This is a very good piece of help. I thought my ear was ok, and that I would find this topic easy. It just shows how wrong you can be and how rusty you can get. Thanks for this Gareth, I think I shall now watch it again. I have started to work on my grade 6 theory by the way and hope to back to you in due course. Thanks for this video which was very much appreciated..
Hi Tony. I'm glad it's helpful and it's good to hear from you again. Good luck with the ongoing studies and if there's anything I can help with just shout. All the best.
Perseverence pays off. Merci for this. I think the key to my musical progress was learning the Rule of the Octave, and then instead of practicing chord inversions (which I'd been doing mindlessly for months) to practice cadences from a thoroughbass level. It really is helping to train my fingers, and slowly my ear.
The way I was taught, V-I chords are called "authentic" and can either be perfect authentic, in which soprano resolves to tonic, or imperfect authentic, in which soprano lands on a note other than tonic, and cadences that end in the V are called half cadences... Is this just an American thing, or-?
It’s essentially a US/ British tradition issue but you’re right to raise the fact that cadences are labelled differently according to one’s particular musical upbringing. Your comment encourages me to make a video on the fuller terminology surrounding all the cadences. Thank you. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk

Surely this is easier in Minor keys. Major I can understand why people may not get it both major chords in a major keys are V and I. But in a minor key chord I is minor but chord V is major so that would be making things easier.
Oh yeah , thanks a lot ❤ Tomorrow i am going to have the G6 exam, really really thank you, really helpful, thank you, i always find the video which and help my arual.... and now ! I have found ! Thanks !
Hi. Thanks for your comment and I hope the exam goes really well. Where are you taking it? There are plenty more films at www.mmcourses.co.uk Let me know how the exam goes. Good luck!
My conscious brain is always trying to "figure this out" while my unconscious brain (intuition) always recognizes "home" or not. Playing versions of the home chord really threw my conscious brain as they are recognized as different while my intuition was saying they feel the same. I'm enjoying the "this is different" yet "this is home" dissonance you've triggered! : ) [SUBSCRIBED]
I learn a lot from your lessons, Sir and thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Could you please direct me to the link where you have taught how to identify Plagal and Interrupted cadences as well. Thank you once again.
Interesting... in the United States we call your "perfect" cadence an "authentic" cadence, and your "imperfect" cadence a "half" cadence. The words "perfect" and "imperfect" in the United States have to do with melody within an authentic cadence (V to I in root position): going V to I and ending the melody on scale degree 1 (in root position) is our US "perfect authentic cadence". Going V to I and ending the melody on scale degree 3 or 5 (in root position) is our US "imperfect authentic cadence". Fascinating difference in terminology!
tbh I think i needed to learn more theory before doing grade 6 aural. maybe from grade 3 which i attempted in yr 5 if i recall correctly. i've had at least 3 yrs cmon me. thanks for the video though. maybe with some more research i can get the hang of all this.
Watching this video, a thought occurred to me: if the tonic is in a MINOR key then the dominant will be a MAJOR chord. So listen to the tonality of the final chord - if it's minor it must be perfect, if major it must be imperfect (of the two choices we're given). An extra clue for nothing :)
+Sohum Datta Productionst SDP Hi. Have a look at our "Quick tips" films on TH-cam. The Perfect Cadence is explained and the other cadences will be appearing across the next few Thursdays. The written side is also covered in our grade 5 theory course and Advanced theory course at www.mmcourses.co.uk

Just a quick question, if the piece I'm playing is on four pages...am I allowed to photocopy the first two pages to stick next to the last two pages so that I won't need to flip through the book? I know there's the no illegal photocopies rule...but so far my piano teacher says that it's okay but I am a bit worried....
