i just got done doing chains and guides on my wifes obd2. everyone was telling me that it is just a horrible job to do, but i found that it was nothing more than time consuming. lots of parts to take off to get to the chains, and nothing more. a couple of metal rulers held the cams at TDC, and a breaker bar on the crank kept things lined up, and it just popped together. and i can sure tell NOW that the old chains were getting noisy, when compared to how the engine sounds now! next step, figuring out why the o2a doesnt want to disengage the clutch properly after bleeding....

Thought I may have bent some valves). Well, it’s been running quiet and well for four years - so close, but not perfect like your job.
Thank you for yet another great video! I've never done an engine rebuild before but your videos as well as many hours of reading the manuals and forums have given me reassurance to tackle my R build
Important 24v VR6!!! when reinstalling the Camshaft Adjusters, the gear (most of the mass) needs to be turned all the way counter clock wise (left), with the Control plate (near the bolt head when installed) turned all the way clockwise (right)
Humble mechanic... I love your videos. I've watched a lot of them and I've never caught you in something that you were wrong about until today... I wish you were right I've always looked up to you and still do... But when you were finding top dead center that was not correct. the Piston dwells at the top of its stroke. Now maybe for putting the timing chain on a VR6 this is all you need to do but you should really look into finding true top dead center. The best way that I have learned is using a piston stop rotating it until the piston stops marking it on the underdrive pulley then rotate the engine other direction till it stops... marking it...m measure the distance in between the two marks cut that distance in half and mark on the crank/ underdrive pulley. usually most OE markings are a little off. I have found several manufacturers across many engine platforms and all the marks are usually a little off. I would say in between 2 and 5 degrees and that's also how you can find if your underdrive pulley has slipped/spun.
How do you torque the intermediate sprocket?? The slack is in a way that when you tighten that sprocket bolt u would rotate the sprocket and pull the slack? How do u get it to not rotate

I would like to change the timing belt, is it hard on that model or I should take it to a mechanic? do you recomend me buying the 2l gti or the vr6? I love how aggressive these motors are
Is this engine radically different for timing that a 24v bdf? Obviously the spark plug location is different...I do have a Bentley manual and I don’t need to actually do this yet but it’s cool getting to see it done so when I do go to build an engine I have a general idea what it’ll look like
Jonathan, did you eventually get around to replacing the timing chain on your VR6? I have a 2004 GTI with the same 24v VR6, engine code BDF. Today I started hearing what I believe is the tell tail noise of a potentially failed timing chain guide. I'm trying to quickly get smart on how to replace the chain and guides on this engine. If you did the job and have advice or know of a good video that shows how to do the job specifically on the BDF engine and can provide a link, it would be a huge help.
Thank you for this great informative video , I timed my vr6 last night and I was just curious if it’s normal for the 12 o’clock mark on the intermediate shaft sprocket to be slightly to the right of the cover for the intermediate shaft. So the point is just passed the marking. I can’t get it to sit perfectly in line. Thank you again!
Charles, ever see the gear on the intermediate shaft wear or break? Have one where the teeth broke and exited through the side of the lower timing cover.
Hi humble mechanic! I have a 92 gti with a 93 vr6 corrado engine in it! My dad & I are working on it and right now the car is cranking but not starting. Before it stopped working it started running hot and leaking anti freeze so I’m wondering if it’s the water pump? If this even is something that would stop the car from turning on? Other thing I was thinking was the timing chain. Would love to hear back thank you!
Long time since the video was made still awesome video just did timing in my vrt, but one question aren’t the cam caps supposed to face the left of the motor?
Hi, at 3:54 you say the cams are locked in place but the keyways for the sprockets are not at the top. I'm assuming you were installing the sprockets on the camshafts prior to locking the cams into place correct?
Great video, is it recommended to replace all new sprockets while doing the chain? 2 intermediate sprocket and 2 camshaft sprocket? Or I can reuse the existing?
Thanks for making this video I've always been a vw fan and Subaru tech- I love the vr6's but had been hesitant to get into them. This video made it a no brainer! Thanks for the video keep it up
Humble Mechanic, I'm about to get this done on my 2007 Q7 3.6 VR6. Is it possible to replace the sprocket off the crankshaft? Basically the lowest part where the lower chain rotates on? Would it even be necessary as long as it looks ok? Thanks.
Currently re-did a timing chain job for my 2001 12v vr6 since the first time I did not have it timed properly. The intermediate shaft seems to be a little bit off from the 6 o'clock position (the first time I did it, it was at 5-ish). Would that small amount throw the chains out of time? Should I take it out and make 6 and 12 at perfect 90 degrees?
Hi Charles I am planning to buy a friend of mine's golf 3 vr6 OBD 1 there are no timing chain noise but wanted to know if it's necessary to change the Chains to the single ones instead of the double what are the pros and cons of either All the Way from 🇿🇦
So is this the same thing on a 2001 Volkswagen Passat with an automatic transmission? I know it’s a V6 I believe a 30 valve I think if I’m correct. His car is sending low pressure oil to the camshaft. Every time he raises the the camshafts tensioner arm it squirts oil out of the plunger... I’m not sure if there is something wrong with the plunger or gaskets that seal that oil pressure sending unit or something. I my self own the more simplistic 04 VW 1.8T JETTA. I don’t want him to fall out of love with that car any suggestion or any tips would really help! He has the car torn apart we understand how the valves work in correspondence with the rest of the car but I guess I’m confused on what a properly timed camshaft looks like on a (01 VW PASSAT) Dual overheard Cam auto trans... I would really appreciate any advice I know your not going to like give a manual to tell me what to do. But I would really appreciate anything. And if needed maybe I could work out some sort of payment for your knowledge. Thanks!! Love your videos!
Hey Bud, What is the difference in the procedure from timing a 24 valve to a 12 valve if there is any difference at all? Also is this really tough to time if you keep the engine in as apposed to taking it out?
Is it common for the chain guides and tensioners to be made out of composite? Do other manufacturers make these out of metal? Or would the metal guides cause too much wear on the chain?
Hi My car (golf 1.4 tsi mk5 with 66000 mile) is showing error p3008. Initially the error code p000A appeared. I changed camshaft sensor then code p3008 came up. Most of the people are saying that timing chain needs to replace. It was fine , I just changed water pump because it was leaking, and new drive belts, with engine oil service , dsg service & spark plugs. After all this work when I started my car a code p000A appeared, then changed camshaft sensor, camshaft adjuster valve, after 5 minutes a new code p3008 came up, car starts but idle rough. When press acceleration it vibrates very heavily. What do you think might be the problem?
Maybe bit late but where can i find this timing chain kit complete? Here in the netherlands nothing to find and also by license plate because i have an usa import
Charles I'm currently waiting on a slot at my mechanics to get my chains and tensioners guides and spockets changed on my a6 3.0 tdi bmk code engine it has been rattling for almost 7k miles as I thought it was the serpentine belt running untrue due to a bad tensioner at the front..subsequently after waiting on a sunny day to change the rollers and tensioner and alternator pulley it was still rattling like a bag on nails until I stethoscope tested the cam cover and my heart almost stopped so Is there anything else that should be considered looking at while the engine is out as it is a huge job? And do you think the engine would have or could have any other damage relating to it having a slack chain it still idles and drives well apart from the noisy rattle (permanent rattle) not just start up. Your advice would be greatly appreciated as you are clearly a master in your field. Kind regards, Chris woods. I will be parts shopping this week the kit I plan to order is a FAI full kit for that engine code..are they trusted or do you have any alternative recommendations. Thanks.
Hello I have a question I know this is an old video but I hope it finds you. I have a 2004 Touareg with a vr6 in it. I’m trying to check timing without removing the motor. My chain has 1 copper link which lines up on the driverside cam and then my pulley lines up at the same time but they only line up like every couple rotations. Is this normal?
Hi I have a Eurovan 2001 VR6 and I made the same process of the timing chain, everything new and we follow the instructions of the book too, but the check engine light still coming up and says the same code, do you know why still with the same code?
I think I need to tackle this job on my vr6 The chain doesn’t sound the best, My question is can this still be done with the engine in the car? Or does the big old lump have to come out ?
Hey, I noticed that you used a head gasket spacer to drop the compression. I also want to add a spacer to my 12v vr6, and I have heard you have to modify the guides and tensioner, because of the extra height the spacer adds. It looked like you used stock hardware in this video. Did you have to do any modifications to get the spacer to work with your project? Thanks for any help!
Im rebuilding my 3.2L vr6 head. I took it to the machine shop for leaky valves so they can be redone and have the head vaccum check and resurfaced. When i rebuild the head, do i need to time the head and adjust the camshaft adjusters, or do i just rebuild the head, put cylinder 1 at TDC and throw the head on. Its my first time doing deep engine work like this. I have my repair manual at my side as well. any tips would be greatly appreciated, i don't wanna jack this up. Thanks.

Question im having issues with timing g my vr the bottom is timed great but as soon as I hook up the cams the timing goes off. are they different length upper chains?
I pulled my cylinder head on my VR6 GTI without setting it at TDC . I marked the chain and cam pulley teeth before removal but how do I make sure it goes back together the same way ? Or should I just rotate the crank pulley to TDC while the head is off all while trying to make sure the upper cam chain stays taunt , before reinstalling the head ?

Is there a video on proper timing on camshaft on 1.8t with the camshaft tensioner. I’m receiving a constant P0012 especially in the morning with having to start 3 times before it finally stays on. With VCDS I measured block 91 to read camshaft angle and was getting a -16kw at 1200rpm in the morning. I wanna make sure I’m either off a tooth but would like to see exactly how to time the chain. Thanks!
I have stumbled upon these God like videos! I now know who I can safely ask my question and get a purely knowledgeable based answer. I have a 2018 VW Atlas SEL with the 3.6L V6 (VR6) With 4motion. Are there any mods for this vehicle/motor? Would it be possible to turbo? Would it make a good fit? Basically I'm looking to add lots of horsepower and torque. So far I've seen 1 company do it to the 2.4L. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!
Awesome as usual always/reliable! Do you have a bb or a way I can get some advise? I used to have a 2 valve, I had an e2 chip, went the gm conversion to ign coil/spliced plug/coil wires, to lower the e2 advance I was able to expand plug gap with a massive boost to throttle response and avoid hot weather pi. Vr6 is just an awesome motor/sound w/T2 exhaust straight out Jetta 3 so no drone.
Loving your project. I miss my old 98 gti vr6. Hope everything continues to go smoothly.
Me too. That smooth train stopped when putting the engine in. That didn't go so well... LOL but it is in, that is all the matters
Can't wait to hear that baby rumble.
Very clear and straightforward.
Good video..well done.
Thank you
Charles, ever see the gear on the intermediate shaft wear or break? Have one where the teeth broke and exited through the side of the lower timing cover.
Hi humble mechanic! I have a 92 gti with a 93 vr6 corrado engine in it! My dad & I are working on it and right now the car is cranking but not starting. Before it stopped working it started running hot and leaking anti freeze so I’m wondering if it’s the water pump? If this even is something that would stop the car from turning on? Other thing I was thinking was the timing chain. Would love to hear back thank you!
1995 Golf GTI Vr6 I will try it to revive it thank you for this amazing video .
Do u need to prime the tensioner before install ? Thanks
Nice vid! 💪🏽 I would add folks the cam caps are numbered and specific to exhaust/intake don't cross them up
I call that idiot resistant...LOL..
I am actually going to do a separate video on installing the cams.
Thanks for the video keep it up
Very thorough and nice work!! The paint marks are a brilliant idea I’m going to use in the future.
Hi Charles
I am planning to buy a friend of mine's golf 3 vr6 OBD 1 there are no timing chain noise but wanted to know if it's necessary to change the Chains to the single ones instead of the double
what are the pros and cons of either

Or would the metal guides cause too much wear on the chain?
hi humble mechanic would you replace the cam phasers as well during a timing job
I wouldn't unless they were failing or suspect of failing
That is a great Vedic.I currently have a R36. I am wondering when should I change the timing chain? Thank you
Hi
My car (golf 1.4 tsi mk5 with 66000 mile) is showing error p3008.
Kind regards,
Chris woods.
Hey humble mechanic, if the crankshaft is lined up with the mark and the mark on the block where the rear main is, am I at TDC?
Hi I have a Eurovan 2001 VR6 and I made the same process of the timing chain, everything new and we follow the instructions of the book too, but the check engine light still coming up and says the same code, do you know why still with the same code?
I think I need to tackle this job on my vr6
The chain doesn’t sound the best,
My question is can this still be done with the engine in the car?
Thanks.
Hey Charles had a question, I just bought a 2000 beetle with the 1.8 ltr turbo and am trying to put a timing belt on but the belt the old belt was shredded so wasn't able to mark tdc, what is the easiest way to set timing? Thanks
Did the timing belt fail? 1.8 will bend valves in a heartbeat.
I like the marks you make smart if any novice in next 30 years messes with car good chance they will get it right now.
Great clear and confident building video👏🏻👏🏻.. one question 🤔.. i have a 3.2 BHE audi engine. Can i replaced the cam chain tensioner bolt without taking the engine apart?.. is it just an unbolt and replace item? Cheers
Question im having issues with timing g my vr the bottom is timed great but as soon as I hook up the cams the timing goes off. are they different length upper chains?
When can you tell if you chains need to be done? I also have a mk 4 r32
I pulled my cylinder head on my VR6 GTI without setting it at TDC . I marked the chain and cam pulley teeth before removal but how do I make sure it goes back together the same way ? Or should I just rotate the crank pulley to TDC while the head is off all while trying to make sure the upper cam chain stays taunt , before reinstalling the head ?
hello i need help
I opened the v6 engine and I didn't mark anything, I took out the chain and now I don't know the position of the crankshaft and camshaft, can you give me some advice on how to solve it, thank you.
This is a 2011 Porsche Panamera 3.6 v6
hey again mr. humble - IF the chain sleeves are a bit ....hmmm used, so that the chain might be a bit loose ( hard to explin in english ) hope you know wht i mean - THEN...can it affect the power? i mean dosent it move the inlet and outlet a bit, and therefor looses power ?
How hard is to to change a thermostat on a b6 passat? Planning on changing it this weekend.
love the video, so well explained, had a q, you say only turn the motor clockwise, righty tighty, why? what happens if you go left? or counter clockwise?
Cool video as usual. I wish my Audi B5 S4 would've come with the VR6 from the factory.
Hallo , i have golf 4 2.3 v5 150ps I replaced it already but the engine don't wanna turn on, I don't no why no electricity in the engine, so your Way its working on that's engine or its different?
Sorry I know my English it's bad, but maybe you can help me in this issue .
Fantastic video. Keep up the good work, will make it much easier when i get around to doing the same to my golf
Your job is great man
Hello @HumbleMechanic I have problem on passat b6 vr6 3.2 fsi.
On first cold start the engine suffer wile running, revs are not stable and blue smoke is available. After about 10 seconds, the revs are stabilize, and after that every new engine startup are ok until it's completely cold again.
Second symptom is during driving, If I hard step on pedal the car jerks until I stop accelerating.
Check engine code is P2293
Is that related to Timing Chains ?
Regards
Hi Charles can you post a video about doing the timing on a 24v vr6. It's like the R32 but I have the 2.8 version. BDE engine code.
TIA. Oh I'm busy turbo charging it with a 2mm spacer plate and forged rods and arp head studs.
Can you please provide a part number for the intermediate shaft screws at 4:55?
Awesome work, Charles!
can I use this video to help me time my rotary?
Thank you!
Is the 24v 4motion golf a similar setup
Hey man, where'd you get that red plate from? I'm wary of using the Schwaben plastic cam plate... Thanks!
AW I currently live in PDX, I would like some local assistance PDX/SEA with dependable headlight retrofit w/outer rings added w/shroud Morimoto’s Gen 3 Toyota 4R, affixing them properly, rather be involved than mail order of course…
Thanks
