My greatest problem in DM is the fact the story resets its setting thrice - the first one is the post-apocalypse run by Batmen, the second the McGuffin chase of the previous Crises, and the third being a big wasteland for all the heroes to fight on. This is also the story's greatest wasted potential - if it was set in the Batworld with Perpetua closing in and BWL being her emissary on Earth the story would have worked well. The other major problem I have with DM is how unfocused it is, especially compared to Metal. In regular Metal we have the main series, a series of origins for the Knights, a series of Knights fighting their counterparts and a series of the Knights invading Earth. It's simple, clear and easy to understand. Then we go to DM, where we have origin stories and tie-in battles for every one of the three reboots I mentioned earlier, however none of it is paid off meaningfully as the story reboots so much. And as for the Batmanhattan and other Knights in the story, well they break the Dark Multiverse completely. The worlds in the Dark Multiverse are created by someone's fears, for example Batman's fear of being infected with the Joker toxin creates BWL. What DM tells us is that Bruce had a fear of himself becoming Dr Manhattan, himself becoming a car, a city, a T-rex and whatever else. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Death metal is what happens when you put references over actual story telling. Same issue as covergence where retro characters are brought back with no care or taste. "LOOK ITS BAT BABY AND THE RAINBOW BATMAN" but why? Best aspect was owlman imo
Yeah, even I'll admit the Bat Baby was incredibly dumb. It didn't help that Garth Ennis created him to take the piss of Death Metal given his hatred of superheroes. I'll give James Tynion IV credit for trying to salvage the Bat Baby by making him a legitimate threat, but it didn't change how stupid of an idea it was.
@shut up At least B-Rex and Batmobeast were entertaining despite their limited screen-time. Bat-Baby was just dumb, even by the standards of Dark Multiverse Batmen.
What the hell was up with that Penguin tie-in? It was so strange and out of nowhere that i legitimately think about that one story more than the actual event
I really liked dark nights metal but I felt death metal just got too insane for it’s own good. Plot threads started to make less sense, characters either acting out of character or not even having a character (characters like hawk girl and Martian man hunter for example come to mind). I will forever be upset that the powerhouse that is superboy prime (my favorite DC villain) was barely used and when he was, it wasn’t that clear what ended up happening after secret origin. Also in terms of nicknames, when secret origin was announced, I will always laugh at this comment I saw calling it, “the virgin who laughs vs. Chad Superboy-Prime” lol. There’s a whole lot more and I still liked the book, but it was a step down from OG dark nights metal.
This is the comic run that started a Toy line (McFarland Batman Toys). Instead of a toy line (GI JOE) starting a comic run! DC once again playing catch up and doing things in reverse. I also agree on non readable font
Considering the state DC Comics is in, I think this series, the first, is the most accurate, most consistent comic out of all the modern ones. It's balls the walls action and surprises left and right and doesn't lose focus on anything except story, which it quickly bounces back to each time something shocking happens. This is awesome. But the Himalaya was pain. The Dark Knights Death Metal was like that. I don't even have a problem with them going all out insane and cartoony. I'm just upset and the pacing and the story structure. It feels oddly inconsistent compared to the last. It's story beats, the important stuff, is random and shouldn't even be happening
what are your thoughts on Peter Tomasi's detective comics run? considering how much i usually love Tomasi's work, i didn't expect to hate this as much as i did. Love your channel by the way.
Here are a few ideas for stupid Bat-Men. Bat-Bat. Batman but he is literally a bat that bites criminals at night (do not be confused with Man-Bat). Man-Man - Bruce Wayne but without the bat theme. Bat-computer. Yep, just a computer with Bruce's Wayne mind. Bat - internet router. Bat-planet. Bat-couch. Bat - table. Bat - trash can. Bat - comic. Bat - alien. Bat - grass. Bat - dirt. Bat - water. Bat-universe. "The Dark Night" - Batman but he is a night. Bat-cape / "The Caped Crusader". Bat-Penguin (I am not talking about the villain, I am talking about the animal).
I feel like a lot of your criticism is just “this is stupid and I don’t like it”, which is totally fine if you don’t like it, but I feel like Snyder was trying to just create a dumb fun event, I definitely agree that there are structure issues and problems with its connections to Justice League, but again, it’s just dumb fun.
Yeah the dumb huge shit is why I read these crossover events to begin with. And this shit delivered that more than anything ever. I live for those moments like “LOL HES JUST THROWING FUCKIN PLANETS AT PERPETUAS HEAD!!”
@@Yoshimitsu4prez depends if its well executed, but i think this event wasnt really well done, at some points i even got bored, despite the fact that it should be fun as heck, too many exposition dialogue, fights without weight, and a bunch of dumb batmen, like that bat wizard, and that batbatmobile.
You're trying to apply a 3 act storytelling structure to a single issue when you should use it for the series as whole.. Which would be Metal being the start, Justicle League being the middle and Death Metal being the end.. The main villain is Giggly bats throughout the story.. And the plots they didn't explain in the main story are explained pretty well in the 10 or so tie ins released with it.. That is the main issue tho, instead of tie ins, they could have just made the series as 12 issues long, trim the fat and make it easier to follow along with it.. Alfred was revived by the Black lantern ring and BWL was revived cause technically he is the second best combatant to have around next to batman, and way better fighter to have on your side compared to someone like penguin..
This event commits the worst sin of an event comic. It cannot stand on its own without its dozen tie in issues. That said, this event, tie ins and all, was batshit insane and i enjoyed the chaos. I wont fault people who dislike it, but i had a blast and rereading it a few years later was still a lot of fun IMO.
So, I know the idea is not to actually make a batman out of a candle, but that is doable... A candle that can outargue anyone, making it the best commander, planner, etc... It'd be a wonderful item for an rpg campaign and all... The problem here seems to be that Snyder ends up creating that Ratman from Justice Friends, who has technical skill, i.e can kick ass/be the night, but might actually want to become the night, and think lock-up from btas makes sense... "YES, NOW I CAN SEE ALL THE CRIMES!!! ...I can't do anything about them... But it's a step on the right direction... I guess, I'll count how many stars I have...
#Releasethebatmug #Releasethebatpencil Also The Last Stories is also the only one that got my interest honestly, The Last Stories Of The DC Universe deserves its own event, deserves better than Death Metal

Something that's important to remember about Death Metal is that the event by all appearances was HEAVILY rewritten after Didio's firing and the nixing of 5G. That likely accounts for a lot of the bizarre storytelling decisions, because Snyder's JL saga was supposed to have ended in a very different way originally.
DC Death Metal is AMAZING. But there are some Things That aren't really Explained, but I think there are some Versions of Bat-Man That Scott Snyder Didn't really need to add them. Baton, Bat-Man Solomon Grundy Hybrid, Dinosaur Bat-Man, Bat-Man Talking Mobile.

I just finished reading Dark Nights Metal and I have no idea how the Batman Who Laughs became a popular character with those AWFUL word balloons and lettering. I got a migraine reading his dialogue. I am not reading any crossover he's in for fear of an aneurysm.
Your main complaints also seem to really stem from trying to analyze the core 7 issues on it’s own. Imo you gotta include all the tie-ins as one long story. Hell when you buy them digitally, most of the time-ins are sold as part of the main series. The one-shots/tie-ins list is only 4 or 5 issues or something.
This is a perfect example of DC milking the bloody bat-cow, even more than usual. At this point I am surprised they have not killed off every non bat related character in the bloody DCU! It is not like they care about anything other than damn Batman. Now if people like this story that is cool, but I have since grown tired of the overexposure of the flying rodent.
I think everyone has grown tired of the flying rodent's overexposure. Not that I can blame DC, since Batman comics are usually well-written and accessible, meaning that he's very profitable.
@@smashmaster521 Until Bendis came along Superman comics were well written. In fact t there are several DC comics are well written and arguably better than half the bat books
@@smashmaster521 Clark's insane father took Jon away to the future (something which Lois his MOTHER was ok with), and sent him back when he became a teenager. He grew up without his father and Kent was denied the chance to watch his child grow up in front of him. How is that not bad?!
Yeah, I really can't bring myself to hate Death Metal. Don't get me wrong, it's an absolute mess of a story structurally, but it's also the story that gave Owlman his single most badass moment, restored Wally to being the primary Flash, had Wonder Woman beat the Batman Who Laughs (the embodiment of everything wrong with the New 52 and Rebirth eras) to the point that he literally begs for his life, and all while everyone looks like they walked of a Death Metal album cover. This comes with the caveat that most of the best stuff tends to happen in the tie-ins, though. The main story actually has the problem that until the climax, it doesn't really get to indulge in the central premise of the event the way the tie-ins can because it needs to do a lot of grunt work to tie a nice bow on both Dark Nights Metal AND the Crisis Trilogy. Thus the main story often reads like a bunch of Metalhead comic nerds who just left a Death Metal concert info-dumping all this arcane DC lore on some poor normie Metalhead. Because the tie-ins don't have to worry about that as much, they can actually indulge in the Metal Rock Opera absurdity of it all.
Yes, you should. I do suggest reading Jonathan Hickman's run on Avengers and New Avengers beforehand, both because they lead into Secret Wars and because they're genuinely excellent comics in their own right.
It was an insane roller coaster for a while but the part when the Batman who laughs became a god was the worst part of the series, i mean the first metal was about an invasion by barbatos who brings the whole dark multiverse with him with twisted versions of Batman and that includes the Batman who laughs, but the moment when a single character become more relevant than the main villain everything screwed up, death metal was a mess of nonsense, it was awful create a batman version of doctor manhattan, and then they made him a god who’s capable to face the goddess of the multiverse, well at least was a funny event overall.

Hope you’re doing good and still planning on releasing that Bendis review man. This is definitely the best comic channel btw
What the hell was up with that Penguin tie-in? It was so strange and out of nowhere that i legitimately think about that one story more than the actual event
@comicpop I think you should watch this really good break down of the comic Dark Knights Death Metal
It's really disappointing it suffered from this type of thinking:
"Wouldn't it be cool if we did this?"
"Ok, how do we do it?"
*"I DONT KNOW"*
This is the comic run that started a Toy line (McFarland Batman Toys). Instead of a toy line (GI JOE) starting a comic run! DC once again playing catch up and doing things in reverse. I also agree on non readable font
Really? I had no problem reading The Batman Who Laughs' dialogue. Do I live in an alternate reality or something?
I like your analogies
what are your thoughts on Peter Tomasi's detective comics run? considering how much i usually love Tomasi's work, i didn't expect to hate this as much as i did. Love your channel by the way.
You deserve so much more views.
This is such a Great Story.
I really don't see how you wouldn't Love The Story.🤘🏻🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻🦇🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😈😈😈😈😈😈
I also think the story is great, but it ok for people to think otherwise
Can you please talk about how Batman vs Robin fucked up the Court of Owls book.
Are you going to upload again you were my favorite comic youtuber
I’m your 6 thousand subscriber 😎
Have you discussed your thoughts on Tom King's Vision or Mister Miracle before?
Ahh the Waltzer (u.k.) the best fairground ride-scream if you want to go faster!!
You have to take it as a Futurama episode and it's glorious
I like the Himalaya but only if nobody is sitting next to me
#Releasethebatmug #Releasethebatpencil
Also The Last Stories is also the only one that got my interest honestly, The Last Stories Of The DC Universe deserves its own event, deserves better than Death Metal
Lmao! Metal and death metal reinvigorated my love for comics. U make very god points yet, I disagreed with A LOT of it. I appreciate different perspectives, and gave u your 300th like on this vid and subscribed regardless. Our different perspectives is what makes things great! Fantastic review! 👍👍
If you ever come back can you make a “how to start reading” either the teen titans or recommend more Batman stories to read?
This is why you should not try to pull off a Grant Morrison story that takes 10 years to set up, because trust me, no one's insane enough to do that.
Out of curiosity what do you guys hear when you guys read anything with Batman who laughs do you guys hear Mark Hamill or Kevin Conroy
Kevin Conroy would be such a wonderfully bizzare thing to play this joker-esque character. Mark Hammil would be too obvious
@@adamf.charles5857 Agree absolutely agree but can you also imagine some of the other Batmen or jokers actors? Batman brave and the bold, under the red hood, hell even some of the live action actors?
I hear Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy speaking at the same time in a way that makes The Batman Who Laughs sound demonic.
@@smashmaster521 Damn that sounds like a lot I can’t even begin to imagine what that would sound like
@@sammysamiam5219 It would sound like Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy speaking in unison with a demonic filter.
Today searched for comicbook videos and found yours
They’re great
Thank you for work
(But after walley killing everybody I want to buy copy of heros in crisis...)
Its not that easy to find that good videos about comicbooks
Can we talk about how TBWL could have wiped every hero when he got the powers of Dr.Batmanhattan, but somehow didnt because he was "weak" (?)
Hey. I really enjoy the content, but have you ever thought of reviewing something you really enjoyed? I would love to see some content in the future about runs you really appreciate! Anyways, keep up the good work.
Bat Tower. Batman if he literally became the Watchtower.
Wait... Dr. Bat-hattan, not Dr. Batmanhattan? They had one job...
Are you OK you haven’t uploaded in nine months
This is very, very well done
Dark Nights Metal was fun,
Death Metal was an absolute disaster.
Wait until the omnibus release! Then we talking
Bat door knob
idk i liked it tbh. I dont think it really got "too crazy" or anything because thats how it was in the first one. Sure a lot of snyders tropes are present and it pretty similar to other plotlines of his but it has probably capullos best art. the criticisms in the vid are def valid though
Can you also do Grant Morrison's Batman run, prtty pls?!
Love to know your thoughts on that.
I just finished reading Dark Nights Metal and I have no idea how the Batman Who Laughs became a popular character with those AWFUL word balloons and lettering. I got a migraine reading his dialogue. I am not reading any crossover he's in for fear of an aneurysm.
Seriously, The Batman Who Laughs' dialogue isn't hard to read at all. Why am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with Death Metal?
@@smashmaster521 I'm reading it digitally. The screen doesn't do well with the lettering.
@@yy-hj4br That may be a problem with the app, since this video had no problem rendering The Batman Who Laughs' dialogue.
Finally, somebody who hates the Batman who laughs
Death metal is fantastic really enjoyed it
Idgaf this was my favourite crossover event of all time, not even close
Your main complaints also seem to really stem from trying to analyze the core 7 issues on it’s own. Imo you gotta include all the tie-ins as one long story. Hell when you buy them digitally, most of the time-ins are sold as part of the main series. The one-shots/tie-ins list is only 4 or 5 issues or something.
Comparing it to endgame is also sooooooooo so goddamn surface level. Practically Lion King/kimba tier analysis
Sorry I’m triggered
@@Yoshimitsu4prez Do you even know what that word means?
@@zemox2534 OBJECTION: Bendis' Superman is NOT that bad. It's not without problems, but it's nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
@@smashmaster521 Clark's insane father took Jon away to the future (something which Lois his MOTHER was ok with), and sent him back when he became a teenager. He grew up without his father and Kent was denied the chance to watch his child grow up in front of him. How is that not bad?!
@@zemox2534 ...I mean, for what it's worth, the story doesn't try to paint that as a good thing. I got no explanation for Lois' lapse in judgment.
Actually Bane Broke Alfred's Back, not The Neck.
Frank Miller created TBWL it was in All Star Batman and Robin
I never want to see the batman who laughs for as long as I live
They need to stop milking Batman who laughs for every Batman story
Mm I should read secret wars
Yes, you should. I do suggest reading Jonathan Hickman's run on Avengers and New Avengers beforehand, both because they lead into Secret Wars and because they're genuinely excellent comics in their own right.
Man, this guy dies for months, and then he comes back, when you least expect it.
This was all just an excuse to draw cool edgy stuff.
LESS GOOO
You don't understand, he had prep time
Bat-ric Ric Grayson becomes Batman
You should so do a review of Snyders run
He already did one.
Soo, you're a MARVEL Fan.
Cant say i share your love for Metal lmao i tought it was the dumbest thing ever
I don't know why, but The CrossOvers of DC Death Metal is better than the Event.
(31:16-31:20) WTF 😂 Seriously?!
batman the Hedgehog
But the himalayia was the best ride
I love you
Ah yeah also I mostly read or watch batman from DC. But damn, all this bat-metal shit made me hate batman too...
Wait, so you didn’t like the story?
Scott Snyder needs an editor. There is no way he is being edited in a serious way. Especially when you read his older stuff.
