Hey Kevin! My name is Ryan Murphy, and I was the Marius in this performance. I appreciate the criticism, and know I definitely have some work to do on my upper-register vowels among other things. It was a high-pressure night, very loud, and I didn’t sing too well but it was still such a blast to be a part of. Celebrating the arts at a high school level is so so important!! Since I’m here, I’d just like to let you know that, as many performers have, I’ve seen a bunch of your videos and love your work on TH-cam! Thanks so much for your critique!!
We used to take theatre trips in high school and got given a very strict run down of theatre etiquette. Nothing annoys me more than going to the theatre and having some pain in the ass person scream, sing along, take pictures, say lines before the actors, or for the love of God stand up and clap along mid-show. I paid a few hundred dollars to see a professional production. Sit down, be quiet, clap at the appropriate times, and let everyone enjoy it.
@@KevinLynchMusic I once sat through Wicked with the person in front of me literally quoting Glinda for every single line. Turned out that she'd seen the show 6 times because Fiyero was being played by a former Australian Idol contestant. Just behave appropriately for the theatre people and have respect for the actors too! Theatres are designed to carry their voices out, but it also funnels you're right back into them. Some seats run at nearly $300 a ticket, times that by at least 2, plus parking, maybe even a new outfit or dinner out, and you could easily spend $1000 for 2.5hrs of entertainment. Worth it to me, but if you ruin that by being a pain in the butt I'm allowed to swat you in the face with my program!
I'm from the UK and I'm starting to see shit like this happening on the west end/tour so much more now with the big shows like Hamilton, Heathers, BOM, Waitress that we've had transfer recently and I'm sure DEH will be the same when it opens. It's such a shame since uk theatre etiquette used to be so good but we're losing it all with the arrival of the big Broadway shows since bway audiences are way more vocal than the uk so it kinda carries over with the shows.
You can also thank all the teenagers that love those musicals too. Don't get me wrong, I love that more younger people are getting into musical theater, but god dammit they do not know theater etiquette and are too immature.
Guitar Chick It’s not just the teens either. When I went to see Waitress in Toronto recently, latecomers who looked to be in their forties or fifties arrived after the first song, and our whole row had to get up to let the four of them in. That in itself would’ve been fine, but one of the guys started crinkling wrappers, SLOWLY unwrapping some candies. Then he opens a fucking red bull, and the pop/fizzing sound it made was so distracting! After intermission, they arrive just as the lights go down, and so the rest of us had to get up again. They were still talking as the scene was starting, so I nudged one of them passive-aggressively on the arm, and that seemed to do it. Not to mention the multiple other latecomers who had to be taken down the rows during the show. I’m pretty sure I even saw a person go down and sit in their front row seat DURING THE FINAL SONG.
Frozen on Broadway was the worst theater experience I've ever had. There was a group of goths to my right going "Yass queen!" and "Hit it gurl!" every couple minutes and a family behind me (whose kids were kicking me and my friend's seats and singing every song and reciting every line with the actors on stage at the same time.) I held in my burning anger, but my friend didn't. He went "shhhh!" to the kids and their parents snapped, cussed, and threatened us (we are teenagers btw). The cursing and threatening went on for the rest of the 1st act and we had to inform the usher so they wouldn't threaten us anymore. They finally got kicked out at the end of the 2nd act and that was the loudest that I clapped during the show. Frozen was a mediocre show imo but it's super disrespectful to the actors onstage, the technicians who did a fabulous job (the tech was amazing), and especially the other audience members who paid top dollar for a Broadway show. I have no tolerance for these "concert singalong" people. Shut the hell up. If you want to sing, sing at a singalong or karaoke bar or something. Dont ruin one of my favorite art forms. Ted Talk over. Mic drop.
yea i was in front of kid at frozen too who sang along and whined the whole time, i know its kid friendly but i paid a lot of money to hear the actors sing not your four year old
Yeah just keep the boring people in who want to ruin people’s only chance to sing along to Disney songs.rather than theatre it should be renamed boring old farts day out
Matthew Mattocks how can you sing at home it’s hardly the same singing along to TH-cam on a phone as singing along to a full cast singing with surround sound.audience pays, cast get paid,I don’t see why people should pay to be told they can’t enjoy themselves.cinemas do sing along nights so theatres could do it too but they just want to take people’s money and don’t care if people can’t enjoy it because they are too busy concentrating on not daring to sing along while enjoying something. while it’s not the same,if I’m doing karaoke and someone wants to join in they get told off but I always encourage it by passing them the mic, people wanting to sing along shows they are enjoying it and even as a very tone deaf karaoke singer that’s a good thing.overpaid broadway stars should be happy people are having fun for their often 100+ per ticket
@@ryanredmond87 Its not that people cant enjoy themselves, it's the entitlement that some people think that their "enjoyment" (ie. singing, screaming, kicking seats) is more important than the enjoyment of others and drawing peoples focus from the story. It also draws focus from the actors onstage doing their job and really frustrates other people who are trying to watch. There are some shows with lots of audience interaction, and I'm not saying that you shouldn't have fun at shows, that's why people to to theater, to have fun. But dont let your fun ruin other people's experiences, especially when they pay top dollar.

it’s the freddy awards. it’s for high school theatre in the lehigh valley. there are 30 schools that participate and i was in Freedom’s production of Anything Goes in 2019. it’s honestly the best thing ever
Nick Kasander thank you. Like honestly, in the context of that night the screaming isn’t rude it’s actually all in good fun and supportive in my opinion. I feel like it’s just one of those things you have to be there to understand.
Thank you for reacting to my school! I honestly think that we did a way better job in our own auditorium, but thank you for reacting to the performance!
AMEN about the yelling. OMG now days a character comes on stage and WOOHOO the crowd goes nuts. I can understand on Broadway if its their last night performing then of course everyone does goes nuts esp if they hit notes that usually are not done. But geesh you pay big moola to see a show and a song will start or either end and you cant hear them singing even if they are wearing a mic. I think they should put a etiquette page in all programs and have them read it as well during the announcements when a show starts. Great vid otherwise.
If you've seen the Prom boot, then it is constantly screaming and cheering, but that's because it was recorded on their closing night. I agree, cheering should only happen on something like closing night, or at the end of a song.
im here nearly 3 years later and ive been binging your videos, bloody hilarious. im in love with how the first 1:40 secs are literally just you screaming omdddd 🤣
So happy to see the Freddy's on here! However... I have zero issue with the audience here because like, that's the ENTIRE point of the Freddy Awards. We're celebrating high school theater and the accomplishments of our wonderfully talented friends, not there to watch shows. The audiences are always very respectful during the actual performances throughout the year at schools. So hell yeah, everyone should be cheering loudly at the awards! There is SO much love and support in the crowd. When you're there in person, you really understand that energy. (I also can't believe it's been NINE years since I won mine holy crap I'm old lol)
I’m literally a minute into this video but I’m already compelled to tell this story. so last year’s fall play at my school was a stage adaptation of fahrenheit 451 (written by ray bradbury himself). at my school, the sophomores read that book in class, so we had an in-school performance for the entire grade. and boy was it one of the worst experiences of my life. they were so loud and obnoxious I literally would stand offstage apologizing to my scene partners because it was so disrupting. they went absolutely wild about the abortion comment that montag makes and would yell things like “go ian!!” or “JOSIAH”. we had a q&a afterwards and it was apparent that a good portion of them didn’t pay attention. I don’t think any of them realized how damaging that could be to someone’s self esteem. I loved that show, would probably rank it number one out of every show I’ve ever done, but that specific performance was a nightmare.
i saw mamma mia at my highschool and the lady next to me kept singing along with the songs and was also making fun of a disabled man in the audience. i wanted to smack her over the head so bad.
I blame mtv's broadcast of "Legally Blonde" for the poor etiquette. True story: When "Hair" came to Chicago , i sat next to two folksvdressed as hippies who sang along and waved their arms during Act 1. I mentioned this to an usher during intermission...and that didnt during Act 2. Point being: Chicago ushers dont mess around.
I was at Avenue Q in March and the guy next to me was sweaty and smelly and sang horribly. It was especially distracting during Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist (my favorite song)
My school is doing les mis this fall and I’d love for you to react to our performance. Do you think you’d be willing to react to another high school les mis?
I saw DEH to see Jordan Fisher and this one FUCKING TEENAGER NEXT TO ME screamed as soon as he made it on stage, “I LOVE YOU JORDAN” I almost ripped her Playbill in half- and while in Waving Through a Window she sang to it as if it was a sing-a-long concert. I SWEAR I WAS GONNA PUNCH HER.
So a guy in my High School Production of Music Man invited his hockey buddies to see the show, and as soon as Harold and Marion kissed, there was an uproar from their section. We were just like, will you just shut the fuck up!
I just started seeing your videos and I adore music and musicals but when it comes to how to read music or the technical things I have no clue, so I love seeing your videos and honestly learning from them!
We saw a VERY good high school production of Bonnie and Clyde at ThesCon and it was like a freaking sitcom, on one hand, the enthusiasm was nice, but in the other hand, SHUT UP!!! It's so good and I want to hear it!
THANK YOU. Theater etiquette is thrown out the window with recent Broadway shows. My friend went to a few shows in the past year (it might have been Prom?) and she complained to me about all the excessive screaming and yelling. It's really sad :(
I went to see Grease a few years back and the audience was awful. They sang along loudly with every song, even the solos, as if it was a concert. I hated it, such poor theatre etiquette and completely distracted me from the actors on stage. I get that grease is one of those musicals that everyone knows, but their finale number following the bows is a mashup of the main songs in the show and that is when you are encouraged to get up and singalong. Quite a few musicals with upbeat songs (like mamma Mia and six) do that at the end so that you can have fun and get involved and sing along, but without ruining the whole show.
One of the WORST (and I mean WORST) audience experiences I’ve EVER had in theater was when I went to go see Cats… you know the big moment in Memory reprise, everyone does… PEOPLE WERE CLAPPING AND CHEERING OVER HER! I WAS SO LIVID! I WANT TO BE AMERCED IN THIS NUMBER AND YA’LL RUINED IT!!! She tried to belt over the crowd to but then they just got louder and just my god… this is a professional theater experience, ya’ll should know better! It just made me so upset because that’s one of my favorite moments and the first time I saw it live I had it ruined just because people couldn’t wait until the end of the song. Sorry I’m just really mad about it still lol.
If you think the whole people screaming and clapping too early thing is new, listen to Ethel Merman's closing night of Hello Dolly from 1970. The audience won't shut the fuck up. Theatre etiquette sucks now but also seems to be "overlooked" for popular performers. Just saying.
Lols when you mentioned the end of defying gravity and having people scream over it I couldn’t stop laughing. But honestly at a show that would really be awful.
The people sitting in the audience of my theater camp showcase had better etiquette than the people in the video.( by the way I would submit a video but there way too long).
I once watched a video of some theatrical awards show in Europe and all the Americans were commenting about how rude the audience was for being quiet during the performance. Like...no. That's fucking human decency.
I was at the Les Miserables staged concert in London a few weeks back, the people in front were swaying side to side, kissing each other, talking to each other, leaning forward and blocking my view, putting their heads on each others shoulders, completely unable to keep still. One even checked their texts during the performance. Also typically in the UK there there even more traditional etiquette rules . Luckily most people behaved, I was unfortunate to be seated behind those people. Plus we were near the front of the dress circle, considered the best seats in the house and there are people who won't appreciating where they were. There are people in terrible seats that would do anything for the seats those annoying people were in. But at least most of the audience waited to clap until they finished singing and stand at the end of one day more and the epilogue (the suitable places)
It's an interesting problem at the start there. Generally in musical theatre I would agree that people should shut the hell up and listen, ideally in absolute silence and without moving a muscle, but also one of my favourite things in the world is a Wicked cast change show (in the UK at least) where people do cheer loudly mid-song, or partway through the long final words of certain songs, and the cast do stray from what's written a little, and are expecting the response. I feel sorry for the people who just happened to book tickets for that night without knowing, but also I will fight anyone who tries to take my cast change performances away from me. 😆 Mostly, normal performances are well behaved, although since COVID, both Glinda and Elphaba get small cheers when they first appear where they didn't before.
I saw Hamilton on tour and spent good money on nice seats. A tween looking girl sat next to me and sang along to the whole first song. I didn’t wanna deal with that shit for 3 hours, so I turned to her and said “can you shut the fuck up? That is so disrespectful.” And she kept her mouth shut for the rest of the show. I guess I’m taking after you Kevin?
Your explanation of how the Thenardiers are supposed to sing is exactly why Madame Thenardier is my dream Les Mis character. And every person in this audience pisses me off. Like seriously.... they drove me nuts.
I am right there with you, Dude. I don't even like to listen to live music anymore cuz of all the screaming. You can't hear the artist over all that 💩! I hate that 💩.
I saw Book of Mormon here in Denver when it started its tour. I lucked out getting a single ticket, so I was super excited, even if it was in the balcony. Right next to me were these two high school girls who were doing their own little dances and singing along with the show. I was distracted the whole time, I was so mad. Just sit there, let the paid actors do their thing, and you sit there and watch them.
You shouldn't be allowed to scream unless you're in actual pain, getting assaulted/kidnapped And maybe trying to get through to a stupid person You're too harsh in my opinion and it's not just entertaining, but I agree with what you said
Even when performing on stage I love the applause but it just pisses me off when it’s not the appropriate time! I’d love to share with you what I’ve been working on but can’t fully show it because of your cheering Also great video :)
I saw the lightning thief on tour, and It was great. But there were these teenage kids behind me, and they were singing the lyrics sort of quietly, but when you notice them singing, that's all you can hear. It was so annoying
Hey Kevin, my high school is doing Nine for the musical, and if you haven’t listened to it already, I think you would love it. The music is beautiful, and very thematic :) Its also a little more obscure at the moment so I thought you might enjoy
This reminds me of when I went to see Beetlejuice and any time a character entered or hit a slightly high note the audience would scream for two minutes
I was in Les Mis this summer and our directors drilled into us the ‘the time is now the day is here’ timing. I also got hit with the flag every night during this song.
I know how you feel. I can’t stand when performances are ruined by screaming. I recently went to my first showing of hairspray and I still don’t even know what the hell was going on from how much people screamed. SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!
hi kevin!! my school also participated in the freddy awards. we won small school for our performance of Tuck Everlasting. also this was one of my favorite performances at the freddys this year. the screaming was a bit too much and i had a headache the whole time due to it.

I mentioned this to an usher during intermission...and that didnt during Act 2. Point being: Chicago ushers dont mess around.
IMO, If you start clapping before a song/act finishes it's basically telling the performers 'okay you've done enough, I'm bored, move on now'.
I love how particular you are. THIS is why I love working with you, Kevin!
Ok I'm sorry, but when you get pissed off it's too funny x3. You have a voice that can cut through any teenage crowd my man, wow xD. Magnificent
I was at Avenue Q in March and the guy next to me was sweaty and smelly and sang horribly. It was especially distracting during Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist (my favorite song)
You made me spit my lunch all over my desk. SO funny!
My school is doing les mis this fall and I’d love for you to react to our performance. Do you think you’d be willing to react to another high school les mis?
I don’t know, it’s no Blacklick. That shit was boss.
Kevin losing his shit over les mis is the best
Great job! I was laughing a lot, and I even learned a few things regarding musical theatre vocal technique! Thanks so much for making this video!
I don't know if you've done a video on this-- but what are your opinions on The Drowsy Chaperone?
So a guy in my High School Production of Music Man invited his hockey buddies to see the show, and as soon as Harold and Marion kissed, there was an uproar from their section. We were just like, will you just shut the fuck up!
I just started seeing your videos and I adore music and musicals but when it comes to how to read music or the technical things I have no clue, so I love seeing your videos and honestly learning from them!
I’ve sat in that theatre before!!! And I’m going to have the chance to perform in this same award show thing. I’m so excited! Like so Kevin can see!
Kevin Lynch yelling is what we call the singer's pocket.
Kevin reacts a lot to Les Miz and i love it
We saw a VERY good high school production of Bonnie and Clyde at ThesCon and it was like a freaking sitcom, on one hand, the enthusiasm was nice, but in the other hand, SHUT UP!!!
I love this guys obsessions and music critics. 😂
This is why I prefer high school plays to musicals. People are always silent during the plays.
OMG..... You give me Nikkocado Avocado flashbacks with your theatrical anger.😅
Just saying.
yo i was the javert thanks for feedback i feel yah on dat
Lols when you mentioned the end of defying gravity and having people scream over it I couldn’t stop laughing. But honestly at a show that would really be awful.
5:27 that g#5 though
Couldn’t agree more about audiences. I’ve walked out of shows when that screaming starts. More of the incivility in the country
Let them emote! Kevin, let the kids go crazy!
I CAN SEE EASTON FROM MY BACKYARD. I WATCHED THIS LIVE ON TV
This was the reason that my school stopped doing previews
I guess I’m taking after you Kevin?
ahhhh he liked my comment!!
AHHH IM SO EXCITED. I literally remember watching this and it was pretty good.
I love the stress he put on rhythm, it’s so true.
I love it

Unrelated to the video but I've been saying twat like tweaat for ages and now i find out its twaat and my world is shattering 😭
I thought it was pronounced twat not twot
Your explanation of how the Thenardiers are supposed to sing is exactly why Madame Thenardier is my dream Les Mis character.
And every person in this audience pisses me off. Like seriously.... they drove me nuts.
I fucking love you, my fellow ranting lunatic!
I hope to god every audience member who screamed sees this video.
I am right there with you, Dude. I don't even like to listen to live music anymore cuz of all the screaming. You can't hear the artist over all that 💩! I hate that 💩.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
I saw Book of Mormon here in Denver when it started its tour.
Lol he heard one second of the first video and lost it!!! Hahaha wow 😟
You shouldn't be allowed to scream unless you're in actual pain, getting assaulted/kidnapped
And maybe trying to get through to a stupid person
You're too harsh in my opinion and it's not just entertaining, but I agree with what you said
Even when performing on stage I love the applause but it just pisses me off when it’s not the appropriate time! I’d love to share with you what I’ve been working on but can’t fully show it because of your cheering
Also great video :)
I WAS AT THE FREDDYS FOR THIS PERFORMANCE AHHHH BUT LIKE I GET WHAT YOU MEAN AHAHAHAHAHA
This is literally me when people at church clap after we finish a hymn, an anthem or psalm.
I saw the lightning thief on tour, and It was great. But there were these teenage kids behind me, and they were singing the lyrics sort of quietly, but when you notice them singing, that's all you can hear. It was so annoying
why is javert SCREAMING
Catherine Horowitz igu man
The only times I’ve ever cheered in a theater before the end was when Jailen Josie hit that insane high note in spongebob. That’s it.
"Jesus f-ing Christ on a Cracker." Please put that on a t-shirt. V-neck, large. Thanks.
You sound like my dad when he was watching the Jesus Christ Superstar Live special a few years ago.
"Stop screaming!"
Hey Kevin, my high school is doing Nine for the musical, and if you haven’t listened to it already, I think you would love it. The music is beautiful, and very thematic :) Its also a little more obscure at the moment so I thought you might enjoy
feel like i was listening to a teacher of mine here, im learning stuff 😭
This reminds me of when I went to see Beetlejuice and any time a character entered or hit a slightly high note the audience would scream for two minutes
I was in Les Mis this summer and our directors drilled into us the ‘the time is now the day is here’ timing. I also got hit with the flag every night during this song.
I agree with you. That screaming gets on my nerves.
"I WANNA HEAR THE FUCKER"
Kevin Lynch
-2019
I love your angry moments bro
I know exactly how u feel about people in the audience that do shit like that. It's annoying
