  • Antigone (1967 - 1969)
    Original id: 1742
    Start date: 1 January 1967
    End date: 31 December 1969
Degree of relationship to ancient play: Adaptation
    Production notes:
In 1967 Brecht's adaptation of Antigone was in turn adapted by Judith Malina, co-founder of the experimental Living Theatre in New York, while she was in prison for political protest. Malina replaced Brecht's naturalistic prologue with a dance composition representing the battle between Thebes and Argos. The actors of the Chorus chanted and droned before dividing into antagonistic groups and circling each other in ritualistic dance. In a political gesture designed to provoke comparisons with the contemporary Vietnam War, the audience of Malina's Antigone was forced to enter the dramatic action, functioning as members of the Argive army that was attacking Thebes.

A bit rough round the edges, but quite amazing never the less. Reminds me of what Grotowski did in Poland back in the 70's. Wish people now'a days payed so much attention to the voicing of their plays. Purely at the sound level this is no less then a spoken opera. And the actions are pretty good too. They are well prepared. You don't see actors so devoted to their craft these days. Beck especially, his movements are so fluent, pure pleasure to watch him. The young people are all so very well in tune. I'm not especially fond of Becketts take on Antigone, but this is quite an experience, even from a low res video recording. Like with good music, the power is in the magnificent composition and performance.

This is not a performance from the 1960´s. The play was restaged by the Living Theatre in 1979 and this film is taken from a performance in February 1980, Bari/Italy. I know this well, because I´m in it.

Those jeans are from 1980. They did not have that style in the late 60's.

My god, this is incredible. I learned something new about Sophocles, about Bertolt Brecht, and about being a hippie in NYC in 1968!

@@latassingh I give you a proof. Look at 0:35 it says "Regia Televisiva (TV direction) Gigi (Luigi Spedicato)". Luigi Spedicato was born in 1953 and worked for Rai since 1979 to 1985. In 1967 he was 14 years old.

After almost 3 years since last I watched Signals Through Flames, I've been brought here again to their theatrical production whilst searching for Brecht's Antigone.
Could you please provide subtitles for Italian dialogues in this video?
Would be much appreciated. Thank you.

living theater produced a lot of bullshit. They never care about the play, they only want to go on with their old fashioned student theater style, shouting the text, senseless sounds, If Brecht would have been alive he would have prohibided the use of his play for such a non sense.
