The akward "everything looks like a set or soundstage" look is not Snyder. Those are Whedon made, WB forced reshoots. Whedon reshoot 80 pages of the script...at about a minute a page, Whedon reshot 1:20 out of 1:59 runtime.

This movie is indefensible. It's a failure on every level. It's a travesty that this was the first movie called "Justice League".
At least now people will see that this movie is mostly Joss Whedon, and not just a recut like people kept insisting lol

WB begged Nolan to be their Feigie and he reluctantly agreed to produce MoS. He disagreed with Snyder over the killing of Zod and stepped away afterwards. Surprised you guys didn't know this.

Seems like there’s a lot of history being forgotten. They keep saying Snyder had a vision (laid out in BvS), and that they should have let that vision play out. Thats not what I remember in the news and interviews at the time. I remember Snyder getting in touch with Nolan and creating an idea for what Superman could be in the modern/real world. Thats what they did, essentially, and even though people were angry a the destruction, it was a different take, and generally liked. Notice how there were no references to a bigger universe (except a few easter eggs nobody really noticed), no mention of kryptonite (Snyder was adamant about this, saying that it has been overdone in the past, and wanted no part of it, and yet it is central to BvS), and all of it was as grounded as possible. Then, he announced a sequel to Man of Steel. That sequel eventually turned into BvS, at the request of WB, but Snyder maintained that it was a sequel to MoS, and Superman would be the protagonist. Then, the execs saw the movie, and loved Batman and decided the movie needed more Batman and less Superman, and eventually the movie turned into a Batman/Justice League prequel. That was never the plan. Snyder was forced to create an entire Universe in one movie. Then, after all the backlash, they didn’t even go with the ideas set up in BvS, and gave us Justice League, which is a terrible movie. All of this without mentioning how they changed Wonder Woman (which was written by Snyder, I believe), Suicide Squad, and Aquaman, trying their best to move away from the dark Snyder tone, with the only moderate success being WW. Shazaam is the only movie, aside from MoS, that was allowed to be its own thing from the start. Everything else has been meddled with and failed. So, no, none of this was Snyder’s original vision.j
DanV900 My comments are not just about money, neither is success determined only by money, not to mention that gross sales have to take many other factors into account before being considered a success. Suicide Squad, even making as much as it did and even winning an oscar, is universally hated, and forced WB to change plans, yet again (leaving the Joker aside, for example). But, none of this is the point I am making. I may be wrong in terms of defining success, but my point was simply that none of what has happened was ever part of Snyder’s original visionz

The problem with the DCEU isn't that they didn't start with solo films. I don't understand why Nick is so fixated on that.
Tbh i think they could've started with a JL movie like JL War, i thought that did a good enough job introducing the characters.
I hope after the Flashpoint movie, we can get a proper cinematic universe going. I mean the DCEU is doing better because they doing what they should have done in the first place, make standalone solo films before connecting them.

It's not THE reason but it absolutely is a big part of what is wrong with the movies. They wanted what Marvel had but didn't want to build up to it. I think they relied too heavily on people's familiarity with Superman and Batman, while at the same time not doing those characters justice.
It is a huge problem, though. Why should we care about any of these characters if they haven’t had time to develop? It feels so slapped together

As a big DC nerd like Greg it does hurts my heart a little that if wb and dc took the time to actually build out this universe like marvel did with the mcu we could've gotten movies for Nightwing, Titans, Teen Titans, justice league dark and maybe even a jason todd movie and a actual good green lantern movie.
DC is giving us solid and decent standalone movies after Justice League, I wish they would have done that sooner, they’re planning to soft reboot the DCEU with the Flash, and hopefully they learned what worked and what didn’t.
The scene with Batman, the thief, and the parademon should've gone exactly 1 second longer than it did. Just long enough to refocus on the guy in the background go, "Wait, who the fuck is Alfred?"

Nick is totally right! People who say that all of the DCU is dark and fucked up have only seen the Nolan movies (which are great for what they do), and maybe read Frank Miller Batman and The Killing Joke. That is not all of DC!! Look at the Teen Titans, The Flash, Young Justice, Green Lantern, Justice Society...yeah there are darker parts of the DCU like Batman, the Question, or the Vertigo side with Hellblazer etc. but that‘s not what builds the universe. The light majority is what gives the darker side weight.
This is the Greg I’ve been waiting for this whole time!

Random note: I don’t think Mindhunter was cancelled after season two. 😝 They said it’s coming back, but David Fincher is working on a movie, so it might take longer than usual.
If Zack was able to finish this I guarantee it would have been a better movie. There are still ppl that liked man of steel and bvs, they would have liked this too. Instead no one liked this movie. Now that Zack is actually bringing his vision to life in the HBO Snydercut I'm 100% confident it will be a solid improvement from this Frankenstein of a movie.
And if the Snydercut does end up being amazing somehow they absolutely should make a mini docu series about this for HBO great idea Andy

Im gonna be straight i love these guys and try my hardest not to be negative but im genuinely finding it rough trying to get through any of these, its not about nick not having his say it’s the fact it seems to be only nick who gets to have his say. Couldn’t even finish batman v superman review or the man of steel one because in both greg is trying to get through the plot and literally every half a sentence nick jumps in, first with what he thinks is wrong with the scene, then how he thinks the scene should have been then film making 101. It would be fine if it was nick doing the plot but the problem is andy/tim even kevin don’t talk over everyone it’s just nick

JK SIMMONS got jacked & worked out for his awesome show COUNTERPART on Starz! It was an amazing thriller about 2 alternate universes in a cold war with each other! He did a lot of action stuff in it, highly recommend anyone reading this go and watch the 2 seasons, its a bummer it was cancelled because it ends on an amazing cliffhanger! 2 JK SIMMONS for the price of one! 👍🏾

Nick's point on the contradictory tones that should be between Batman and Superman. I agree. But if you look at the arrowverse, each show has a unique tone. Arrow has a darker Batmanesque tone. Flash has a brighter Superman type show. Legends of Tomorrow have a more comedic tone like suicide squad should be. I think the solution is that the DC movies need to be comfortable with multiple tones across multiple movies.

This is why I liked the Fox XMen movies original trilogy….it had the perfect balance of light heartedness bit still maintained its grit.

This in review is one of the most infuriating ones to me. This movie is a Frankenstein of a mess. And to me it seems like Tim and Nick and kev say its not so bad only because its less than 2 hours and its straightforward. I listened to these guys give props to Zach Snyder in the Man of Steel in review for trying to something very different and it may bot have worked in the end but kudos for trying. And with this it seems like not trying to be inventive with these monumental characters and just having the most basic plot as if this is a 20 minute epidode of the the Justice League cartoon in the middle of its season taking down a nobody cares villain to fill out the season. This is THE JUSTICE LEAGUE. Hearing Greg in this just spit facts and the others just keep saying no no its not that bad is so infuriating its sickening. Theres more to a movie than the runtime, and yea the universe WB has built even before this movie is super flawed for sure. But you dont cut bait and run IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIES PRODUCTION. And to hear these guys somewhat rewarding that really irks me to no end.

Here's the issue with Superhero movies.
1 - Nobody remembers The Will To Power by Friedrich Nietzsche (who created the concept of the "Ubermensch" which influenced society in two major, diametrically opposing ways.
2 - Joel and Jerry were Jewish kids in 1938 when they created Superman.
It's fucking depressing because there's clearly a reason why Superheroes are big now, but nobody wants to address why.

Has it been confirmed that Henry Cavill won't return as Superman? I remember that one day when all that news came out about it, but they never seemed to be confirmed.
Even as someone who isn't a DC fan, I would be really disappointed if that was the case.
Squad goals
It's funny, Greg has issues with how they portrayed Superman as more human. He doesn't like that Superman has conflict with in him in these movies. He wants superman to be the always do good perfect super hero. Not that these movies succeed in the portrayal of superman but, I like the IDEA'S of having superman be conflicted about saving people. I like that internal strife that the real world would cause.
@Acrobatic Hatchet Superman is very personal to him. I get it, I was just saying the thing he dislikes about the movies are kind of the things I like. Although the movies are still very bad, I liked the "idea's" they tried to explore in Man of Steel, they just executed poorly.

To be honest, sometimes you need to laugh to keep from crying. I really wanted the DCEU to work and it became a travesty. I wanted it to work so they could rival Marvel and then do a Justice League vs.Avengers movie, now that's the furthest from a possibility to me. Smh.
I would argue a superhero franchise can be grounded in realism, as long as they are kept somewhat seperate from that realism through realistic means. For example, in the MCU, most of the superheroes are not saving people from burglarers or house fires or tornadoes or earthquakes or space shuttle explosions.... they are fighting against greater (unrealistic) threats to a way of life. The MCU leans heavily on freedom and American culture, that they are fighting to preserve a way of life.

Sad. We are back in old school Last Jedi territory. So much reductive speculation, snark and negativity. So many assumptions about why things happened they way they did. So many opinions stated as fact. All the info is out there as to what the Snyder Cut was going to be and the plan for Justice League 2, 3 and 4. There are so many breakdowns that show exactly what was reshot and what was cut.

Who wrote the opening scene? Whedon, it was a reshoot hence the mustache. If theres a mustache removed its Whedon.
He also wrote and shot that awful first Batman Scene.
"Snyders take on Superman in 'Man of Steel' is bad" is subjective and a fair opinion but not a solid basis to argue why this film doesn't work.

I realize thats meant as a hyperbolically humorous critique, not literal, but where has it been said that he pressured anyone to support him? Its pretty irresponsible to imply anything of that nature without actual proof.
I really love when "In Review" is fun. Not angry and sarcastic. You guys have reviewed So Many bad films without resorting to this level of negativity.
Bottom line, Snyder had a vision, WB panicked.
Trying to lay JL at his feet knowing his film was much longer with completely different arcs (complete arcs for Cyborg, Aquaman and Flash and Green Lantern Yeah... GL), Superman resurrection and ending is truly unfair. The Snyder Cut might be great or terrible but thats not the point. WB and Whedon cut this film to pieces, reshot more than 15% including all of Superman except the main fight in the park.
I really do love you guys, I support you guys but the first 30 minutes of this In Review was a mess.

I've never walked out on a movie but this is the closest I've ever come. As someone who liked BvS and was interested in the direction they were trying to go with everything, I fucking hate this shit fucking movie.
even though I doubt the Snyder cut would be much better if at all, I would respect the film much more if the film committed to a plan. this film is so generic and boring. it isn’t dark and real enough but it isn’t light and fun either. they tried to course correct and turned straight into an ice burg

They said they will probably do a Batman in review before The Batman comes out next year. They are doing Christopher Nolan in review soon, but they aren’t including the batman movies.
I'm with Greg 100% that this is the movie that really fucked everything, cuz yes bat v sup was not mcu and people didnt like it, but if it continued down that trajectory it would be in a fine 2nd place a lot like xbox is to playstation but still successful, and instead they panicked and gave us a movie that serves no one. Nick in here complaining about how Superman's costume looks underlit. Yeah cuz it was BLACK... Again to Greg's point RELEASE THE SNYDER CUT. As for the aspect ratio, I don't believe Zack. he didn't shoot this movie in full frame. The original trailers when he was still director are all 21:9. They clearly cropped his original intended vision because JOSS LOVES FULL FRAME.
Also people need to stop saying Suicide Squad bombed. That shit made 700mil in ticket sales and over a billion in merch which is CRAZY.
This movie is trash, but I feel like you guys are picking at things that wouldn't bother you in other movies. Characters finding shit out on the news? Happens in MCU movies a lot. Specifically Scarlett witch and Vision finding out about the attack in New York in Infinity War on some random screen in the street. Not knowing or caring about the terrorists in the beginning that Wonder Woman fought? What about the atm robbers in homecoming?
That said, when a movie is trash, the little things that grind on you is amplified, whereas it's easy to ignore in a great movie.
You are confusing bad writing with darkness
1. Nick should do more research before bashing Zack for all of the terrible decisions made by the studio.. Confirmed by Fabian Wagner, barely 10% of Zack's footage is in Josstice League, the rest is reshoots, and thats AFTER they cut out 90 minutes of Zack's original cut.. Also, the fact that NIck thinks you need individual movies to set up JL just because Marvel did it is such a terrible take.
2. Nick still misses the point, reason, and arc for why Batman killed people in BVS, and therefore misses the point of BVS entirely.
3. Wow, Nick REALLY doesn't understand Zack's DC universe.
4. Whedon was responsible for that terrible song and montage at the beginning, not Zack.
