday. This card may not be for everyone, but it is definitely the one for me. BTW, I'm waiting for my new white gold to arrive 🔥
I got the new white gold card and it looks awful! Nothing like the promotions. After this increase in price I’m probably downgrading anyway.
They didn't revolutionize anything, they are just rebranding the physical card and charging more. Users are not getting a ton of value just more coupons that you will likely not use.
Id say this is only worth it if you use absolutely all of its credit benefits and you live on the east side to get a dunkin breakfast sandwich as youre already on your way to some other location (bc at that point you're wasting gas).
But if you dont use Resy you could also be breaking even. And at that point youre opting in for amex's reputation and customer seevice and such
Dude. I like how you have the short and long version. Great work man
What is resy? Awesome videos
I was very ambivalent about the gold card when the rumors of the af increase being offset by the resy credit, but the dunkin credit makes the card worth keeping. I go there once or twice a month anyway so easy value.
Likewise, was in charleston for vacation when the refresh happened and totally accidentally ate at a resy restaurant that night and redeemed the credit
I’m a fan of the change and get net positive value from the gc now
I'm officially canceling my gold card. It's a gold coupon book now forcing us to go out of our way to spend to get our value.
What exactly counts as restaurants? Any restaurants? Sit down restaurants? High end? Fast food?
You can request the white card if you already have the gold. That's what some other TH-cam channels are saying
You made me feel better about getting it. I got lucky and got it a few weeks ago so i only got the 250 AF with the 75k SUB
I just got accepted to the gold card so I’m hoping it’s worth it.
This review was not it
Nope, Im cancelling mine.
Me also. 😊
Are you still still SOL if you got the platinum card before the gold card???
I upgraded my Gold to the Platinum last year when they offered me 100k to upgrade. Now wondering if they’ll give me another gold. Contrary to everything I’ve heard, I had a Gold Business card. I upgraded to the Platinum for 120k bonus. Several months later, they offered me 150K to get the gold business again. I received TWO different SUBs on the Business Gold. Maybe I’ll try getting the personal Gold again…
Got my white gold today!! Monday 7/29
So, there's no Dunkin in Utah, but there's one coming soon. I didn't think I'd ever use the credit, but I heard you can reload a Dunkin card in the app and it'll count. So, instead of going out of my way, whenever I'm close or on vacation, I'll get a good-sized breakfast for me and my wife. Resy is actually harder for me now. There's only a handful of restaurants in Utah on Resy. However, we'll travel and I can make a trip into SLC once every 6 months to go out for a fancy meal. The math will still work out.
I was under the impression that the white gold would be a NEW AMEX. I’m now understanding that it’s just a new color for gold. Bummed about the AF price increase honestly.
Dining credit is too restrictive. Other than Dunkin, five guys is gross and I'm not dragging myself to a mediocre cheesecake factory just to use credits. For the few people that love scarfing down that five guys slop and and can use all the credits no problem it's definitely a good deal.
Fries are the bomb! Really, alI i order. Once a month is good for me.
I have 4 AMEX cards and they are the best!
Cancelled my card yesterday. The welcome bonus was pretty good, but who wants a Dunkin Donuts credit.
Is the 20% in statement credits on restaurants in the first 6 months considered a SUB or just the 60/90 K points? I already have the platinum and ineligible for lower tier card SUBs.
I don't like being pushed into spending habits that I don't necessarily already have. Are there any services that look at your past year's credit card bills, compare your spending and their categories against all the credit cards and their offers and find the best card or cards for you? I wouldn't even mind if it also included cards and said "if you spend just 'x' amount more in a certain category..."
I can confirm that 90,000 point offers do exist! I signed up in November 2023 and had to spend $6,000 in 6 months to get the 90,000 points. Relatively easy with vacation and engagement rings LOL
True! Hopefully not too many points for the divorce/child support 😅
It’d be more justified if they added at $7 Starbucks reward instead of Dunkin. I’m currently moving to Florida where they have Dunkin but if I wasn’t it would be worthless. I think $290/$300 would be a more acceptable offer. However I love Amex and am mostly fully liquid with them so it’s still worth it for me.
living in San Jose and this card remains a personal fav. the Dunkin credit is atrocious but even without it, i get a lot of value without changing spending habits. i bike everywhere and order GH and UE pick-up. Resy credit will be easy to use in SF. people who dont eat out much should close the card 😅
That card is blue and black!
HAHAH underrated comment

Dining credits are mostly a waste. No more cheesecake factory or shake shack, and most people don't go to five guys more than twice a year. Still loses to the Venture X with how easy to get all credits
Im highly thinking of jumping on this. I could use most credits and i go to dunks daily.
Chase Preferred is better. Very glad i didnt go amex gold.
lol this is an ad folks
There are no Dunkin Donuts where I'm from.
“Dining credit” aka only applies to 5 completely random and rare chain restaurants . Useless for people who rarely eat at chains
Card is worth it for my situation. Annual fee is waived for military so all the upsides with no downside. Especially because other than rent and insurance, groceries are my highest bill
Hilarious. His positive attitude.. I was just waiting for him to laugh and say “just kidding”. While all the other TH-camrs are speaking truth about how dumb this update is, this bro is working hard to hype and collect those referral points.
For my lifestyle, I don't see this card saving me money. I would have to spend more money than I normally would have just to get these benefits which definitely won't outweigh the savings had I just not changed my lifestyle.
I have the blue cash everyday card… if I earn points on this card could I transfer it to this card?
Everyday dollars and membership points are different. Meaning the Amex plat and gold are the valuable ones and blue cash is something different entirely which you can use for your statement
I get your point, but you will learn as you get older (and wiser) what amount of work will you put in for $5? Me? Not so much.
I replaced it the same day, back to the OG gold card.
Idk, the card has turned into a luxury coupon book. Not a fan. Chase is still killing it in my opinion
Best video on the refreshed gold so far
The combined US debt exceeds 34 trillion dollars. Do you really think it is a good idea to add to that? Debt is keeping you poor.
Wish the RESY credit was monthly, and they should add a basic Priority Pass Select to the card. Pay for access, but at least the option is there.
Dunkins at airpots apparently doesn't count so scammed...
The white gold card looks hideous, I just got mine two days ago
I live abroad and the Uber & Restaurant credits are US only. Raising the price doesn't work for me one bit.
Getting value from a card is work, but this isn't work. Researching the best travel redemptions is work. Trying to time your vacations for maximum value is work. Trying to balance your credit cards and use the best ones for each circumstance is work
Spending money you wouldn't have already spent is not work, it's just spending more money. So only Amex wins in this situation.
Don't act like using credits is work. If they fit into your daily spend then it's not really work as you were spending anyway. If they don't fit into your daily spend, it's just wasting money.
what is resy credit- a specific restaurant?
Sign up points are now 100,000 from what I'm seeing
Only problem for me with this card is I’m living in Italy and there are little to no Resy restaurants near me and they don’t have uber and the only Dunkin’s is on base
Ugh. Clicked on this not knowing it was yet another Amex gold video
Can’t wait to get an AMEX gold 🤩
"Lost"... got it.
I got pre-Approved for Platinum. I was laughing my ass off. I don't think AMex is as prestige as it is as before.
I’m still trying to figure out how a lot of TH-camrs say that they can get 2 cents per every point.
You have to transfer the points to transfer partners. Not all flights are 2c per point especially at economy flights. Real value is in business class. Although TH-camrs definitely over exaggerate how cheap the get businesses class
Woah you’re in Paris too! If I run into you def will ask for a pic. Love your content
