Inside the hog trial cabin - unseen relics- Hatfield McCoy feud-

  • The Hatfield-McCoy Feud involved two American families of the West Virginia-Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River from 1863 to 1891. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy. Those involved in the feud were descended from Joseph Hatfield and William McCoy (born c. 1750). The feud has entered the American folklore lexicon as a metonym for any bitterly feuding rival parties.
    Hog trial
In the fall of 1878, William “Devil Anse” Hatfield’s cousin, Floyd Hatfield drove his hogs into pens for fattening on the Kentucky side of the Tug Fork River. The hogs had roamed the hills around the Tug and Blackberry Forks throughout the spring and summer, though each hog bore its owner’s marking because of the animal’s value as a commodity and food source. Soon after Floyd Hatfield had rounded up his hogs, Randolph “Old Ranel” McCoy was near Hatfield’s pigpen and claimed one of the hogs bore his mark. Wasting no time to hear an explanation, McCoy accused Hatfield of theft and brought suit against Floyd Hatfield. Reverend Anderson Hatfield, a local Justice of the Peace, convened a jury of six Hatfields and six McCoys to adjudicate the situation. Many witnesses were called, but the key testimony came from William Stanton, a McCoy relative with two Hatfields as brothers-in-law. Stanton claimed he saw Hatfield’s mark on the hog. Stanton’s testimony was enough to persuade Selkirk McCoy, who voted to acquit Floyd Hatfield.
    Election day murder
The feud continued in 1882 when Ellison Hatfield, brother of Anse, was killed by three of Roseanna's younger brothers: Tolbert, Phamer (Pharmer), and Bud. On an election day in Kentucky, the three McCoy brothers fought a drunken Ellison and another Hatfield brother; Ellison was stabbed 26 times and finished off with a gunshot. The McCoy brothers were initially arrested by Hatfield constables and were taken to Pikeville for trial. Secretly, Anse organized a large group of vigilantes and intercepted the constables and their McCoy prisoners before they reached Pikeville. The brothers were taken by force to West Virginia. When Ellison died from his injuries, all three McCoy brothers were killed by the Hatfield's in turn: they were tied to pawpaw bushes and each was shot numerous times, with a total of fifty shots fired. Their bodies were described as "bullet-riddled".
    *McCoy cabin attack"
The feud reached its peak during the 1888 New Year's Night Massacre. Cap and Vance led several members of the Hatfield clan to surround the McCoy cabin and opened fire on the sleeping family.[14] Awakened by the shooting, the McCoys managed to grab their weapons and fired back.[19] The cabin was then set on fire in an effort to drive the McCoys into the open.
Panicking, the McCoys rushed to every exit they could find. Randolph managed to escape and hide inside the pig pen. Most of his children managed to escape into the woods. Two of Randolph's children, Calvin and Alifair, were shot and killed near the family well as they exited their home.[1 Randolph's wife, Sarah, was caught, beaten, and almost killed by Vance and Johnse. With his house burning, Randolph and his remaining family members were able to escape farther into the wilderness; his children, unprepared for the elements, suffered frostbite. The remaining McCoys moved to Pikeville to escape the West Virginia raiding parties.

My dad was born in a log cabin with a loft in Martin County, KY, probably similar to this one. He said he would wake up on winter mornings with a smattering of snow over his blankets that came through the gaps in the roof and walls. The cabin was probably smaller than this one. His parents slept downstairs and the kids slept in the loft. They only had a ladder to the loft.

My son has one of those wooden mallets I bought at a flea market in Bargersville, IN. We never knew what it was, We always called it the Attitude Adjuster. We figured it was some kind of a log splitter. Come to find out it's a gavel in certain parts 😁

I was also thinking the gaps would be so when you’re sweeping, the dirt could just fall through. Ya know the “potty chair idea had to come from somewhere” 😂 I’ve never heard about burning your house for nails, wow!

That's really cool to see all those places and artifacts. I have an old book about the Hatfield and McCoy Feud, just a little thin paper back, that a lady who lived up the road from me gave to me. I read it numerous times when I was a kid, as did all my friends. She said she attended Devil Anse Hatfield"s funeral when she was a young girl. That always amazed me. Great video! Thanks Leo and Heather!

I'm from the original line of McCoy's, I would love a list of places to visit so I can plan a trip! I'm just now learning about my lineage. I knew the truth about how the fued started but I don't know much more than that. Thank you for sharing this and your other videos so I can learn more. My grandfather passed before he got the chance to tell me much about the family. My great-great-grandfather was William Riley McCoy. I'd love to go further up the tree to learn more and see how far I can go! ❤❤❤

When we would go visit my grandparents in Pikeville, KY, there was cracks in the roof in the upstairs bedroom/attic and you could see outside 😮, us kids had to stay in that room. It was scary! I was happy when my uncle bought them a new house on Turkey Pen, because there was no attic and no cracks, plus they had indoor plumbing which they did not have before lol

On Preacher Anse's findagrave, there are photos and one of them was a clipping of the loss of the original cabin.
I've wondered the same thing about how they were able to procreate all those children within earshot of the entire house. How'd you like to grow up hearing that all the time, unless they knew how to keep quiet somehow, maybe those ropes weren't as loud as springs?
My brother was very good friends through his life with two Hatfield boys descendants in Ohio. A long time ago he told me their family was a part of the Hatfield clan and that it started over a pig. I just recently traced the boys' father on findagrave directly back to Preacher Anse. I seem to have a vague memory of my brother telling me that the local Hatfields' ancestor was the judge on the pig ownership. My brother is gone now but if I ever see his friends around when I'm in my hometown again, I will ask what they know about it. I' m sure they've been back a few times as I saw their grandfather is buried in the Anderson Hatfield cemetery. I'm also going to ask them what made their dad leave the area as he was the first one of their line to leave.

Callaway Co. MO, in early 80's we had an over eighty-year-old neighbor build a cabin using hand tools. The door latch was fascinating. He used wood pins only. Yucky gossip or fun gossip depending on who's listening, but he would live in Mexico for the winter *supposedly he liked the younger women" to keep him warm.

Leo excellent video. Very interesting. Who actually owns the cabin now You & my Dad must have been cut from the same cloth. I was one of 5 children & from the time we were infants we went to church with my parents. My father insisted that we be a half an hour early before Mass started. I think it made my mother crazy. I still am never late for Mass but I sure am not 30 minutes early.

I've always been fascinated with history but the Hatfield and McCoy feud just has me stuck. I've even thought about moving up there.
