I'd never thought about it, but once you started the single color row, I instantly realized what you were going to do! It's how you use multiple colors in mosaic knitting. So I'm guessing this is technically a combination of Fair Isle and Mosaic knitting. Very cool, I will definitely try more Fair Isle patterns this way!

That is mosaic knitting. A colorwork that allows one to use one color at a time. Nice pattern!

I have always gotten the yarn monster that tangles my yarn when trying color work when I'm not looking . But Chandi has slayed the dreaded yarn monster! Hooray!! Another score for Expression Fiber Arts!!👍👍😎😎🥰🤦♀️
This helped me untangle my mess of yarn while knitting a two color pattern on a mitten. For some reason the instructions stated to carry each strand UNDER the previous color and that made the yarn twist terribly. I was worried it wouldn't look good on the back, but it looks the SAME. (which is nice and neat) Thank you!!!!!

I like the second option better 😉 knitting with one strand at a time is much easier for me. I just got comfortable with knitting period & I'm a "thrower", so holding yarn in each hand is a little intimidating for me 😨 & will take a lot of practice. There's going to be a lot of swatching going on in my bedroom. Lol😅. Thanks for sharing Chandi. You are a great teacher! I've learned so much from you💜

I’m ok with using two yarns per row, and although an “English style” knitter, whenever I done Fair Isle sweaters (only 3 ever lol) I carried one colour in right hand to “throw” as usual, and the second colour was held in left hand and worked “Continental” style. I reckon this slip stitch method would muck up the tension vertically and you’d lose the visual effect of true Fair Isle as the colours are generally supposed to change every two rows. By Slipping one row”s colours you’d end up with only one row of that particular colour. But I can see this technique working out for many other colourwork projects so well done, nice shortcut.

I have been so frustrated with fairisle knitting because my floats get too tight!! Ugh 😩 ! So I still have some unfinished projects (I wouldn’t call them WIPS because I haven’t worked on them for years!!) sitting in their bags in the back of my closet! I am going to try this to see if it will work on one of the projects I would LOVE to finish - a herringbone pattern in the round..Aqua blue and a sand tan color change!

Did you convert fair isle into mosaic knitting? I've done both and that reminds me of the mosaic knitting technique vs stranded/fair isle.

I have yet to knit a fair isle pattern where I need to “catch” floats. That is what intimidates me about a lot of patterns. I wonder if this technique would work for those patterns? Or would the floats just be too long? Lovely video as always Chandi!!!!

Can you use this technique if you have to carry a color over a long stretch? Like if your pattern calls for 6 or 7 pink stitches in a row and then 2 blue?
It works for any fairisle design. It produces the same length of floats as you would get working the traditional fairisle method. :)
Wow! But, I'm guessing you must knit the base row of pink & blue to be able to slip the next rows? Also, if you're doing a non-geometric or non-matching pattern (eg. radishes with leaves) this wouldn't particularly work? Will try this!

How is this different from mosiac knitting? And what do you on the next row when you have to switch the pattern...blue over pink and pink over blue?
The difference between this and mosaic knitting is that you actually work the same row here twice, once in each color, separately, as opposed to mosaic knitting which has you work 2 rows of each color before moving on and working 2 rows of the next color. On the next row you just continue to follow the pattern like you would if knitting normal fairisle. Work the blues where they should be, etc. Then go back and work the pink where it should be on that same row. I hope that helps!

Would this only work for patterns where you don't need floats in the back? What happens when you have a gap of 5+ stitches and you're slipping all this stitches where you'd normally carry the float? You just have really long floats?

So question….when you slip the stitches like that, are you calling that two rows done in the pattern or only one row but knit it twice? Know what I mean?
This is my question, also. If you are passing through each row twice in order to get all the stitches processed, but count each pass as one row, doesn't that mess with the row count?
Great question. You are working each row twice. So it takes longer than the traditional method. Try both and see which you prefer!

I like this technique but only if the spaces between colors are no more than 4 stitches, there’s nothing more I hate than long floats and with this, you’d have to figure out how to grab longer floats.
When you wear clothes you don't make, would you mind terribly posting where they came from? Your clothes are very nicely fitted and you have a number of linen dresses that are BEAUTIFUL, I'd love to know where to find things like this. Thanks!
