  • HARMONIC DICTATION is one of the most challenging tasks for music students! It's hard enough hearing and dictating a single line of melody, let alone 4 parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) to discover what harmonies (chords) are being played!
EXPLANATION: • Intro to Harmonic Dict...
In the first part of this video, Dr. Watson shares an effective strategy for learning Harmonic Dictation, centered around short chord progressions of 3 or 4 chords called TONIC EXPANSIONS.
DRILL/PRACTICE: • Intro to Harmonic Dict...
In the second part of the video, a series of 18 practice chord progressions - tonic expansions - are presented for the music student to study them and practice with them. THE GOAL IS TO NOTATE THE BASS LINE FIRST, THEN THE SOPRANO LINE, THEN THE CHORD SYMBOLS (Roman numerals below the staff). All the answers are on screen, but eventually try doing each WITHOUT LOOKING. You can pause the video for as long as you need in order to work on each example.
ANSWER SHEET. Here are the 18 dictation examples played in the video, notated for you (and with the Roman numeral chords labeled):

Awesome stuff! Thank you very very much, I’ve been training my ear, having a blast with jazz solo transcribing stuff like Oscar Peterson, Hank Mobley, Cannonball Adderley, but I have a much harder time hearing left hand voicings and understanding the whole harmony. This is an efficient, effective way to get at the fundamentals. Exactly what I need!

Thanks for this. Do you have any helps for hearing and identifying intervals? I've used all the apps. I've been through Ear Training at the Juilliard School (evening program). And am no closer nor more accurate than when I started. Any help would be appreciated.
