I did this routine with three other friends during the early-1950. We were in our early teens & did an elaborate rendition that lasted about five minutes. We're Canadians on the Windsor side of the border, and took our little show to a popular TV show; I believe it was named the Auntie Dee show in Detroit, Michigan. It was a daytime TV teen dance show that featured various talents. We won first prize, and if I remember correctly we won a 45 RPM automatic record change player, some records etc.
Hi Earl, That's a great story. Windsor as you know is a music city due to it's proximity to Detroit. Hard to stop the radio waves. It's so cool that in the 50's hambone and other American culture rubbed off on a group of young teenagers from across the lake. Neat that you guys showed them the best of Canada. I bet there is archival TV footage of your performance. Now that would be fun to see! Thanks for your comment. Best.
My neighbor man used to do this for us when we were young kids. We grew up in Ohio, he grew up in South Carolina, we where about 7 or 8 years old when he taught us this, he was probably 60.. l'm 40 now... miss you Calvin
When I was in elementary in the mid 90s we did a whole unit on Hambone in music class I loved it then and I am still to this day so fascinated by it. I don’t remember it being imparted upon us that this was a quintessentially black art but knowing that now as an adult makes it all the more beautiful. I’m mixed and my boys are a quarter black and I am always looking for ways to expose them to part of their heritage and culture, I think I will show them this video and see if there are any others I can find to share with them.
My son just sent this video to me because he remembered me doing it for them when they were kids. I was a lik more relaxed with mine. I enjoyed his though.
