I always thought the line, “I use my best colors for your portrait” was a way to describe how she puts herself together for him. I picture, her hair is done and her makeup is on and she’s trying to get him to notice and appreciate her.

I always took that line as her painting him in good light, talking him up on how well he still treats her years into their marriage. It also ties into the bridge like how he used to treat her, now he just tolerates her.

Your theory had me 💀😂 I think people were just recommending this after Champagne Problems because it’s equally heartwrenching and descriptive, but you’ve gone full swiftie mode and made unintended connections, and I love it. That’s what creative writing (and thinking) will do to you. 😉

An interesting concept you have there, and there could be a connection. Taylor’s said she wrote Tolerate it after reading the book Rebecca, which is about a young woman marrying a wealthy widower and then realizing how haunted he is by his late wife. I personally think this may also have been an early hint that all was far from well with Joe. The fact that it got coveted track five placement and gets this great production piece in the Eras Tour (you might want to consider reacting to that too) indicates it’s incredibly personal and emotionally resonant for her.
But it is interesting to consider this being a next chapter to Champagne Problems, with a guy who can’t really let go of the idea of ‘the one who got away’ after being so sure that she was the one.
That makes so much sense… her writing this after reading Rebecca.

The “where’s that man who’d throw blankets over my barbed wire” has definitely got to be about Joe based on the Invisible String lyrics about her mistakes being “wrapped in barbed wire” and “wool (blanket presumably) to brave the seasons). I always interpret the “best colours for your portrait” line to mean that she’s always trying to portray him in the best light, talking up his achievements etc and making him seem greater than he truly is

This song is inspired by Princess Diana and her relationship with Charles. He never really loved her and was basically forced to marry her. Camilla was his mistress throughout their entire marriage. Taylor got into watching The Crown during the pandemic and thus Tolerate It was born.
