    Good review of this specific paint. I'd like to see a thorough review, side by side, of all the major paints. I know that would be a big job, but I also think a lot of people would like that and you'd see a big following. Thanks.

      LPJ Models Just split it up by range/brand. If you send an email to every major brand with a link of this video and tell them that you’d also do an in depth review if they send you a sample, I’m sure almost all of them would.

    I use Mission Model Paints and I like them lots but there are two BIG problems:
    1. The Polyurethane additive has a VERY short shelf life. With the bottle properly closed and stored in a dark cool drawer mine quickly turned to a thick gloop.
    2. You can wash dry paint off your model with WATER. Seriously, try doing that swatch test with water (instead of MMP thinner) on an old brush, give the paint a little scrub and see what happens.
    My conclusion is they are lovely paints, but flawed.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mr Models Man, I think all paints have a trade off of some description. Tamiya for example, when using tamiya I always get texture from bouncing paint particles, like on the side of a fuselage when spraying the wing root. And if you see my other videos I spray very close so it's not drying in the air !
      Mig and ak are very weak I have found, they dont like oil thinners and I always had them lift when weathering.
      Laquers are great but you have the stink and you need a booth or a mask.
      With mission models I have found they work well for me, I have heard about the poly going bad but this hasn't happened to me, I dont keep it in the fridge, we'll see what british summertime does to it !
      I always clear coat between major layers so water affecting the paint doesnt give me much issue !
      Thanks for the comment it's good to talk paint

    • @mrmodelsman
      @mrmodelsman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lpjmodels I agree that there's always a trade off - no paint 'has it all'.
      The issue of MMP being easily compromised by mere water is just an inconvenience really. Now I am aware of the weakness I can accommodate it and work around it.
      On the other hand, the abysmal shelf life of the poly additive angers me. MMP suggest on their website that the product will deteriorate if left in bright light and in the heat (and so are aware of its limited shelf life) but say it will last if stored and cared for properly. From my experience, that's nonsense. The product is not fit for use and, quite frankly, I feel ripped off by Mission Models. From the comments in this video alone, I'm clearly not alone in having shelf-life problems with this additive.

      @duckhunt1058 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lpjmodels I think you'll be ok. This paint is tricky when doing this. I just go slow and don't use a lot of water to do it.
      If you're chipping the Dunkgengelb you'll notice a discoloration from the water. Not to worry thought it kinda gives it a neat effect. But will go mostly go away when dry and with filters and weathering it's hardly noticeable.
      I would like to see your results when you get another video up.
      Good luck and enjoy.

    Thank you for the video. Is the Poly really necessary? Many people say the bottle get useless after being used just after a few months. I hope the paints can last longer on the shelf.

    • @VideoCesar07
      @VideoCesar07 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fortunately the poly is not necessary. From their site:
      "MMP Polyurethane Intermix is an acrylic non-solvent based paint additive. After reducing your paint with MMP Thinner add one or two drops of MMP Polyurethane. Less is more! MMP Poly will increase flow from the airbrush , slower drying times , added blending times for fine brush painting , durability and increased leveling properties. In addition you will find a durable finish with a slight eggshell finish which is perfect for washes eliminating the need for further clear coating."
      I have had their paints for over a year and they are still fine. The poly though I found out the hard way after not using them for about 3 months that it had just hardened in the bottle. The cost isn't bad up front but if you have a bottle and only use about 1/5 before it goes off then it's a expensive investment.

    Good review James. I haven't used Mission yet but they appear to be pretty good. The only thing I don't care for is having to add all the extra products like The Poly and having to use they're specific thinners. What I like about Tamiya, Ak, Mig and Vallejo is they can be mixed with other brands of thinners and spray great... and I have a mountain of them. I thought the metallics looked best with the gloss black under coat as well. Congrats on getting to 11,000 now. Cheers M8!

    Excellent review mate. I've been using them for a year or so and they would overall have to be my favourite acrylic. That said, I can get the metallic's to work, but I think Vallejo have them beat on this with their Metal Color range which is easier to use and gives the same or better finish and is acrylic based. I love their primer, but its very expensive compared to other brands when you consider the size container it ships in, but then again, it sprays beautifully as you demonstrated. I've had one bottle of paint from them that seemed to be mixed wrong from the factory. It was supposed to be tire black, but had a distinctly green shade to it, even when I thoroughly shook the bottle before using. I've found they spray with the poly, nearly as good as lacquers and they are a very controllable paint. I also love the white paint for its coverage and control. With the clears I've have only used their gloss clear, but found it easy to work with and very tough once it had dried. I was able to wet sand it with a fine sandpaper and then use a scratch remover car polish on it and got a nice gloss finish. I've also sprayed the gloss over plastic I tinted and its smoothed out the finish very nicely on the clear parts. You can apparently dip clear parts too in the gloss, but I haven't tried that yet. I've found their thinner also works really well with Vallejo and Life Color paints and really improves how they spray too. Basically if you can mix a brand of paint with Vallejo thinner, you can use Mission Models thinner and poly with it. Overall the poly additive has been a mixed bag for me. While it works great, I've had it start to go off with two bottles I've owned, long before I had finished either. When it starts to go off, it seems ok in the bottle, but actually makes spraying the paint worse. I've ordered some more only a couple of days ago and plan on leaving this in the fridge when not in use, to see if a more consistent temperature helps with its life span. So overall my experience is its not a perfect product, but when you learn some of its quirks, you can get a great result from it. Dan

      Thanks Dan, I think like with most products there are always things to learn and every paint has its downside, like vallejo and its tendency to clog, tamiya ( I always get surface texture). Mig comes up with white spirit e.t.c

    gotta say, I'm interested in trying these paints out now! I'm not really a die-hard fan of any particular brand and i use all sorts of stuff, but mostly vallejo and life colour, but i will sometimes use hataka red line acrylics and humbrol enamels. Compared to the above, these mission models paints seem a little more resilient than the vallejo or hataka, and life colour seem to be pretty bullet proof until enamel thinner is brought into the equation, but they are temperamental to spray sometimes, and the humbrol enamels honestly spray quite nicely and leave a very smooth, super flat finish (unless its a gloss colour) but without a booth, them smell is........I would say 'bad' but honestly, without a booth or mask, i think 'deadly' is probably closer to the mark, but then lacquers are not far different in that regard!

      also I'm not very good at public speaking, I try very hard to make my wording crisp and coherent maybe it will get more confident with time !
      Thanks for the feedback on the review, when asked to do the review I wanted to show thing that I would want to know about the paint. Whilst I like subtle shading fx it would be good to know if you could cover a model to a solid colour with minimal passes .

    Great and thorough review, thanks very much for posting. I have been using MM paints for some time, and I agree with all your conclusions, both positive and negative. I do however feel a bit uncomfortable with the sensitivity of the paint-thinner ratio and sometimes I do not get it completely right, resulting in sputtering and sometimes clogging. I guess it's down to experience with these paints (I still need more practice), and the dire warnings of MM that we should follow their recommended ratios to the letter (which is good advice, of course). But this can make you reluctant to experiment with different ratios and that's the thing: this paint makes you worry all the time about thinning rations. But when you get it, it sprays so beautifully and a tiny quantity lasts for so long, that you forgive all the intricacies of getting it right :-)
    One more thing, a small detail, but so important: MM Paints not only last for very long time due to their heavy pigmentation and low recommended thinning for spraying, but MM designed their bottles' labels leaving a small vertical gap - so the label does not cover the whole bottle, 360 deg, but leaves a small "window", through which you can actually see how much paint remains. Most people may find this insignificant, but I find it ingenious, as an extremely useful, practical and easy to implement design choice. I don't think any other brand of any modeling product does this (perhaps with the exception of the Alclad Metallics, although there the gap is extremely narrow). It's actually much easier for a manufacturer to have the label wrap around completely and stick to itself, than design it with a small gap on purpose.
    I have one question though: what do you do with any remaining paint after you are done airbrushing? I do not dare to put it back in the original bottle, since I worry about the effect that the thinner (and the poly when I use it) will have on the rest of the paint. So I developed the habit of considering it "activated" and using a new, empty plastic bottle to store it from the airbrush. This led me to actually using that second bottle of "Activated" paint, to add new paint and new thinner (and poly) for all subsequent uses of that paint. But the whole process is obviously too laborious, and you need lots of empty paint bottles... Does this make sense? I have not asked the manufacturer about that yet, but I wonder if others have the same concern.
    This was never an issue with any of the other brands of paint (acrylics or lacquers) since adding any remaining paint with extra thinner into the original bottle is not a problem, and none of the other paints are so sensitive to the thinning rations anyway. Any thoughts?

      Hi Manos, I think some wastage is the down side of having the paint and activator as separate products. Since I mix all my paints in disposable medicine cups anyway, it hasn't bothered me. If I'm not sure how much I need, I go for less then I think I will need and mix up a new smaller batch later if I need it, when I can more accurately estimate what I need. Since the paint ratios are so easy to understand, it doesn't take long to mix up more paint if required. Dan

    My 2nd favourite paints after AK Real Colours. AK Real Colours is much easier to use, more durable and has a wider range but being lacquers they are much harder to clean and are pretty smelly.
    Mission Models is probably my favourite Acrylic, I've been impressed with the finish and the range is pretty good, but are a real faff to get right but once you get used to it they are brilliant

    First of all I want to say thank you for this exceptional good review. I use myself Mission Colors and never tried other brands. I'm almost novice with airspraying and I must say they are easy to use. The consistency of the paint however is quite different from a bottle to another and I had to learn on how thin them correctly. One thing I learnd is that it is easier for me to add a little too much thinner and turn down the spray pressure. I just need to build up the painting in several layers until coverage and opacity looks great to me.
    The only issues I have is with the clear coats. I have already ruined a model because I ended up with a «frosty» finish, and it was not smooth at all (it was rough when touching it). Of course I assume I was responsable and not the product itself. Could you please give me some advices to help me use these clear coats correctly. Or maybe a little tutorial on your TH-cam on this subject would be great 😁😁.
    Also I found this video released by MMP : th-cam.com/video/bOGST-eRRws/w-d-xo.html
    Again thank you for sharing your experience.
    Alain.

      @lpjmodels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alain hi ! Pigments all vary in size and this will contribute to the different viscosity of paint. Colour like white and some earth colours using tradtional oil paint for example are more bodied, whilst pigments like prussian blue and sap green are a lot fine in pigment size, this carries over to most hobby paints as well, if you mill certain pigments too fine they just become ultra transparent.
      The clear coats seem to be tricky to get to grips with, the gloss needs to go on wet and maybe with a little poly to help self level a bit better.
      The matt needs really dusty light coats, almost as if you're not putting paint on. Matt can go frosty with most brands of varnish if applied too heavily.
      So really keep a low pressure and a bit more of a distance perhaps for the matt.
      I would stay at about 17-20 psi for the gloss coats.

    Hi James a couple of years ago I did a review of Mission Models Paint for Military Modelling Magazine I must say your review here backs up everything I found and further. One problem I did encounter was with the Poly additive, after about 3 months it had set solid in the bottle. I was wondering if you had any such issues at all. Excellent review and well demonstrated.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gaz, the poly additive seems to be a bit of a mystery.
      I have 2 bottles, Both a year old and both purchased within a few months of each other.
      One is "turning" the other is fine.
      One thing I do find is with some pigments it is trickier to get a complete mix. Sometimes you'll see little microbeads of poly in the paint. And this can lead to a spluttery mess. ( this is on the bottle that is on the way out)
      I havent kept them in the fridge and my workroom gets very warm with our English summers.
      Perhaps the issue surfaces quicker when the poly encounters extreme cold during transit?
      I appreciate the kind words as well as you reaching out .
      Many thanks mate
      James

    One problem I’m having with my MMP paint is find it very easily reactivated and completely dissolved with water. I have run into this problem while using Ak pencils or using hairspray chipping. I contacted MMP they advised I’m doing something to loose adhesion like spraying to far away or at too low of pressure. I don’t believe this is the case as I went with MMP paint because I couldn’t achieve those things with other paints with out spiderwebbing it all over the model. Curious if you have any thoughts or similar experience.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Casey ! Are you sealing them ? They can be agitated with water unless you use a higher ratio of poly in the mix, if you don't use poly I would clear coat the previous layers.

    • @caseygray7046
      @caseygray7046 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LPJ Models thanks for the help! I had not been sealing them and not using a high rate of poly. I guess I incorrectly assumed since they were so durable against everything else what shouldn’t hurt them. I ordered some the W&N matte varnish I see so many people using so I hope that’s helps.

      @@inmybox2023 hi Rob, the tamiya acrylics are an Alcohol based acrylic laquer, that's why they don't layer very well when brush painting. Its exactly like the cola conundrum, same with oils and enamels. The pigments are both suspended in an oil, but ones an alkyd based drying oil ( enamel ) and the other is linseed or sunflower vegetable oil. Those however have a bit more thinner compatibility.

    Hi James, good review. Found this interesting and have been considering Mission Models paints for a while now as I have only ever used Tamiya. I do like the Tamiya paints and yes need thining before air brushing but a fresh bottle mixed straight away has a shelf life of, well, forever almost. One reason for Tamiya is that it's readily available locally but will check out M M paints online. Tamiya can be susceptible to knocks, scuffs and scratches if you're not careful before you get a good couple of clear coats on.
    As for clear coats, I use off the shelf matt, satin and gloss from DIY stores as I haven't have much success with Tamiya or any other protective coat in the model paint range.
    After watching your recent Takom 1/16 Panzer 1 build I have subed to your channel and MM paints may be a contender for the 1/16 Tiger (still waiting for it to arrive). I have a couple of kits to do before so will get a bottle or two and have a go and a practice and will let you know. All in all, looks good. 👍🏻

      Thanks Rob ! Tamiya paints were my go to in the past but I kept getting texture which was a pain.
      I think most paints, even the airbrush ready ones need some tweaking as not every set up is the same. I found myself needing to thin model air and ammo before and they are "airbrush ready".
      It's all part of the process, it would be worth trying MM out, when applied correctly they are very tough! Thanks for the comment !
