Rue is someone you think is the villain but is actually a damsel in distress.
Plus her big love confession to Mytho gives me strong “Swan Princess” vibes.

It's also worth noting that the "Black Swan" in Swan Lake is a (step)daughter / pawn of the villain who, in the major variations, wins the Prince's love (albeit by looking like the "White Swan"). In one major variation this then curses the White Swan to remain a literal swan forever.
But my memory of Princess Tutu is that it's made clear that Duck is not the protagonist in Drosselmeyer's story, she's at best a facilitator of the true love story of the Prince and Rue, doomed to return to being a duck forever when her role is finished.
So in Swan Lake, the Black Swan is the villainess; but in Princess Tutu, the White Swan is the villainess when she tries to change the story to take the Black Swan's happy ending for herself and avoid her (the White Swan's) tragic fate.

You can read Dosselmeyer as Duck's abusive stepdad as well.

i'm sorry. I strongly disagree. Duck's way more selfless and heroic than Rue. As someone who was abused in the same way Mytho was by Rue, i literally CANNOT bring myself- no matter how hard I try- to like Rue or be supportive of Mytho's choice to pick her when by all accounts he should not have. It's really hard for me to picture any scenario where Duck is the bad guy in this. No matter what the narrative states, we've been SHOWN through action that Duck loves Mytho selflessly, and Rue loves Mytho selfISHly. Her one sacrifice to try to spare him the consequences of HER actions doesn't excuse the rest of the show where she's either literally SA'ing him or trying to rob him of his agency. I don't like Rue. I never will. I've legimately tried to like her, and I just can't.

Rue and Duck have an interesting dynamic. At first ww see Duck greatly admire Rue while Rue befriends her despite heing the it girl of the school who don't needvto befriend the weird girl but they strike an unconventional friendship of sorts , their friendship only strained when they founfd out about each other secret identities

When I first saw Princess Tutu, I was totally on Ahiru's side and really wanted her to win Mytho's heart.
Then the second half started and the story gets a lot more complicated. Delicious. As you said, we learn a lot more about Rue's past, especially her times with Mytho, and little Rue is just too adorable. As I watched, the prince already has his princess, and that's Rue. The scenes as Mytho becomes more and more taken over by the Raven, Rue never leaves him. She's been dark and she comes back out on the other side. By the end, so has Mytho.
That's a place that neither Ahiru nor Tutu could ever go. She's hope. She never gives up. She could never understand how tempting it is to be the Raven, to be dark. They would never work out.
Fakir has failed. He failed in the story and he failed in trying to keep Mytho docile, heartless, and thus safe. Ahiru can understand failure. She's kind of awful at dancing at first. She stumbles. She makes mistakes, so many mistakes. But she keeps going. So does Fakir. I so very much loved them starting out as enemies and ending up - well, that's not as clear by then end but I sure ship the two of them. He just needs to write the right story to bring Ahiru back.
If I haven't made any sense, the short part is Yes. I loved Rue before your video and you do a very very good job of highlighting her character, what makes her so fascinating, and why she deserves her prince.

I recently watched princess tutu again. Since this was the second time after many year, I didn't ship duck and Mytho. I also went in with great love for all the characters.
Found myself saying, "There isn't anything you can do to make me hate you." To all the characters even when they were doing the most horrible things 😂😂😂 adding, "well other than that, that was despicable of you. But I love you still 🥺🫰✨ "
Cause i know who they were at heart.
But something that stood out to me was Ducks feelings for Mytho's -- there was one moment when her friends were like,
"Why do you like him, hes got no personality to me."
And ducks like, "I just like him, i think hes handsome."
And they go on to say, "There must be something more you like about him."
And Ahiru generally doesn't have an answer because she doesn't know Mythos.
But she knows Fakir, she knows hes kind, she knows he tries hard to look after Mythos, she knows his adpotive dad and zera and his sister, she knows how he'll react to her 'love letter'.
she knows she can trust him with her amulet and her secrets.
Its so slow but its there and its what makes me ship her with Fakir so much.
Plus i love Rue, she is my girl and Mythos is her prince and from day one duck knew she didn't stand a chance because they loved each other. And she was never mad or tried to hurt Rue.
Even when Rue misunderstood tutu intentions and feared Mytho was falling in love with her, Duck was never mad at her. She just wanted to talk about her actions.
Also, i love how duck and Fakir would argue and squabble but there is a moment when they grew close and they're just like,
"Are you mad at me ?" 🥺👉👈
Cause both of them have a moment like this and its just the cutest.
Like duck and fakir from ep 1 could never.
Its like duck is even close with Fakir's family.
I just love duck and Fakir's relationship ❤❤❤

I love the informality of the audio lol, it feels like I’ve sat with someone at school and she’s also into Princess Tutu so now she’s just going off and it’s got me *engrossed*

Thank you for making this video! I agree with so much of what you said about Rue and I hate that Rue's character isn't talked about as much as it should be. Princess Tutu in general isn't talked about as much as it should be!

my favorite "villains" are Akechi Goro from Persona 5 Royal and Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica & the Rebellion movie. i put villains in quotes because Akechi doesn't remain a villain for the entirety of the story, and I don't really see Homura as the "villain" of the story, especially considering how absolutely mischaracterized and misunderstood she is by majority of the Madoka Magica fandom. they both remind me of Rue, in a way; all three of them just want to be loved, especially and specifically by their person of (romantic) affection. they're tragic and beautiful and very well-written
