YES, you CAN control the drone with only the beacon.. I've done it. The small "joysticks" on the beacon act as a normal Mode 2 joystick configuration. It's a bit slow to respond., however and is not the best way to control the drone, but it CAN be done.
I am from Zero Zero Technology. Your review is very good. Thank you. The best form of Beacon is to match it with JoyStick. People can control it with one hand or two hands, which adds a lot of fun.
The video is impressive and provides valuable insights. Well done 👏🏾. I have shared it with the Hoverair group chat in the hope that it will inspire them to make positive changes. It is important to note that the product is still in its early stages of development and may undergo further improvements.
Yes! I’ve had a recent firmware update that seems to have finally given me access to manual control from the Beacon - it’s still far more preferable using the app itself in terms of screen size, things you can change, and general control over the flight and recording - but it’s nice to finally feel like I have the option!
Thanks Cai. It’s interesting that you couldn’t use the little D pad on the Beacon to manually control the X1 Pro because the only time I tried it myself I could manually direct the drone! But I haven’t been able to use the Beacon microphone to record audio (the option in Beacon settings is greyed out). I can use the phone to record audio just like when I was flying my original X1 over the last 12 months. The Beacon needs a firmware update to both correct and expand some of the functionality IMO. I agree that currently the only practical use of the Beacon (without joysticks) for me as a cyclist, is to be able to look down to the screen and know it is following and on the odd occasion when you may need to use the return to home button because it’s gone wayward. I am a first a road cyclist and secondly a gravel cyclist and it’s on the country back roads, paths and gravel trails that I was using the original X1. It was just too slow when you’re doing 30++kph a lot of the time. During the week I’ve done a few local rides on paths and I can see how must faster the X1 Pro is - it can keep up easily and handle winds better. I’ll get out this weekend on some trails and give it more of a workout. vimeo.com/1018858431
Thanks for dropping by again, my friend. You and I have similar use cases, and we’re definitely agreed that the big hope here is increased functionality by way of firmware updates. Right now, it feels like we need some of the functions of the app to come across to the Beacon WITHOUT the joystick peripherals. I’m not sure I like the fact that the app feels like a more complete bit of software than what the beacon is running.
Thanks for your comment! Absolutely, I think this is the best combo to cover ALL bases. You get the power case, you get the joystick, and with the Beacon’s current firmware / capabilities, it’s hard to recommend it without the joystick.
originally I wanted to buy just cycling combo as I am not skiing (tried it only once or twice in my life with mixed results) and I also wanted joystick so I had changed my mind and ordered Skiing combo with extra handlebar mount as it was only 50dollars more expensive comparing to cycling combo with joystick (plus I got power case and 2 thermo batteries too). Best combo in my opinion (and it the same for both Pro and ProMax versions)

The one thing that did impress me was the actual tracking straight out of the box with no beacon etc it worked very well but all the issues have put a massive downer on the whole experience! I have emailed hover air with a video of the joysticks not working, waiting to hear back!
Hey Rob - I hear you, brother. For those that have experienced issues (I’m one of those) it’s certainly at best a frustration and at worst can dent confidence in using what to many feels like a beta product. I’ve seen people say they’ve like beta testers for a pricey product, and I know there’ve been people that have struggled with customer service and resolution. As ever, I assume there are ALSO tons of customers who are happy and confident using their product but it seems that people are having different experiences with the same product, and that won’t help to instil confidence for this generation of drones or the next.
So i am using the follow me mode and ive seen that it tracks me well with it. When using the beacon I can use the follow me mode the same.....How do I know if its following the beacon and not just the standard follow me mode?
This is a really good question - I’m not sure I know the answer to this. Officially, the beacon uses their in-house-named ‘HoverLink’ tech to reinforce the tracking provided by the camera, that’s for sure.
Still did not receive my X1 ProMax Skiing Bundle with Beacon, but coming from Skydio 2+ maybe connecting beacon could work as follows: connect beacon to phone and then to X1 Pro. With my Skydio 2+ I have to fire up: first beacon, then phone, then drone. With Skydio 2+ the beacon works as “amplifier” for stronger ´"bondage" between phone and Skydio drone. Give it a try and search if beacon can be connected to the phone .................. or beacon needs to be connected to at least ONE RC-handle .................
Does it also come in pink? So what exactly does the beacon do? It has GPS right? Which means the HoverAir X1 Pro uses both optical tracking and follow-me at the same time. But then why not use the phone I wonder? The cheapest drones can have a perfect follow-me if programmed correctly. It's only a couple lines code. Unfortunately most drones do it wrong. That makes people believe GPS follow-me is inferior to optical tracking. It's not. It is different and it works completely different. Optical tracking, although a great feature, is not a replacement for follow-me. But perhaps a combination of optical and GPS follow-me simultaneously is not possible with an app and phone? Maybe you need a beacon? How does it work on the Skydio? Will it follow the phone? As long drone reviewers don't understand the difference between optical tracking and follow-me, it is hard to explain how exactly things combine. And why for example the phone can't be used as a beacon. Also there are different types of GPS follow-me; string, and compass. Basically string only follows from behind, while with compass type you can put the drone anywhere you want and it will stay north south east west relative to you. Very important is you can still use the sticks in tracking mode. And what you don't want is it flying back to where it took off as you are no longer there. Unless you can set it as an option. Anyway, thanks for the video. I'm not going to buy it. Maybe the Neo? But it gives me something to think about. Drone manufacturers can get it wrong. I mean they make a product and it all looks impressive. But often they themselves fail to understand how their product is used in real life. It's all about practicality. To prove my point, not a single person cycling around the world uses DJI's active-track. Ask them. They all fly their drone manually with the sticks. It quicker, simpler, more reliable, safer, and you get better shots. Maybe with the HoverAir X1 and Neo things will change?
